Derricks Ditherings

Earlier in the month (Saturday 7th.) President Elect. George and myself attended the District Council in Romsey. I know that my fellow Rotarians have mixed feelings about Rotary District 1110 and the influence they may or may not have on our Club administration and our day to day intent. However, I find that talking to the various District Officers and listening to other Rotarian enthusiasts about their “big” projects can be quite inspirational. It does no harm to put aside the club’s problems for a short time and to engage in the good and challenging work that RIBI and Rotary International do in the world. I would encourage all club members (not just the officers of the club) to make the effort and come along to a district meeting once in a while. On the first weekend in March the club carried out a collection at the Tesco Store in Ferndown. John Lewis our Community Service Chairman organized everything including Tesco, a good number of Rotarians and the weather to ensure it’s success. Net proceeds a total of £577. A good total in the circumstances and our grateful thanks to John and Barbara who seemed to have been present at the store almost full time, well done to you both, a great effort. Also many thanks to all the Rotarians who were able to assist over that week-end.

The President’s Night at the Canford Magna Golf Club was most enjoyable with a good attendance of Rotarians and their Partners. As is usual the service and catering was excellent and it would seem that everyone had a great Top Cop time. My grateful thanks to all those who helped in its organisation, before and during the dinner. I suspect there may be some additional information in News from Inner Wheel our Newsletter shortly. Zip a Dee Do Dah Zip a Dee Ay My Oh My What a wonderful Day Not just a wonderful Day but a great achievement by our intrepid heroes Derrick and Gordon who raised an impressive £250 to add to the Clubs donation of £1000. Meanwhile George who was going to do it with the President chickened out and zipped away to the Continent for some Skiing with Maddy, who for once came back unscathed. Only joking George

News from our French Correspondent PP Dick Bell . Repas

Des Aînés Each year the "Mayor and Corporation" of Breuillet invite all inhabitants over the age of 70 to have a lunch and entertainment grâce à the Council. This is repeated all over France. If you wish to accept you have to be quick as the limit is 180 people on a strict first come first served basis. There is always a long waiting list for cancellations. The menu is not a choice, all is served - Kir Royale and canapés followed by foie-gras, fish, vodka over a lemon sorbet, steak, cheese, caramalised apple in pastry, coffee. All was washed down with pineau de charente, white wine, Bordeaux red, champagne with dessert (three glass) and many cognacs to finish. As soon as a bottle was finished, it was replaced with a full one. Lord only knows the cost but I did not have to pay! This was followed by a folies berger type show with professional singers and dancers. I heard someone remark at the opening sequence " she has no clothes on!" Having started at midday, we finally left at six o'clock. Thank goodness the "Salle de Fêtes" is only 800 yards from home. Remember the age group. There was much speculation how many would be at Dr. Benoit's surgery the following morning.

SPEAKERS WITH A DIFFERENCE at Royan Rotary Club I thought it may be of interest and give Ferndown ideas for future speakers. We had two very interesting speakers recently, both of which are club members. Each meeting was very well attended with wives present at both. 1. “Les Troubles de l’Erection”, given by Dr. Arnaud Bracq, Urologist 2. “L’Historique de la Sexologie”, given by Nadine Callendreau-Dufresse, District Nurse A graphic Powerpoint presentation accompanied each conference and I am sure I do not need to translate the subject titles. If you do ask Julian! p.p.Dick (oops) Thanks Dick but it wouldn’t work with Ferndown we have trouble raising a laugh Neville

A POEM THAT SOME CAN RELATE TO FROM DICK BELL I remember the cheese of my childhood, And the bread that we cut with a knife, When the children helped with the housework, And the men went to work not the wife. The cheese never needed a fridge, And the bread was so crusty and hot The children were seldom unhappy And the wife was content with her lot. I remember the milk from the bottle, With the yummy cream on the top, Our dinner came hot from the oven, And not from the fridge; in the shop. The kids were a lot more contented, They didn't need money for kicks, Just a game with their mates in the road, And sometimes the Saturday flicks I remember the shop on the corner, Where a pen'orth of sweets was sold Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic? Or is it...I'm just getting old? I remember the 'loo' was the lav And the bogey man came in the night, It wasn't the least bit funny Going "out back" with no light. The interesting items we perused From the newspapers cut into squares, And hung on a peg in the loo, It took little to k eep us amused. The clothes were boiled in the copper With plenty of rich foamy suds But the ironing seemed never ending As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds' I remember the slap on the backside, And the taste of soap if we swore Anorexia and diets weren’t heard of And we hadn’t much choice what we wore Do you think that bruised our ego? Or our initiative was destroyed? We ate what was put on the Table And I think life was better enjoyed.

Gerry Clark’s Music is in the air this summer!! www.bournemouthjazzfestival.co.uk

Always looking for a creative challenge, I’ve decided to organize a Summer Jazz Festival in Bournemouth this year which will bring a number of professional jazz musicians to town for this year’s Father’s Day weekend, Friday 19th, Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June. Our Dublin Rotary friends have decided to fly over that weekend, so we should all have a swinging time! Local bands, singers and musicians, covering a wide range of musical styles, ranging from big bands to latin, swing, modern, funky and trad will be playing at various venues around town. An opening night Gala concert will be held at The Riviera Hotel in Alum Chine on Friday 19th June with the 18 piece Swing Unlimited Big Band topping the bill. On the same night, Sarah Bolter’s Jazz trio will be playing at the West-Beach restaurant on the promenade and a special dinner Jazz evening is being cooked up with the Zoe Schwarz Quintet featuring on the main course at the Sandbanks Hotel. Over the weekend there will be a selection of different jazz events at local hotels, bars and restaurants and a number of free concerts in the Town Square, Lower Gardens Bandstand and on the Pier Approach. So put the date in your diary now and make it a smooth weekend by the sea this summer! Zoe Schwarz with her quintet in full swing.

Inner Wheel In March

March in Inner Wheel involved mixed fortunes within the club. At the beginning of the month we sadly received a letter from our president Janet Day who decided to stand down from her position due to her ill health. We were all very sorry about this but anyone who has had such health problems certainly does not need the responsibility of this position, she needs to recover without any pressure. Sue Sismey has been acting as our leader for the last few months so has kindly agreed to carry on. Our Quiz night on March 14 went extremely well and was very well supported. The food provided by our catering corps was brilliant, so everyone should have enjoyed their evening. The speaker at the dinner meeting was a beautician who gave the good and the not so good low down on the subject of botox and similar fillers which hold back the aging appearance. The draw for the next round of District skittles teamed us against Locks Heath club. Unfortunately our team were beaten conclusively by a superior side, so that the end of the contest for Ferndown. Now April is with us perhaps we can all surface from our winter woollies and begin to welcome the spring.

The Golden Years! A row of bottles on my shelf caused me to analyze myself. One yellow pill I have to pop goes to my heart so it won't stop. A little white one that I take goes to my hands so they won't shake. The blue ones that I use a lot tell me I'm happy when I'm not. The purple pill goes to my brain and tells me that I have no pain. The capsules tell me not to wheeze , cough or choke or even sneeze.. The red ones, smallest of them all go to my blood so I won't fall. The orange ones, very bright prevent my leg cramps in the night. Such an array of brilliant pills helping to cure all kinds of ills. But what I'd really like to know...........Is what tells each one where to go!

TOP COP OF THE COUNTY

Thanks to Ferndown Rotary Club, Dorset is just a short step away from having its own copper of the year, the first ever in the county. And it could be the precursor to an annual event that Rotary International in Britain and Ireland (RIBI) aims to extend to cover the nation. An initial list of 22 nominees supplied through as many Rotary clubs in the county has already been slimmed down to just 10, with the ten and the top three places to be drawn from them, to be announced at a glittering ‘Oscars’ ceremony to be staged in Bournemouth on Saturday 25 April. The top three will receive their awards from the Chief Constable for Dorset, Debbie Simpson, and the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner Martyn Underhill in front of an audience that will include the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset; the Mayors of Bournemouth and Ferndown; Dorset Rotary District Governors, Mike Jackson and Judy Barnard-Jones; plus representatives from the various award sponsors. All serving Dorset police officers, special constables and PCSOs were eligible for nomination for The Dorset Rotary Police Community Award 2015, which is based on a similar event imported from Australia by retired police officer Paul Hunter, a member of Ferndown Rotary club. All nominees were judged against a list of five criteria ranging from ‘displays high standards of professionalism’ to ‘carrying out a significant act of bravery/courage‘. Speaking of the Awards, Derrick Powell, President of Ferndown Rotary club, said: ‘We thought it was high time that there was an event that recognised not only the good work done by the police force in Dorset but also the excellence of the people in the force. They are the people who, despite sometimes very difficult and/or dangerous circumstances, provide a very valuable public service that most if not all of us take for granted. ‘At the very least, all the Rotary clubs in the county would want this award to become an annual Dorset event, at best we will do all we can to ensure that it progresses to becoming a national one.’
