trict Conference in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Over 400 Rotarians attended. You were well represented by Pete (and Jane) McDonald, Curtis Gardner, Lyons Heyman, John Ware, Urs (and Mary) Maire, and Karl Waechtler, who all joined me for the three day event. (Bill Byars, Bruce Watterson and Alan Horne were also there from Rome for 7 Hills.) Our two Rotaractors Kristin Clinton and Paul Sills attended the daily meetings, addressed one of the Plenary sessions, and brought back lots of ideas for Berry's Rotaract Club. Each of them won a door prize. Other members of our delegation winning door prizes included Pete McDonald and Lyons Heyman. The Rotary Foundation WEEK 49 - June 3-9, 2012 MATCHING MONEY WITH PEOPLE FOR POSITIVE RESULTS. The Rotary Foundation has been so effective because it matches money with people. In the words of Arch Klump: “Money alone does little good. Individual service is helpless without money. The two together can be a Godsend to civilization.”

GRSP STORIES—TAMARA M. IVANKOVIC Most days have no impact on the course of a life." - (500) Days of Summer

For me, January 29, 2010 was everything but an unremarkable day. This was the day I was offered a scholarship from the Georgia Rotary Student Program. I do not have the words to describe my joy over hearing YOUR FINANCIAL RESOURCES this news; however, I will tell you that on January 30, 2010 I AND YOUR TIME, ENERGY AND got up at 7 a.m. just to re-read the e-mail from Janis, and you should know that yours truly has been known to snooze for TALENT ARE USEFUL IN THE ROseveral hours on more than one occasion. TARY MISSION. THANK YOU FOR During my GRSP-year I have experienced things that YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS AND YOUR I never imagined were possible. I did not expect to meet a EFFORTS IN SUPPORT OF THE ROformer President of the United States. I did not expect people TARY FOUNDATION AND ROTARY I had never met before to host me as a member of their famiINTERNATIONAL. lies. I did not expect to enjoy this strange testosterone-driven sport you call football, but guess who's cheering for the Dawgs now! I cannot count the many times I have been asked what I like about Georgia and America. I have not been very good at giving an elaborate and thought-out answer, but this time I will give my best try to define what it is about this state, this country and its people I love the most. I love how college plays such a big role in a student's life. It is not just going to class and doing homework; no, we live and breathe UGA. We wear our beloved university on our shirts, we instantly listen when we hear its name mentioned, and we know that we will always be a part of it, and it a part of us. I love the famous Southern hospitality, which never ceases to surprise me. Georgians, especially Rotarians, are among the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. They have opened up their homes for me, helped me whenever I had a question or trouble to be solved, and even stayed up to three in the morning to find and blow up an air mattress for me to sleep on. I also love how easy it is, for me as a foreigner, to talk to new people and make friends. The people I have met have been surprisingly open and interested in learning about me and my differing thoughts, opinions and experiences, even thought they might be a little weird. Thanks to the Rotarians of Conyers, Loganville and Monroe who chose to bring me here, who welcomed me and who made my self esteem and self confidence skyrocket. Thanks to Rotarians and Rotary clubs all over Georgia for having us as your guests during conclaves and travels. Thanks to my beautiful, wonderful and talented co-scholars for sharing this journey with me. Our year as GRSP students is not over yet. In three or four months' time most of us will have left Georgia for our home countries. However, I am going to let you in on a little secret - our GRSP-year will in fact never end. I am certain that we will not fully comprehend and appreciate the wonders of this experience until later on. As the years go by, I think we will look back with fond memories and see each day spent in GRSP as remarkable, and having great impact of the rest of our lives. Now, there might be some things I will never understand - like the appeal of grits, why I cannot find a duvet at WalMart, or whether a Southerner is talking about a pin or a pen. Still, Georgia will always be on my mind. And you know what? I say sir and ma'am, because I was raised in the South! 5

MAKE-UPS Since Rotary e-club has changed its site, I’m getting very few make-ups from members. Before the average was five to ten a week; that’s dropped to one or two. Either few are worried about attendance or they are not getting to me. Until we know what’s going on, I suggest you drop me a separate e-mail letting me know how many articles you have read. I’ll take care of the rest. ...Peg Arey [email protected]
