SKIN DONATION AND SKIN BANKING

The Purpose behind… It is but little you give when you give of your possessions, It is when you give of yourself that you truly give… -KAHLIL GIBRAN

The concept of Skin Banking: • Skin banking is a facility where the skin is collected from eligible deceased donor and processed as per international protocols. • Skin can be stored in the skin bank at 4-80 Celsius up to 5 years.

The Rationality of the Project: • In case of extensive burns, the protective barrier, the skin, is burnt. • It leads to infection which in most cases becomes fatal. • Patients can be saved if one has enough skin available in Skin bank.

Magnitude of the Problem • The estimated annual burn incidence in India is approximately 6-7 million per year. • Majority of the extensively burnt patients die. • Nearly 1 to 1.5 lacs people get crippled and require multiple surgeries and prolonged rehabilitation • Seventy percent of the burn victims are in most productive age group of 15 to 40 years . • Most of the patients belong to poor socio-economic strata. • In Mumbai alone, about 1000 burn patients need donor skin annually. • One burn patient require skin from two donors. • We need about 2000 SKIN DONATIONS for MUMBAI only per year.

Need of Skin • Acts as the most effective dressing. • Acts as a barrier to infection & the rate of infection is reduced significantly. • Reduces the pain. • Lessen the hospital stay. • Increases the survival rate. • Cost of treatment goes down • It is an ideal and cost-effective dressing compared to highly expensive artificial skin substitute like integra. • One piece of 10x10cm skin substitute called Integra costs Rs50,000.

Our Brand Ambassador speaks…

“Your chance for a Heroic Moment. Be a hero…..donating skin is an action that gives a person, in death, a chance for a heroic moment. Burn research suggests, skin removed from a dead person and grafted onto a severe burn victim is the best covering for the victim. but not enough skin is being donated to meet the need.

Our future Goals: • To establish a network of skin banks in all parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat in next two years and throughout India in next five years. • To carry out mass awareness campaign to popularize the concept of skin banking in India. • To form a common helpline for skin and eye donation.
