President’s Message

Gary CK Huang Pres. R.I.

I am not sure if “Murphy’s Law” was thrust upon us last week at the CQ Conservatorium but, after a very entertaining presentation by Judith Brown and her accompanists, we learned that our caterer had forgotten about our food order. Some take-away food outlets probably had increased patronage for the night. This is the second occasion that we have attended a “Judith, Stuart and Friends” presentation and, based on our attendances, we should consider including this in our program as an annual ladies night. On the bright side, we were very pleased to make a donation of the meeting fees collected for the night to the YWAM Training and Medical Ship that Greg Sandral had arranged for our Club to tour. From all reports, the tour of the ship last Thursday was most enjoyable and our donation was gratefully accepted by them. This week we have Murray Gibbs and Ron Poulson from Pioneer Valley Rotary with an update on their very important project to provide support for drought stricken communities in western Queensland. I have included in this week’s Bulletin, a letter received from PDG John Lamb thanking the Club for our donation to Australian Rotary Health last year. ARH Hat Day is coming up on 10 October and our International Director, Gautham is proposing that our meeting on 8 October be a “Hat Day” night with an international theme and fund raiser for ARH. More on this in the coming weeks. Directors please note: we have a Board meeting at 5pm this week.

John and June McKay John and June McKay are comfortably home at Unit 6, “Nelsons on the River” and would appreciate a visit from those who would like a cup of tea and a natter about what is going on at your place. Those of us who were fortunate enough to attend the District Conference at Longreach earlier in the year would have been delighted to meet and hear Karen Jacobsen’s presentation which was about “Recalculating” when necessary on our journey through life. Karen’s presentation was motivational, with an emphasis on Mental Health. John and June are strong supporters of the “Australian Rotary Health Research Fund” and the Fund’s work on Mental Health. Hat Day is scheduled for Friday the 10th of October, this is Rotary Health’s major fund raiser for the year, I am confident in saying that John & June would be pleased to see the Club support Hat Day, as indeed would Meryl & Ian Ritchie who are also strong supporters of Rotary Health. The message below from Karen arrived by email, she appears to be on course.

Dear Ones, It has been quite some time since we had the joy of being together in Longreach at the Rotary District Conference. It was a great pleasure to experience your conference. You’re receiving this email as you asked for The GPS Girl’s 5 Directions for Recalculating. I hope you have been successfully “recalculating” in the meantime! Our Summer has seen me traveling to perform in California and Mexico, and loved a train adventure down to Washington D.C. and up to Montreal, Toronto and the incredible Niagara Falls. Back in NYC our son has now started First Grade. We feel so fortunate he loves school. Below you will find the 5 Directions. Perhaps our paths will cross again, and I will keep you posted from time to time. Karen xo

Dear Rotarians:

Twenty Rotarians, Rotaryannes and guests took the opportunity to visit the YWAM (Youth With a Mission) new medical ship whilst it was visiting Mackay last week. YWAM is a non-denominational Christian international organisation of volunteers which has a base in Townsville to administer the medical ship’s work in Papua New Guinea. This visit is part of a fundraising effort to pay for the new ship which the organisation is currently in a lease to buy agreement. Five million dollars is needed to pay for the ship and fit it out. The PNG Government has donated the first one and a half million dollars to show their commitment to the YWAM organisation and the work they do in the PNG isolated provinces. This ship is the MV Ammari which some of you will remember as a tour ship in the Whitsundays. The Ammari will supersede the existing ship and will increase the groups operational capacity in PNG by up to 500%

There were many volunteers on board with the majority sporting a north American accent. We were shown through much of the boat including volunteer accommodation and a basic dental chair complete with solar powered implements. The chair can be folded up to fit in a backpack and they have been used by PNG locals travelling about the rivers in dugout canoes to treat patients.

As well as funding the group is looking for volunteers for two week outreach stints in PNG. Volunteers of all backgrounds are welcome with a medical background not necessary. All you need to do is get yourself to PNG and they will pick you up at the airport and look after you from there.

You can access their website which is full of information on the amazing work they carry out in PNG and how you can help. http://ywamships.org.au/

Cheers!

Following an impromptu collection from members at the Conservatorium the previous night Mackay West Rotary was pleased to make a donation of $640 to YWAM’s appeal. Naomi Callender from the Townsville City Campus accepted the donation on behalf of the organisation.
