Zeal for your House will consume me.
El celo de tu casa me devora.
Psalm 69 reminds us of Jesus’ burning zeal for the house of his Father. We are not used to seeing Jesus in a rage. We remember that not even when he was severely treated by the Jewish authorities or the Roman soldiers did he offer any resistance. Here, however, people are disrespecting the house of his Father, a truly holy place. When the Jewish authorities ask him for an explanation he makes an allusion to the resurrection. At that time this would have seemed like blasphemy but we read that “his disciples remembered that he had said this and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.” Jesus proclaims here the reality of his death and resurrection. The Church has always reiterated this teaching. Everything about Lent needs to lead us to this moment and the celebration of it. God has sent his Son so that the world can be reconciled to Him. Fr. El Salmo 69 nos recuerda del celo ardiente de Jesús por la casa de su Padre. No estamos acostumbrados a ver al Señor enojado. Recordamos que ni siquiera en el momento más severo de su persecución por los jefes del pueblo y por los romanos, Jesucristo no ofrecía resistencia a sus malhechores. Pero aquí están faltando al respeto a la casa de su Padre – la casa de Dios – que es un lugar santo. Cuando las autoridades le piden una explicación, hace referencia a su propia resurrección. En esa época sembraba blasfemia que Jesús hablara de sí mismo como Templo pero leemos en el evangelio de hoy que “se acordaron sus discípulos de que había dicho aquello y creyeron en la Escritura y en las palabras que Jesús había dicho.” Así proclama la verdad sobre su muerte y resurrección. La Iglesia siempre ha repetido esta enseñanza. Toda nuestra Cuaresma nos tiene que llevar al momento de la celebración del momento al cual Jesús se apunta. Muchas veces toman la forma de cosas que no podemos tocar y son mucho más difíciles de detectar como el orgullo, el poder, el ego, el tiempo, la comodidad o la salud.
How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or health.
