LIVING OUR FAITH From the Desk of Fr. Thomas Pastorius, 1. Faith and Family Programs: Our Faith and Family Programming will be returning Tuesday September 6 th at 6:30 pm. In the meantime this week’s Faith and Family suggested activity is for families to take time to perform a service project together. It does not have to be complicated. It could be as simple as making cards for soldiers or visiting someone you know to be lonely. 2. Do you know anyone who is thinking about being Catholic? “What you are is God's gift to you, what you become is your gift to God.” Hans Urs von Balthasar. Invite someone to become the best person they can be by asking them if they are interested in becoming Catholic. Our new RCIA session will be beginning in September so have them contact the Rectory as soon as possible. 3. Weekly Shout Out!!! We at Epiphany of Our Lord parish are blest to have our parish deeply rooted in our neighborhood. We are blest, therefore, also to be a part of Lindenwood Area Senior Ministries (LASM). This ministry is important to our parish because it helps the seniors of our area grow in their faith and to receive the help they need to stay in their homes. If you are over the age of 50 please consider participating in there many events. If you are under the age of 50 consider volunteering for one of their events. 4. Homecoming Raffle Tickets Do you enjoy the air conditioned Church? If so, I ask you to please realize that we will soon need to replace one of the two AC unites on the Church. Two years ago we were able to replace one of the two AC units on the Church because we sold out of Homecoming Raffle Tickets. It looks like we now need to replace the older AC unit sooner rather than later. Please keep this in mind as you think about buying a homecoming (or partial) raffle ticket. If you would like to buy a raffle ticket please contact the parish office or visit us online at wwwepiphanystl.org to make your online purchase. 5. Some Things To Think about when planning a funeral I want to take a moment and remind people about the purpose of a Catholic Wake. The wake is an opportunity for those who have known the deceased (or the family of the deceased) to come and show how much that person meant to them, especially if they cannot make it to the funeral. It is almost selfdefeating to have a wake the day of the funeral because a person who cannot attend a 10 am funeral Mass because of an obligation probably will not be able to attend a 9 am wake. Funeral homes also have a better set up for a wake than most churches because they have more bathrooms and a lounge. Finally, just an FYI, there are no spiritual benefits to hosting ones wake in a Church. God bless, Fr. Tom

Stewardship

“…I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God.” Colossians 1:25 Believe it or not, we are all called to evangelize – to continuously grow in our knowledge and relationship with Jesus and to share it with others. We may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look for opportunities to share our Faith with those closest to us, like our family and friends.

New Altar Servers Needed

We need more altar servers to assist with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. If you are between 5th and 12th grade and would like to join the altar servers, please let Deacon Michael know and we will schedule a time to learn how. We are especially looking for servers who are entering the 5th grade to join.

LIVING OUR FAITH Spiritual Ponderings

Faith & Film: Minion Movie

One of the great Catholic writers of our time was G.K. Chesterton. He was a contemporary and friends with C.S. Lewis who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia. I am particularly fond of this quote from G.K. Chesterton regarding the power that stories (and thus movies) have on our lives. “Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.” For the third of our five movies, I want to reflect on the Minion Movie. Most of my family and some of my friends know that I am a fan of the little yellow minions. There is something about them that makes me laugh. (I have a minion piggy bank, fleece blanket, tooth brush holder, and much more). In an effort to be completely honest, I did not find the Minion Movie to be all that great. There was too much cheap/crude humor in the movie that really missed its mark. There were times when I wondered if I would have been able to understand any of the movie if I was a kid in the second grade. With that being said, I of course was able to walk away with some spiritual insights from the movie. The narrator in the beginning of the movie explains that the Minions evolved into being with one purpose in mind. They wanted to serve the most evil being around and so they first serve a T-Rex, and then Dracula, and then Napoleon. All the people that they serve meet disastrous ends because of the minions ineptitude. After Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo the minions hide in a deserted cave where they build a civilization that provides them with everything they could ever want but in the end they are not happy because they have no boss to serve. The first spiritual insight from the movie is simply that life would not be worth living without a purpose and meeting are physical needs is not that purpose. We are called to become greater than we are through service to master. In our case, our master is God and this is Good News because our creator wants what is best for us, unlike any of the masters the minions served before Gru. One minion named Kevin decides that he is going to leave the cave and search for a new master for the minions to serve. He is joined by Stuart (who was accidently volunteered because he was not paying attention) and Bob (who was at first rejected because he was too small and only accepted because no one else volunteered. Watching the three minions travel, I kept hearing our multi-parish youth minister saying over and over again “The Catholic life was never meant to be lived alone.” I am grateful each time she reminds me and the teens of this fact. The next spiritual insight comes from the fact that they discover that there is literally a bad guy convention taking place in Orlando, Florida while they are in New York City. The three minions begin to ask for directions to Orlando, FL. The problem is that they ask all the wrong people. They ask a baby who cannot talk, a dog that can only bark and a few other inanimate objects. Sadly, there are people in life who keep looking for a direction to travel but they always seem to ask the wrong person. Without good directions, finding our way can be very hard. This is why the Church is so important. She can point us always in the right directions in regards to faith and morals. The three brave minions eventually hook up with Scarlet Overkill and she tests their loyalty by having them steal the Royal Crown off of Queen Elizabeth’s head – pretty big test. Through a strange series of events though Kevin, Bob, and Stuart do not only get the crown, but also Bob becomes King of England. Pretty much all of this happens by accident, but Scarlet sees it as a betrayal despite the fact that the minions try to give her the crown when they see her again. Sadly, most of the time people hurt us they do so accidently or out of neglect and not out of malice. Scarlet cannot see this and, therefore, she holds a grudge which ultimately leads to her demise. Scarlet learns the hard way that holding a grudge is like drinking a poison yourself and hoping the other person dies. In the end, I am not sure what to make out of the Minion movie. I definitely liked Despicable Me and Despicable ME II better.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary:``````````````108 Gospel LK 10:38-42 Spiritual Reflection: The most important thing we can do is to listen to others. Trying to impress them or help them means nothing unless we are able to show them that we care enough to listen. Spiritual Question 1. Why was Martha worried about the serving? 2. Who is the only person we can control in life? 3. How can we better listen to others? 4. How can we better listen to Jesus? 5. How do you think dinner went that night?

Vision Divina:

Join us at Sanguis Christi Spirituallity Center, 3522 Utah Street, St. Louis, MO on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm and pray Visio Divina. While Lectio Divina is a method of praying with scripture, Visio Divina (Latin for "divine seeing") is a method for praying with images or other media. While the Orthodox tradition has long practiced praying with images through icons, the western Church is less comfortable with this type of prayer. Visio Divina invites us to see at a more contemplative pace. Join us as we explore this form of prayer and be surprised by a God who is never limited or tied to any image but speaks through them. Facilitators are Sr. Carol Orf and Sr. Ginny Jaskiewicz. For more information or to register, call Sr. Carol Orf at 314-560-1028.

Guide Book & Directory Advertising

We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the Church. The book contains the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and how of our Church. The book is provided at no cost to our Church, including the mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local businesses that advertise in it. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out how to advertise in our book, please call the Parish Office. Recent survey results by Guide book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize our Gide Book & Directory advertisers over nonadvertisers. It “does pay” go advertise in our Guide Book & Directory. Directory Update Does the church database have YOUR family membership record correct? Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory. It is time for us to update our database with any changes, addictions or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed you phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the church office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. The parish office number is 314-781 -1199.

A Caring Tip from LASM’s Stephen Ministry

When a friend is struggling with grief, an illness, or some other problem, the following are good ways to show that you care: You can acknowledge that the other person is in a tight spot by asking “You doing okay?” Your body language can show you are willing to listen, stop and look the person in the eye, rather than just extending a greeting and continuing down the hall or sidewalk. Next Sunday, July 17th Lindenwood Area Senior Ministry is hosting A Taste of Stephen Ministry. Lunch will be provided as we give an overview of Stephen Ministry and our upcoming Stephen Minister training class set to begin on September 11th. Please join us next Sunday! We will meet at 12:30 pm in the Multipurpose Room of Timothy Lutheran Church (6704 Fyler). Questions and reservations: LASM Office, 314-647-4591.
