November 30, 2014 Celebrating the Season of Advent

Exploring Your Spiritual Direction I OFTEN THINK OF THE PROPHET ISAIAH as one of Scripture’s greatest explorers. With God’s help he sees a future that not everyone is quite as sure of as he seems to be. He sees abilities and possibilities in people that often they don’t see in themselves or each other. And, he has an enviable conquering attitude toward most obstacles and seeming impossibilities in the way of the People of God. He has a sense of direction that is positive and full of hope. I want more of what Isaiah seems to have! Exploring—like climbing a mountain—can be an arduous task. It can leave you breathless. And I’ve learned that one of the most important parts of climbing mountains—going up and coming down—is having a base camp. Some have even told me that being at base camp is one of the hardest parts of climbing. Why? Because the only thing you do is wait! It’s where you get your body, mind, heart, and soul ready for more climbing or for coming home. The Season of Advent is the beginning of what is sometimes called the “year of grace” — the time during which we continue our spiritual journey higher or deeper into the mystery of God in our life. We’re called to explore—again and again— how we are to be the flesh and blood instruments of God’s grace in our world. This journey’s wonder and the challenges of such a climb has and will again leave us breathless.

Putting Yourself into the Hands of God Again Most Catholics need to rediscover the value of this Sacrament in their lives. Most want to and tell me that it’s been way too long in coming. Most find that it’s easier to do than they thought. If you think you’re ready to rediscover this sacrament in your life, here’s three simple questions that I often use with others to help them prepare: ► What have I done wrong that I’m sorry for? ► What do I need God’s help with in my life? ► What am I most thankful for today as a “grace” in my life”

I encourage all of our parish members to make this Advent a kind of “base camp experience”. Rest. Think about what lies ahead and let God prepare you. Pray to remember how faith has already changed your life and the world around you. With Isaiah imagine all that is yet to come! During this season you may also want to take advantage of the Sacrament of Penance. This Sacrament is about conversation and conversation is a part of every exploration. You need it to get ready for something hard or challenging. It’s a must when you’re in trouble or stuck in a difficult place. And, can you imagine not telling someone about your success or the beautiful, awesome experience of being brave or doing something hard!

T h e L i g h t I s O N F o r Yo u Celebrating the Sacrament of Penance Additional Times for Confession The Sacrament of Penance Thursday, December 4th, 4:00—5:00pm is always available on Saturday afternoons: Tuesday, December 9th, 7:00pm At Holy Name of Jesus Parish 2:30—3:30pm Or, you may want to make an appointment with Father Mike for a time convenient for you.

GIVING THE PRESENT OF PRESENCE As we prepare for Christmas, here are some ways that our hearts will be made ready. • Be with someone who needs you. • Be with a person who gives you hope. • Be with an older person • Be with one who is in pain. • Be with yourself. • Be with a child. • Be with an enemy or someone you dislike. • Be with someone who has terminal illness. • Be with the homeless. • Be with those whose hope is faint. • Be with world leaders. • Be with someone in your family. • Be with those who are abused and neglected. • Be with your loved ones. • Joyce Rupp The best way to “be with” all of these children of God, is through our prayers and our mindfulness of them. A Blessed Advent to you. S. Rose, SSND.RN

Are you tired of clutter in your house? We all have it...things we thought we wanted but we don’t, or things someone gave us but we don’t really need. Some of these things are still in the box or have been used just once and are in great condition so we don’t want to throw them out! Well, here is a way to put those things to use...guilt free! Our youth group will be collecting usable, new or nearly new items like mugs, decorations, jewelry, puzzles, Christmas stuff, etc. to sell in our Santa store so we can send our youth to the Pro Life trip.
