President’s Report for 2012/13 I’d like to commence this report with a tribute to Sally. Sally actually introduced me to Rotary in Blackall in 2000. I’m reminded that a year ago Sally was here supporting me in my decision to take on this role as President and even at her death she said how proud she was of my work for Rotary and encouraged me to continue. Without this encouragement, I could quite easily have given up but I’m so pleased that I did continue, as the support I have been given through my fellow members has been unmeasurable, thank you all. Thank you to our board for this year, especially those in major supporting roles for the President, of John Palmer as Secretary and David Froyland as Treasurer. I would also single out Eddie Woodwell for the job he has done in producing a top grade bulletin on time every week. To the rest of the board, thanks for all the projects which have been undertaken which are documented in this report. Thanks to Vic Mason and Frank Hurley for all the work that goes into making sure we have an interesting guest speaker at every meeting. This is a job often taken for granted. There are so many people who continually contribute to the working of our Club I thank you all. My first challenge for the year was to rewrite the Constitution and By-Laws. Thanks to the support of members this was achieved in September. Although it seemed like a big job at the time, it now seems small in the context of everything else we have achieved this year. In September David Dunkley, Eddie Woodwell, Ross Comben and myself, joined with members of North Mackay on a RAWCS work party to the Solomon Islands for two weeks. This was a very satisfying and rewarding experience aimed mainly at improving education facilities in the Munda area. I recommend that any other members who are interested in international projects join a RAWCS project. In October we again conducted a very successful Christmas Fair. Thanks must be extended to the great contribution made to the fair by our ladies who plan their stalls months in advance. An inspection of our food van by a council inspector highlighted several deficiencies which needed to be addressed. After some discussion we decided to renovate the van and the club is hugely indebted to Ian Ritchie for the way he has planned and executed this. Ian has given much of his time and tapped into work connections to get the job done at the right price. I’m sure our food service will be greatly improved at this year’s fair. Congratulations to Michael Curtin as incoming President. I know that our members will be as supportive to you as they have been to me.

Club Service Director, Club Service, Michael Curtin 2013 has come and gone and no doubt we will be saying the same thing this time next year. This year we again continued on with past successful Club Service projects and activities from previous years. Early July, District Governor Ken Kelly and wife, Joyce made their official visit to our Club setting out District goals for the year ahead. In August we had a “Guess who’s coming to dinner” social evening. By all accounts quite a relaxing and socially enjoyable evening was had by all diners. Should the event be held again in future years I strongly recommend participation as it is a fun way to meet socially and get to know other members and their partners. A special thank you to Eric and Sina Barry who organised the evening, and also the hosts who shared their homes and catered for their guests. In October we had our traditional (biggest fund raiser) signature Christmas fair. Thanks to all members and their partners and other helpers for their efforts in making the annual fair another success. During the year the caravan has been revamped under the stewardship of Ian Ritchie, which no doubt will significantly increase the van’s efficiency and effectiveness not to mention prestige. A big thank you Ian for your drive and engineering prowess. Once again the Surf Life Saving Club was chosen for our Christmas party. This year Geoff and Violet Walsh provided entertainment, we also had a clown for the kids and of course Santa. This year it was our Club’s turn to host both North Mackay Club for bowls and Sarina & Walkerston Clubs for darts. Bowls was in March, the venue being Suburban Bowls Club. The darts night was at the Mackay Darts Association, Shinn Street in April. Both venues were good to deal with in organising the respective events and the catering was exceptional. End results, Bowls we won, 51 to 18 and Darts, unfortunately we had a loss. Also in March, Secretary Elect Mark Gayton and myself attended PEPS (Presidents Elect Planning Seminar) previously PETS (Presidents Elect Training Seminar). Both Mark and I enjoyed the fellowship of other Rotarians at the seminar. Both of us feel as though we learnt a lot more about Rotary, but as with learning, the more we learn and know, the more we realise there is a lot more that we don’t know. District Conference was in May and held in Mackay. Our Club was given the opportunity to cater and cook for the opening/welcome evening of the conference. I do believe we proved our worth and overall it panned out quite a good night. A number of our members also attended the conference over the weekend including the Governor’s Dinner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my committee members for their support and assistance as well as all club members and partners over the past year. Because of this support and assistance I am more comfortable in moving into the position of President. I also thank all those who have accepted positions of responsibility for our next year.

Community Service Matt Edwards, Community Service Director Opti-MINDS

(UNASHAMEDLY EXCELLENT)

The year opened with a bang as the Club supplied judges for the local Opti-MINDS Challenge competition. Several members sat on panels watching some of the best young minds in the district put their minds and ingenuity toward sustainable solutions’ problems, which they were set in the Science and Engineering division.

Christmas Fair Once again the Christmas Fair was an outstanding success. All members rolled up their sleeves and put in hours of hard work for what is by far the clubs biggest money raiser.

Blood drive This year the club was registered with the Red Cross' Red Club program. Now any member who donates can have their donation count towards a Club total. Our Club total also contributes towards Rotary Australia's donation levels on the Red Club database.

Backyard Blitz When Headspace opened a new office in Mackay, West Mackay Rotary members were on hand to provide a thorough clean up in the alley which ran down to its entrance. The corridor was frequented by the homeless and late night party goers and was quite a mess, but it looked 100% better once the job was done. Some members also ran a BBQ breakfast for the opening morning.

Free Computers for the Disadvantaged Inc. Eddie Woodwell looks after this project, without assistance or recognition, in the name of our Club which makes us all look good. “Free Computers for the Disadvantaged Inc. wish to thank West Mackay Rotary for their donations of computer systems, your generosity is most appreciated!” ----- Many thanks Eddie.

Marina Run A huge turnout of members put their hand up to assist the local committee of the 2013 BMA Marina Run. Jobs included marshalling and drink station coordination as well as selling bacon and egg burgers from the canteen beneath the Surf Club. It was an early start, but a worthy cause.

Show Gates At the time this report was compiled, our Show Gates commitment had not been fulfilled. It is an important project, not only raising funds, but also contributing to a necessary community activity. I am confident that our effort will help ensure the success of the 2013 Mackay Show.

Vocational Service Vocational Service Director, Trevor Townsend IAN RITCHIE & CO. The club had three vocational visits for the year. Our first visit was to Ian Ritchie’s Engineering work shop where we inspected a tractor being modified into a high clearance tractor, Ian provided us with a very detailed account of the processes involved. It was very interesting to inspect the completed tractor and view the detail and professional product coming from a small Engineering Workshop. Ian’s business is based in structural and general engineering construction. Extremely high clearance tractors are Ian’s specialty.

CENTRAL QUEENSLAND CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC Our second visit was to the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, where Judith Brown entertained us with an enjoyable recital followed by an introduction to and an inspection of the Australian made Stuart Concert Grand Piano. We also inspected the incomplete Conservatorium’s new building complex and were informed of their plans and ambitions for the future.

Iona WEST MEN’S SHED We also held a meeting at the Mackay Men’s Shed, a cause close to our Club’s heart. It was pleasing to hear from volunteers who attend the shed and the changes The Shed has made to their personal situations, the committee in appreciation of our support provided dinner. On a personal note I would like to thank Syd for his help in organizing the Men’s shed visit.

Vocational Meeting Programs Club members have informed us at regular meetings about some of the finer points of their vocation, Greg Sandral explained some intimate points concerning the marketing of grain. Neil Wallace informed us of how even the disasters in the United States have a detrimental effect on our Insurance Policies. Noel Fordyce explained how Solar Panels work and also explained the differences between different types of panels. Mark Gayton’s talk “Aspects of the Sugar Industry” told an up to date story of current operations and gave an insight into the Industry’s possible future. I would like to extend my thanks to fellow members for their assistance during the year.

International Service Ian Ritchie, International Service Director. Burn Ashburner, International Service Director transferred to Brisbane in the early part of this year and I have taken over for the last few months.
The GSE team in-bound from Brazil gave a presentation at the welcome bar-be-cue at the Rotary Conference in Mackay in May. The out-bound team also gave their presentation at the Conference. In Sept 2012, 4 Mackay West Rotarians (Geoff Morgan, David Dunkley, Eddie Woodwell and Ross Comben) volunteered for a “tour of duty” in the Western Province, Solomon Islands. Our group assisted in an ongoing RAWCS programme for district 9570, with a group sponsored by North Mackay Rotary. The complete team totaled fourteen, not all were Rotarians. The team assisted in the distribution of two shipping containers of materials for local schools, the local hospital and the community. Geoff Morgan used his specialist skill set to assist in the Manual Arts areas of the local schools as well as renovations to enable a Library to be set up at Beroko Village. David Dunkley assisted in the Dentistry clinic at the local hospital, and also accompanied a team to distribute goods to Seghe Hospital. Eddie Woodwell used his extensive Computer expertise to set up, repair and get up and running every computer in the immediate District. He also tutored teachers in the use and repair of same. Ross Comben gathered information to assist and develop a new Rotary Programme called Learn/Grow, whereby advice and materials are used to educate and assist local people to be more selfsustaining in the food-plants they are choosing to grow. All team members had a wonderful experience and contributed greatly to the ongoing success of this RAWCS project. In January 2013 Cathy Booth team leader, Leonie Hills, Leanne Petersen, Adele Hughes, Trish Gilluley, Austin Grillmeier, Katie Truelson and Ian Ritchie. Volunteered for a RAWCS project to look at building a new orphanage in Ukunda in south east Kenya. The group visited two established orphanages to give us an insight into how we should begin. There is a definite need for another orphanage, but a more essential need for schools. We also volunteered at a feeding station to help feed 2,000 children on a Sunday. Over five days the team fitted guttering and downpipes to a rainwater tank to the caretakers’ cottage that has already been built on Umoja land. In September the second team in consisting of fifteen Rotary members will start construction of the security fence around Umoja Orphanage land. Subsequent teams will work on accommodation and the school as money becomes available. In the three week tour of Kenya the team had a five day wild life safari tour of three parks. At the end of the tour I spent five days in South Africa catching up with Debbie Klintworth who was with our club twenty five years ago as Rotary Exchange Student. I had experience of a lifetime and hope to return next year.

New Generations Director, Marty Eiteneuer RYDA, Road Safety Education Program: The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program was held at the PCYC at North Mackay on Tuesday 24 and 25th of July 2012 where 233 year 11 students from 5 regional high schools took part in the annual road safety program. A large increase from last year. Club members participated as Team Leaders and assisted with running this year’s event, Syd Cowan is the Mackay Area Chairman for this program which has been renamed from RYDA to the now RYDA Road Safety Education Program. Len Hansen bursary: Camryn Sutton was selected as the winner of the $500 Len Hansen Bursary at the Victoria Park School’s 2012 Presentation Night. She was presented with a framed award, a medallion and the perpetual trophy. The bursary helps pay for Camryn’s school educational costs at Mercy College in 2013. This award is a very much highly sort after award for the year seven students and there is a big lead up the announcement on the night. The Agricultural Skills and Technology Experience: The Agricultural Skills and Technology Experience offer students in grades 10,11and12 the opportunity to spend 4 days at either the Emerald or Longreach Agricultural colleges during their school holidays. Where they learn skills in animal husbandry, horticulture, conservation and land management and how to operate machinery. They also learn the skills required to own or manage a property one day. This year we sponsored Eleanor Fordyce, Eleanor attended the Longreach experience. There were 6 local students selected to attend this experience, they were from Mirani State High 1, Pioneer state high 1, Mackay Christian College 2 and Mackay State High School 1 and our Eleanor from Mercy College 1. The Clubs of District 9570 sponsored 40 students into the programme. National Youth Science Forum; Bradley Roper was sponsored by our Club and was one of six students selected from 16 applicants to attend the National Youth Science Forum from the Mackay district. Again another tough selection process to go through due to the high quality of applicants. Samantha Cridland one off this year’s applicants will be going back again next year as a staff person to help the 2014 applicants through the NSYF experience. She will be a great ambassador for Rotary and NYSF and the Mackay district. Again we have 16 applicants for the selections for 2014. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards; Heather Davies and Robert Nicolai have been accepted into the RYLA program and were sent away on The RYLA camp on March 9th-15th 2013. There were 16 young people attending. This is a great week long program based on personal development. Heather and Robert are both apprentices at Mackay Sugar where they both show a lot of potential as upcoming leaders in the business. RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to:  Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth.  Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders.  Encourage leadership of youth by youth.  Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities. We recently heard Heather and Robert perform and demonstrate their youth leadership skills as guest speakers at a regular Club meeting.

Mercy College Interact Director, Syd Cowan The Mercy College Interact Club raised $11,000 through various projects throughout the year, including the annual Walkathon. These funds were distributed to worthy local charities and community groups. Club members also participated in Relay for Life and assisted at our Club's annual Christmas Fair. Interact members pay regular goodwill visits to residents at Francis of Assisi Aged Care Facility and also distributed Easter eggs to the residents. Each year members arrange and conduct a program for the Iona West 4 Ways, including entertainment and supper, for people with disabilities. Several boxes of text books were sent to the Solomon Islands and members are familiar with the work completed in the Solomon Islands by Rotarians from District 9570. The Interact Club also supports World Vision which assists people in undeveloped countries with food, medical supplies and other vital aid. Interact is promoted throughout the college for Club membership. The Four Way Test is displayed and is a topic of discussion by students who attend English and Religious Education classes, as they realise the importance of ethics in business and professions as well as society in today's world. In recognition of their achievements, Mackay West Rotary Club has nominated Mercy College Interact Club for a Presidential Citation with Rotary International, and if successful we hope the Citation will be presented by DG Ken Kelly. Congratulations to the Interact Club members for their commitment throughout the year and thanks to Mr. Brendan Gunning and other support teachers for their encouragement, guidance and supervision at various events. Thanks also to Barry Ingham and Committee members for attending the fortnightly Interact meetings throughout the year.
