A Message from Father Charles Fink

My dear parish family, As we come to the end of this month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I’d like to share with you part of a beautiful meditation on God’s love and Holy Communion by Jennifer Hubbard. Jennifer lost the younger of her two children in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting several years ago. She writes a regular column in the little monthly missal I so often recommend, Magnificat. What follows is from her June column. In it she is looking back on her experience of a Sunday Mass. Jesus does not reserve his love for the few. He does not suffer only for those who love him. He offers his life to save all humanity because humanity cannot save itself. His pure and unstained heart is pierced. Its blood poured out forms pools at his feet to wash clean our sins. His blood poured out freely to seal, sanctify, and save from weakness. He lays down his life and offers his heart because of his love . . . I approach the altar bowing low . . . Extended to me is a cup filled with the blood from the very heart pierced for my forgiveness—a cup extended to fill the very person for whom it was emptied. Through the outstretched hands, I am offered his heart. I quietly offer mine as I extend my open hands to accept his. What a blessing and source of strength to have such an appreciation of who Jesus is, how much he loves us, and what it is we are receiving when we receive Holy Communion. How nonchalantly so many Catholics receive; how blithely so many others excuse themselves from thus drawing near to Christ. If you don’t already subscribe to Magnificat, perhaps Jennifer Hubbard’s words will entice you to do so. A year-long subscription is $44.95 (or $64.95 for the large print edition). You may order online at www.magnificat.com; or mail a check to: Magnificat, PO Box 822, Yonkers, NY 10702; or call 1-866-273-5215. May the Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament be praised, adored, and loved with grateful affection at every moment in all the tabernacles of the world even to the end of time. Amen. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT 3. GOD AND THE MORAL ORDER The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple (Psalm 19:7). During the Vietnam War, a group of European intellectuals, led by Jean Paul Sartre and Bertrand Russell, authored a protest against US involvement in what they considered a crime against humanity. As there were many protests against the war, this one probably struck few people as extraordinary. Indeed, in a sea of protests, it made hardly a ripple at all, but it should have, not, however, for the reasons one might suppose. Sartre and Russell were both professional philosophers who had spent their entire careers fostering the view that there is no God and that, therefore, there is no objective morality. Now, all of a sudden, these two intellectual giants and others of their ilk were informing the world that the United States was immoral for participating in the Vietnam War. Did they mean only that the war irritated their peculiar sensibilities? They apparently hoped to be taken more seriously than that. You see, Messieurs Sartre and Russell had left their ivory towers and run smack into the real world of morality and right and wrong. They might disagree with us or among themselves about what is right and wrong, but the point is that they recognized, at least momentarily, that not all things are relative. This is only true, however, because there is an Absolute, the Author of right and wrong, the Law-giver, God Almighty. No God: no objective morality. No God: might makes right, which is to say, whoever has the biggest guns, the biggest mouths, the most people on their side. But who believes in no objective morality, or that Gandhi is bad and Hitler good, that might makes right? Nobody except the insane and people like Sartre and Russell, so long as they are insulated from reality by academia. Interestingly, Sartre, the life-long atheist, admitted on his deathbed that he no longer believed his life was meaningless and without purpose, rather that he had been part of a plan. And Russell, late in life, publicly, and with some embarrassment, stated his conviction that the only hope for humanity was Christian love. Neither was joining any church, mind you, but they sure had come a long way. Better late than never, it’s true, but even better would have been sooner than later.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY “Actions speak louder than words” Now and at the Hour of Our Death

A Catholic guide to End-of-Life Decision-Making A Final Word on Church Teaching The provision of food, water, cleanliness and warmth are elements of ordinary care that we owe to our brothers and sisters in Christ as we respond to the gospel call to care for “the least among us.” They are morally required for each patient. Treatment decisions are moral decisions, and must be made with informed consent. Each of us has free will and the ability to reason and we must use these gifts as we make important medical decisions. As Christians, we have the moral obligation to make decisions which are good for us and are according to God’s will. Next week. Planning in Advance– Legal options in New York State
