PAUL’S PONDERINGS At last weeks meeting our guest speaker was Bright B Chinganya who spoke about the Carers of Africa. Bright's organisation is doing a wonderful job in Africa where there is so much work to be done, and we need so many organisations to share the work load as there is such a huge task ahead. Just a reminder that there is no meeting this Monday, as it is ANZAC DAY. Speaking about ANZAC DAY, and if you are out and about and you see someone selling ANZAC Badges, please stop and buy one as the money goes to a really good cause. And on ANZAC DAY please take time out to remember our service men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice and in doing so forged a nation. It really pleases me that every year at the Dawn Service the attendance continues to grow, which means that their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Catch you all on the 2nd May. Yours in Rotary Paul They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun, and in the morning We will remember them. They run various local and international services and projects. At the moment they are concentrating on Zambia in Africa with a major project being the establishment of a Carers of Africa Zambia Medical Centre. The intention is to spread to other African nations depending on the success of the Zambia projects. CHANGEOVER Goodbye Paul, WELCOME CHRISTINE

POLIO FACTS In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $9 billion to the effort. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building. Today, there are only two countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Less than 370 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2014, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day. So far only ten cases have been reported in 2016. The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks. Every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year through 2018. These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents. Governments, corporations and private individuals all play a crucial role in funding.

Good morning Fellow Rotarians Our Club is having a very special speaker on Wednesday. As we are coming up to “Bowel Cancer” month President Lorraine has been able to secure the services of one of Australia’s foremost authorities on the topic. Here is a (very) abridged bio prepared by Lorraine: “On Wednesday, April 27, Associate Professor Joe McKendrick will visit our club to present to members and guests an update on the advances in the treatment of Bowel Cancer. Bowel cancer is the second most common type of newly diagnosed cancer in Australia affecting both men and women almost equally and is Australia's second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer. Joe is a consultant medical oncologist and was previously Director of Medical Oncology, Clinical Haematology and Palliative Care at Eastern Health. He has significant expertise in genitourinary cancers (with a particular interest in testis cancer), gastrointestinal cancers, lymphoma and other haematological malignancies. He completed his advanced training and MD thesis at the University of Southampton where he gained expertise through working in one of the busiest academic urological and lymphoma units in the world. He has clinical trial experience in a wide range of cancers and continues as principal investigator in a number of clinical trials in Eastern Health. He is regarded as one of Australia's most experienced clinicians in the management of testicular cancer and lymphoma.” Cluster Club Leaders and other recipients: Please circulate this information among your Members for their consideration of this very important night. It is a Partner’s Night and best results for topics like this is for Partners to be aware as well. What if one person who hears Joe speak on this night can be saved the agony of bowel cancer? The details are: When: Wednesday, April 27 Where: Beau Monde International Hotel, 934 Doncaster Road, Doncaster East Time: From 6.15pm for 7pm commencement (8.15pm conclusion) Price: $33 per person EFT details can be sent direct to attendees or card facilities are available at the desk. If you, or any of your Members, would like to attend please contact me before 3pm on Tuesday, April 26, to reserve your place.
