Fr. Edwin joins us in August after serving as the Parochial Vicar at the Church of the Incarnation, Charlottesville. He was born in Güicán (state of Boyaca), Colombia, a small town in the mountains near Bogota. He is the fourth of five sons. From his early childhood – young Edwin was an altar server at age 7 – he felt the call to be a priest, and he was encouraged to follow his call by his pastors and the nuns in the Catholic schools he attended. After finishing his eight years of study at the Seminario Mayor in Bucaramango, Fr. Edwin went to Rome for advanced studies at Pontificia Universitas Lateranensis (Theology) and Pontificia Universitas Regina Apostolorum (MA in Bioética). Before coming to the U.S., he taught in the Regional Seminary de Bucaramanga. He enrolled in an English immersion course in Texas and then came across the U.S. to the Diocese of Richmond. His goal is “to accompany people in the Lord’s name to know and grow in faith and love and to become good disciples.” Fr. Edwin is devoted to his call to the priesthood. On July 4th he celebrated his one year anniversary of becoming an American Citizen. We welcome Fr. Edwin Montanez to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish!

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel A Brief History of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel On July 16, 1251, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the Carmelite monk, St. Simon Stock. She revealed to him the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (the Brown Scapular). One hundred and twenty-five years later, the Carmelite order began to celebrate on this date the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In 1609, it was declared the patronal feast of the Carmelite order. The feast then began to spread through southern Italy, Austria, Spain and her colonies, Portugal and her colonies, and to the Papal States. In 1726, Pope Benedict XIII placed the feast on the universal calendar of the Latin Church. According to The Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, “The scapular is an external sign of the filial relationship established between the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother and Queen of Mount Carmel, and the faithful who entrust themselves totally to her protection, who have recourse to her maternal intercession, and who are mindful of the primacy of the spiritual life and the need for prayer.” Fittingly, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel celebrates this motherly devotion that our Lady has to those who show their devotion to her through wearing the Brown Scapular. Our Lady promises that those who wear the Brown Scapular and remain faithfully devoted to her until death will be granted the grace of final perseverance and early deliverance from Purgatory.
