Upcoming Events Feed My Starving Children, Day of Service

Help turn hunger into hope with your own two hands by packing nutritious meals for starving children around the world. This day trip to the local non-profit, Feed My Starving Children, in Chanhassen, is scheduled over the fall MEA school break, making it a great opportunity to volunteer with your grandchild or other youngster. You will hand-pack meals specially formulated for malnourished children. FMSC sends them to partners around the world where they're used to operate orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs to break the cycle of poverty. You don’t need to bring anything, as all food and materials are provided, but be prepared to stand for most of the 2-hour volunteer shift. Each adult may bring one child in grades K-2 or up to 2 children in grade 3 or above if you wish, or simply register on your own or with other adults. Your service will be very much appreciated. Sponsored by P.S.Realty Group/EXIT Realty Metro, Penni Christianson and Sharon Elkerton. SRL889 Fri., Oct. 21 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Lenox Lounge Free

Beginning and Almost Beginning Crochet

Whether you are an absolute beginner or someone who learned to crochet once-upona-time and has forgotten how, this class is for you! We start at the beginning, looking and tools and materials and learning to make chain, slip stitch, single crochet and double crochet stitches, read patterns and follow diagrams. You will complete a dishcloth, scarf and granny squares. Supplies: We will be using the instruction book Stitch and Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller, Workman publishing company. List price is $15.99 in paperback, but some stores discount it and it is also available in a cheaper electronic version for e-readers. According to my research, the printed version of the book is available at local bookstores, through online booksellers and some craft and yarn shops. I hope you will invest in this book because it has very clear and helpful instructions and a number of interesting patterns and will provide an ongoing reference that will answer most of your questions as you learn to crochet. Please be sure to bring the following items to our first meeting: Crochet hooks in sizes H, J, K, and L, one ball of size 4 cotton yarn, knitting markers or safety pins. You will need to purchase additional yarn and hooks for projects as the class progresses, but we will discuss that in class. Stores frequently sell kits with a range of crochet hook sizes, which may save you a bit on the cost of the individual hooks. If you find such a kit that covers the size range from H through K (possibly with additional sizes thrown in), it may be a good investment. Here's what participants had to say: “She is great!” “So patient and easy to learn from.” “Love her class!” “Judy is an excellent instructor whose casual style and the ability to meet students at their own level is awesome.” Instructor: Judy Goebel is a graduate of Macalester College with a BA in Fine Art. She has worked as a fiber artist and instructor, teaching technical and arts classes. She has taught through Richfield/Bloomington Community Education, Weavers’ Guild of Minnesota, North Country Fiber Fair (Watertown, South Dakota) and Buttermilk Farm Folk School. Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940

The morning of 11 November 1940 brought with it unseasonably high temperatures. By early afternoon temperatures had warmed into the lower to middle 60s °F over most of the affected region. However, as the day wore on conditions quickly deteriorated. Temperatures dropped sharply, winds picked up, and rain, followed by sleet, and then snow began to fall. An intense low-pressure system had tracked from the southern plains northeastward into Minnesota. The result was a raging blizzard that would last into the next day. Snowfalls of up to 27 inches, winds of 50 to 80 mph, 20-foot snow drifts. The Armistice Day Blizzard ranks #2 in Minnesota's list of top-5 weather events of the 20th century. Lenox Foundation Letter From The President

Lenox Foundation Board 2015 – 2016 Sherrill Mozey, President Tom Schmitz, Vice President Judy Cook, Secretary Barbara Person, Treasurer Shirley Carlson Birdie Elkofska Rich Erickson MaryKay Harrington Carol Kohler Gregg Lindberg Betty Pickle

The check is presented to Linda Ashe, Adult Services Manager.Lenox Board members from left to right: Birdie Elkofska, Mary Kay Harrington, Carol Kohler, Linda Asche, Sherrill Mozey, Judy Cook, Shirley Carlson, Barbara Person, and Rich Erickson,

We hope many of you attended the June 8th Party in the Park where not only the June, July, and August birthdays were celebrated but also the Lenox Foundation’s 30th Anniversary — 1986 – 2016! Did you know that: • Between 1986 – 1988 the Founders’ Club raised over $19,000 to start the Lenox Foundation? There were 341 donors/21 businesses who initially donated. • Mayor Lyle Hanks proclaimed 1988 as the Year of the Lenox Foundation? • The Lenox Foundation is the only SLP community foundation (SLP Community Foundation and SLP Public Schools Foundation the other two).that has its own 501(c)3 tax exempt status? • In 2001-02, $16,785 was given to help set up the computer lab? • There have been over 64 Board members and 6 Board presidents in the last 30 years? • Over $206,980 have been given to the Senior Program since 1986?! This is all the interest from our invested funds. A PowerPoint presentation on the Foundation has been created to explain its past, present and future. The Board hopes to speak at community groups in SLP to bring about awareness. If your group is interested, please contact me through the Lenox office. At the May 2016 Board meeting a check was presented to the Senior Program for $12,567, our interest from the Minnesota Philanthropy Partners, the financial manager of our funds.

We are so proud of our Foundation and its support of the St. Louis Park Senior Program for the past 30 years. I want to especially thank all the past and present Board members for their dedication and promotion of our mission. The Board thanks all of you who have donated to the Lenox Foundation. If you have any questions about the Lenox Foundation or are interested in becoming a member, please contact one of members or Linda Ashe. Sherrill Mozey President, Lenox Foundation

If you find a substitute or an individual on the wait list takes your place, a refund will be made.
