Pastor’s Letter Dear Friends, I’m sorry I didn’t finish my letter to you last week. I usually get up early on Tuesday Morning to write this letter, but a rat was there to greet me last week. Needless to say, I gave my office over to Mr. Rat until we could set some traps. We did catch one rat, but I suspect there are a few more lurking around. I’m glad I’m back at OLL after 3 weeks of being away at 3 different conferences: Week I, a Pastor’s meeting in Los Gatos; Week II, an International Stewardship Conference in Orlando; Week III, Clergy Study Week in San Francisco. With Father Manuel returning last week from his 3 week vacation, we are now back in full force. This Sunday we remember all our family and friends who have gone before us as we celebrate the feast of All Souls. If you haven’t turned in your All Souls Envelopes, please do so, so that we can put the names of your loved ones on our altar table during the month of November. If you didn’t get my letter and All Souls Envelope in the mail, it means you are not registered here at OLL. Please register so that we can know who you are. Extra All Souls Envelopes can be found by the doors of the Church. I hate to bring this up because a lot of you have been very generous as of late, but I would not be a very good pastor if I didn’t bring this to your attention: I will be speaking at all the Masses next Sunday. It will be one of the shortest homilies you will ever hear. Next Sunday, November 9th, I will be talking about the Annual Appeal. Here are the facts: our 2014 Appeal is $106,000, we have raised $56,000, we still need to raise $50,000, and we have a Savings Account of $400,000. I could write a $50,000 check from our Savings Account which would bring us to $350,000. This would be a dangerously low amount of money for such a big plant as OLL. I will ask you to give what you can. No hard sale, no guilt. I will only do this once and whatever money we don’t get, will come out of our savings. For those people who already gave, thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those people who haven’t given, please consider giving what you can. LOOKING TO THE LAST DAY Today the Church remembers all who have walked the way of Christ and passed from this life. The readings all look to the last day, when we shall all rise from the dead and be reunited. The prophet Daniel announces words of warning and welfare. He cautions us against the judgment to come, but he also comforts us and assures us that all who live a life of virtue and justice will find life eternal. The reading from Romans reminds us that, because of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection and our entrance into that paschal mystery through baptism, we now share in the new life won by Christ. This recognition has repercussions: we need to live righteously now, that we might rise to life forever with Christ on the last day. In the Gospel Jesus pledges that all the Father has given him will not be lost. All the faithful will be raised to joy and live forever in the presence of God.
MIRANDO HACIA EL ÚLTIMO DIA Hoy la Iglesia recuerda a todos los que han caminado el camino de Cristo y han pasado a la otra vida. Las lecturas todas miran al último día, cuando todos resucitaremos de entre los muertos y nos encontraremos de nuevo. El profeta Daniel anuncia palabras de prevención y bienestar. Nos previene sobre el juicio que ha de venir, pero también nos consuela y nos asegura que todo el que vive una vida de virtud y de justicia alcanzará la vida eterna. OLL Seasonal Outreach Ministry for R.E.S.T. Providing Meals for the Winter Homeless Shelter Our Lady of Loretto’s Seasonal Outreach Ministry will again be helping to provide a hot meal on the fourth Tuesday of the month from November through March for the Winter Homeless Shelter headed by the R.E.S.T. (Rotating Emergency Shelter Team) Program. OLL has been a partner in this very worthwhile program for the past three years with other Faith Communities here in Novato to provide, prepare, and serve a warm homemade meal once a month for men at a Church in Novato that will be providing sleeping space. R.E.S.T. is a cooperative program of interfaith congregations, St. Vincent De Paul Society, and Marin Community Foundation that have coordinated a program called REST (Rotating Emergency Shelter Team). This team has strived to provide a warm evening meal, companionship, and overnight shelter to some of Marin County’s homeless citizens during the winter months for the past eight years. If you can help by providing a part of a meal, make a donation toward a meal, and/or would like to volunteer your time to work at one of these dinners please contact:
