Introduction Welcome to Mackay Surf Life Saving Club. The members of the club would like to congratulate you on making the decision to become part of the Lifesaving family. Whether you are about to undergo training in Certificate II in Aquatic Public Safety ( Bronze ) or a Surf Rescue Certificate, you will find at times your training challenging, both physically and mentally, but in the end rewarding and worthwhile. On completion of the course, you will find yourself in great physical shape and have the knowledge, skills and confidence knowing you have achieved your goal. All Active members over the age of 15 are eligible to gain a Surf Bronze Medallion (Cert II in Aquatic Public Safety) or SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate) if aged 13 or above. Once you have gained these qualifications, you will be allocated to a Patrol Group Roster to patrol the beach on weekends and Public Holidays during the season (mid September to early May). The Rostered Patrols are usually once per month. Members may also gain other awards such as Advanced Resuscitation Certificate (ARC), Defibrillation, Operational First Aid and IRB just to name a few. Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is a registered training organisation so awards are nationally accredited and may be used in your workplace. Once again, Welcome to Mackay Surf Life Saving Club and we look forward to seeing you around the club. Management Committee

History Life Saving in Australia The origins of Surf Life Saving can be traced back to the actions of Mr William Gocher, at Manly Beach in September 1902. Up until the start of the century, people had the idea that the human form in a bathing suit was indecent; hence the law stipulated that bathing was prohibited during the daylight. As bathing became more popular with the public defying the law, the law had to be changed. As the law changed and more people visited the beach, surfers were frequently rescuing the public, and so small groups of surfers began to form themselves in life saving groups. As a result, the NSW Surf Bathing Association was formed in 1907 when nine voluntary Surf Life saving Clubs and representatives of the Royal Life Saving Society met and affiliated to represent the interests of Surf Life Savers . The name was changed to the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia (SLSAA) in 1922, before it was renamed in 1991 to the current Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA).

Mackay Surf Life Saving Club History Mackay ‘s first Life Saving Club was formed in 1928, but folded during the depression and World War II, details of how long the club operated and its exact patrol locations are vague, but are believed to have been situated at Illawong (Far Beach) Cremorne and Seaforth beaches and operated as a combination of Surf and Royal Life Saving members. The club reformed in the November of 1949 at a meeting in the old Town Hall in Sydney Street, where they initially chose Eimeo Beach for conducting patrols and beach activities. The current club commenced patrolling Eimeo Beach in January 1950 as the Mackay &District Surf Life Saving Club, and the first Bronze Medallion holders of the club were examined. 1950 was a significant year in the clubs history with the clubs first carnival being held on February 19th, before it was an affiliated club, and our clubs first representative team was selected in October 1950 and competed at the Picnic Bay Carnival in Townsville. 1950 was also the year our club made its first beach rescue in October, when a woman was assisted to shore after she was swept close to rocks. In December 1958, after the development of the Outer Harbour and an increase in its popularity, the club made the momentous decision to transfer patrolling duties to Mackay Harbour Beach (where the Marina is now situated). A splinter group chose a different direction and went to Bucasia where they operated until 1962. After ceasing activities at Bucasia the majority of these members rejoined the club at Harbour Beach and set about establishing a clubhouse.

Mackay Clubhouse 1991

The first clubhouse was built in sections by voluntary labour and officially opened on February 18th 1962, by the then member for Whitsunday Mr R.E.Camm. Improvements were carried out in 1967/8. A junior (nipper) club was formed in 1968 and rapidly expanded into the mid 70’s, the need for a separate clubhouse and facilities became obvious. In 1974/75 the refurbishment of amenities and recreation sections took place. A very energetic committee opened a new clubhouse next to what was the existing clubhouse in October 1980, with a major expansion of the building completed in April 1984. In 1997 the development of the new Harbour wall and Marina necessitated a move further south along the Harbour Beach, where it operated out of dongas for several years until the new clubhouse was built, and stands today. This impressive structure was opened in 2000, incorporating a clubhouse with restaurant/function facilities and is a testimony to the community and governments support the Club enjoys. Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club has been fortunate to host the State Titles in 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2001, and the North Australian Championships every year since 1990.

About Mackay Surf Life Saving Club Mackay Surf Life Saving Club’s main focus is to provide patrolling members to ensure safe bathing for the public of Mackay and visiting guests. This is achieved through dedicated voluntarily patrolling our beach on weekends and public holidays, between the months of September and May inclusively. Harbour Beach is under the supervision of a professional lifeguard, who provides a patrol service on week days all year round. This service is provided by the Mackay City Council. The main requirement of the patrolling members and the lifeguard service is the prevention of potential life threatening situations. The use of surf safety signs, stinger net dragging of the bathing reserve and verbal advice assist in achieving this. Volunteer patrol members patrol in 4 hour shifts, where they may be required to take part in rescues, minor first aid and educating the public in order to maintain a safe swimming environment The Mackay Club forms part of the North Barrier Branch, which spans north to Forrest Beach at Ingham and south to Sarina. Our club is managed by a volunteer management committee consisting of a President, Vice president, Secretary, Junior Activities Chairperson, Treasurer, Director of Surf Lifesaving , Club Captain, Director of Surf Sports, Youth Development Officer, Marketing Officer and Mechanised Gear and Equipment Officer. All positions are elected at the club’s Annual General Meeting generally held in June of each year. The club also employs a part time Administration Officer to assist with club administrative and governance obligations.

Club Facilities and Equipment Gymnasium Mackay Surf Life Saving Club has been working hard to upgrade our gym with more up to date equipment. The gym is open during patrolling hours (9.00am – 5.00pm) unless prior arrangements have been made. Rules are posted on the wall and must be adhered to at all times. The gym is available for use by all financial members aged from 15 years, (younger members may obtain access under the supervision of a member of our coaching team). Remember to bring covered shoes and a towel and to leave the gym area clean.

BBQ Area The BBQ and utensils are available for use by members. Please make sure you clean up the equipment and area after use and ensure there is sufficient gas remaining for the next user.

Boards and skis Mackay Surf Life saving Club has a number of club owned boards and skis for members use, boards are categorised into two areas “competition boards” which are allocated to competing members at the start of season and are marked at the bottom end of the board with the competitors name and “general use boards”, which are marked at the bottom end with MKY for identification, and are available to all members. Equipment is for use by financial members, who are expected to adhere to a common- sense rule of safety and consideration: carry equipment-do not drag it; if the load is too heavy ask for assistance; boards should be laid fin up on the beach; do not stand or jump on equipment whilst on the beach. After use all equipment should be rinsed with fresh water and returned to its location in a sensible manner. There are also a number of ski and board racks available for members to store their personal equipment. Personal equipment is not to be used without the permission of its owners. If you’re not sure what equipment is available for use, please ask.

Boards and skis are very expensive pieces of equipment and should be used with due care and diligence, understandably accidents happen and all damaged equipment should be reported to the equipment officer and tagged for repair.

Patrols Mackay SLSC patrols the Mackay Harbour Beach from September to the end of April on weekends and public holidays, throughout the week there is a paid lifeguard service supplied by the Mackay City Council. Junior Club Activities (Nippers) Nippers is held at Mackay Harbour Beach each Saturday at 2.00pm during the nipper’s season, (generally September to March). The main goal of Mackay’s Nippers program is to encourage surf awareness and safety on the beach, whilst developing skills in water and beach activities; above all, we want our nippers to have fun. The Nippers program involves participation in board paddling, swimming, running, wading and lots of fun games and activities. For those nippers interested, the program also introduces the competitive side of Surf Lifesaving, children are able to compete in branch and state carnivals along with our locally organised tri-series. Surf education is an integral part of our junior activities program and must be completed by all participants; you will find a complete list of nippers awards and proficiencies in the Awards and proficiencies section of this booklet.

We invite and encourage parents to become involved in the Nippers program. Our club is run exclusively by volunteers, and therefore parental involvement is a vital part of our Nipper program. Safety is our first priority at Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club, as a parent/carer you are required to be at the beach at all times during Nipper sessions. Please remember your child remains your responsibility. Nippers is not a child minding service. Nippers are required to wear the appropriate safety gear when participating in Nipper activities which includes a stinger suit, pink hi-vis safety vest and the appropriate age group cap. A Nipper must only wear their cap when participating in a Nipper water event; those enjoying a swim at the beach must do so in the flagged area with their cap removed.

At Mackay we have adopted the Youth Involvement Program (YIP’s) for members in the u/14 to u/19 age groups. The program is designed to motivate, recognise and reward youth, while providing them with the opportunity to explore and become involved in a range of areas within the movement which they may not have previously considered. The structure of the program not only rewards and recognises youth participants for their commitment but also sets achievable goals to encourage ongoing participation across a range of lifesaving activities while promoting leadership skills, personal development and social interaction with peers. YIPs also encourages a sense of organisational commitment and pride and assists clubs with the process of succession planning through the identification of future leaders. How does YIPs Work? The concept is simple! YIPs is a recognition and reward program that is self-paced and can be completed in three years, give or take depending on the member. The rewards program operates utilising a similar concept to that of frequent flyer points where participants collect points for being involved in a range of lifesaving activities. The more activities they engage in and the more hours they volunteer, the greater the points collected. YIP’s is designed to encourage youth participation in all areas of club activity including:        

Lifesaving Development Competition Administration Junior Activities (nippers) Youth Activities Club Activities Community Project (gold level only)

Participants can choose their level of involvement and the areas that they are specifically interested in. By collecting points, three levels of achievement can be attained which include:  Bronze - Minimum 150 points completed in three YIPs areas and 25 hours patrol  Silver - Minimum 400 points completed in four YIPs areas and 65 hours patrol  Gold - Minimum 800 points completed in five YIPs areas and 115 hours patrol and a community project of significance.

Off the beach, surf lifesavers also have the opportunity to refine their swimming skills in the pool and participate in pool rescue competitions. For more information on surf sport disciplines you can visit www.sls.com.au/members/surf-sport/disciplines At Mackay we have a dedicated team of volunteer accredited coaches to help you develop and improve surf sport skills in preparation for competition. Fundraising Surf Life Saving Clubs are not for profit organisations, which rely on donations and community grants to successfully survive in our communities. As members we rely on your support throughout the year to engage the community in our fundraising initiatives. Along with our own local and club events, Surf Life Saving Queensland runs a number of fundraising events throughout the year designed to engage the community and raise much needed funds. Surf Safe appeal, also known as the annual door knock, is the largest annual fundraising initiative for SLSQ and the Mackay Club. It is an essential fundraiser on our calendar, pivotal in ensuring that our volunteers have access to the necessary equipment and resources to keep our beaches safe. Mackay Surf Life Saving club encourages all members to participate in this annual event. Boardies Day gives you the opportunity to involve your work place or school, in a fun way to help out our surf lifesavers. Mackay surf club would like to encourage you to swap you corporate wear or uniform for your favourite board shorts or beach wear and make a donation. Mackay has involved itself with the Jupiter’s Summer Surf Girl Program; this has proven to be a vital program to assist in raising the clubs profile along with raising valuable funds for our club. Summer Surf Girl is first and foremost a member development program which seeks to engage female members within Surf Life Saving and to develop their skills and experience for their future careers within and outside the movement. The Jupiter’s Summer Surf Girl program highlights women within Surf Life Saving, a role that has changed significantly over the last 49 years. Summer Surf Girls are fully trained lifesavers who perform various operational roles within their clubs including Patrol Member, Patrol Captain, Club Captain, IRB Captain, Youth Development Officer, Junior Activities Coordinator, First Aid Officer, Club Administrators and board positions. Jupiter’s Summer Surf Girl entrants embark on a nine-to-twelve month fundraising campaign with all funds raised (less Administration/Entry fees) going directly back to their respective Club. For the duration of the program, the Jupiter’s Summer Surf Girls become ambassadors for the movement, promoting the importance of Surf Life Saving whilst raising support and valuable funds for their Surf Life Saving Club.
