33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

PASTOR’S CORNER THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST On Sunday October 30, nineteen people from Holy Name Parish and four from St. Mary Parish completed the diocesan and parish training to be Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. With the addition of a number of new ministers we will begin offering the Eucharist under the form of both bread and wine at Holy Name Parish on all Sundays, Holy Days, and Solemnities. St. Mary Parish currently has Communion available under both species (forms). When we receive the Eucharist, whether it be the consecrated host or the precious blood, we always receive the complete body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. Thus, there is never a requirement that a person has to receive Communion under both kinds. However, since the renewal of the liturgy after Vatican Council II, the option has existed for the faithful to receive our Lord under both species, bread and wine, on some occasions. The main reason our Church fathers of Vatican Council II have encouraged this practice is because it was the desire of Church fathers of the Council of Trent that receiving Communion under both kinds is a clearer form of the sacramental sign and it offers a particular opportunity of deepening the understanding of the mystery in which the faithful take part. From the first days of the Church’s celebration of the Eucharist, Holy Communion consisted of the reception of both species in fulfillment of the Lord’s command to “take and eat…take and drink.” The distribution of Communion to the faithful under both kinds was the norm for more than a thousand years of Catholic liturgical practice. In the late eleventh century the custom of distributing the Eucharist to the faithful under the form of bread alone began to grow. By the twelfth century theologians began speaking of Communion under one kind as a “custom” of the Church. In 1963, the Fathers of Vatican Council II authorized the extension of the faculty for Holy Communion under both kinds. The liturgy document, Sacrosanctum Concilium, made it possible at the bishop’s discretion to allow Communion under both kinds. In the third typical edition of the Roman Missal, it states: “Holy Communion has a more complete form as a sign when it is received under the both kinds. For in this manner of reception, a fuller sign of the Eucharistic banquet shines forth.” The General Instruction of the Roman Missal further states: “at the same time, the faithful should be guided toward a desire to take part more intensely in a sacred rite in which the sign of the Eucharistic meal stands our more explicitly.” Thus, the extension of the permission for the distribution of Holy Communion under both kinds does not represent a change in the Church’s immemorial beliefs concerning the Holy Eucharist. With the passing of time and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the reform of Vatican Council II has resulted in the restoration of a practice by which the faithful are again able to experience “a fuller sign of the Eucharistic banquet.” Next week, I will discuss the manner in which Holy Communion will be distributed under both species in the parish and the necessary steps that were taken to be able to offer Communion under both species.

“Stewarding our Gifts: Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life" November 13, 2016 The prophet Malachi warned the evildoers in Israel’s time that the day of the Lord would come unexpectedly and punish them for their deeds while the righteous would be rewarded. In Jesus’ time he spoke of the destruction of the temple and those around him wanted to receive a warning. Like Jesus’ disciples, we long to know ahead of time that the end is near. Jesus warned his disciples to not be deceived by false prophets and to always be prepared. Our preparation is rooted in how we live each day with the abundance of God’s creation. May our concern for each other’s journey to heaven influence us to live in the here and now, placing our gifts at the service of the Lord. RESPECT LIFE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE

There will be a meeting held on November 15th at 6:00 P.M. in the Parish Hall. A Christmas project will be the main discussion. If you haven’t been to a meeting yet, please consider coming! Everyone is invited.

THANKSGIVING DAY MASS – REMINDER Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be at 9:00 A.M. This will be a special Mass in which all are invited to participate by bringing the bread that will be served at their family meals for a special blessing. Come a little early so that you can place your bread on the table in the sanctuary before Mass. While we spend this day being thankful for what we have, we should also remember those less fortunate. We are also invited to bring, if you are able, non-perishable items or canned food to church. Those items will be delivered to the Winfield Food Pantry. If you won’t be here for this Mass, please feel free to bring anything you’d like to donate beforehand.

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time National March for Life 2017 Registration deadline is November 15th Dates: January 24 – 29, 2017 Cost: $375.00 per person Perhaps more than ever we need to have a large witness to a greater respect for the unborn and all human life. We are invited to join Bishop Kemme and other youth from around the Wichita Diocese to make the annual pilgrimage to Washington, DC. This is an opportunity to be a voice for the voiceless. Please consider getting involved in this important witness to life! Young members of our parish have made this trip in the past. This year, let’s strive to send as many youth as we can. For more information and to download registration forms visit, http://catholicdioceseofwichita.org/rlsj

Confirmation – Sacrament of the Holy Spirit In the sacrament of Confirmation the grace of Baptism is completed by a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which seal or “confirm” the baptized in union with Christ and equip them for active participation in the worship and apostolic life of the Church. As one reflects on what the sacrament of Confirmation is, it is easy to understand why it is so important for Catholics to complete the sacraments of initiation and be confirmed. In the Diocese of Wichita the normal age for Confirmation is sophomore year of high school. At the present time we have sixteen young people who are freshmen and sophomores who have been preparing for more than a year to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit from the hands of Bishop Carl Kemme on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Please pray for our young people as they prepare to receive this most important sacrament. I hope many parishioners will join with the confirmandi, their sponsors, their parents, and their family for this special sacramental moment in the life of our parish and the Church. At the present time there is one adult who is preparing to be confirmed with our youth. Originally her Confirmation class was being held in conjunction with the RCIA class. Since then our RCIA candidate has discontinued coming. This made me think that there are probably a number of other adults who for one reason or another have not been confirmed. I would like to invite you to join us so you can be fully initiated in the Catholic Church. The class for adult Confirmation is being held on Tuesday, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the 5/6 grade classroom. Our next class is this coming Tuesday, November15. Receiving the sacrament of Confirmation is especially important for those who are planning the sacrament of Matrimony in the near future. We have only had one class and that will be easy to make up, but please don’t delay. Call me at 221-3610 to sign up and I will get materials ordered for you. In a prayer entitled, “Growing in the Spirit,” one of the lines states: “We need you, God the Holy Spirit, to make our faith complete.” If you have not been confirmed I encourage you not to continue living your life without a complete faith. God, the Holy Spirit wishes to pour his gifts upon you. Don’t pass up the opportunity.
