Cirque Du Soleil's Kooza

Fast facts and show secrets

Brisbanites are no strangers to Cirque Du Soleil's aweinspiring productions but their latest creation, Kooza, might just be the best of them all

The name Kooza is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means “box,” “chest” or “treasure,” chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.”

M

ore than just a show, Cirque Du Soleil's outings are always a major event, a grand experience, an eye-popping acrobatic amazement, and Kooza marks a return to their best. Described as the most acrobatically dangerous show yet, Kooza presents an international cast of 50 acrobats, musicians, magicians, singers, actors and artists on a journey of heartstopping feats in a magnificent, sparkling homage to the traditions of circus. The show combines thrilling acrobatics with the art of clowning to a live soundtrack of jazz, funk and Bollywood beats. With nods to Carnivale, the Day of the Dead, military fashion, rock and roll and 1920s cotton club glamour.

The Trickster

The Innocent

The 725kg Wheel of Death is one of the most dangerous and heart stopping acts where two artists defy gravity, appearing to walk on air.

Kooza trims the fat of previous outings (conceptually speaking only of course) and combines two circus traditions - acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. In typical Cirque Du Soleil jaw-dropping manner, the show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful medley with bold slapstick humor.

There are 175 costumes and 160 hats in the show – 1,080 items in all. One of the Kooza army costumes features more than 400 individually sewn metallic flaps to create an armour look. There’s the ostrich feather cape – truly magnificent and would not be out of place on any red carpet around the world!

"Kooza is about human connection and the world of duality, good and bad,” said the show’s writer and director David Shiner. “The tone is fun and funny, light and open. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s very much about ideas, too. As it evolves, we are exploring concepts such as fear, identity, recognition and power.”

60 semi-trailers are needed to transport the big top, all the equipment, costumes and more from city to city. The big top is climate controlled and seats 2,600 guests.

The show starts with the Trickster bursting onto the scene like a jack-in-the-box in front of The Innocent, and that’s just the first of many surprises to come. The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Heimloss, the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog.

Queensland born chef Shane Schipper runs the Kooza tour kitchen… he sets up each on-site kitchen, creates all the menus, sources local produce and serves lunch and dinner every day for 120 cast and crew across 17 different nationalities.

Kooza explores themes of identity, recognition and power. The show is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world full of surprises, thrills, chills, audacity and total involvement. Kooza has proven so popular down south that the Brisbane season is being extended. The production will now run from November 24 to January 8 and three additional matinee shows have been added on December 15, 21 and 28. Kooza runs November 24 2016 - January 8 2017 at Skygate (next to Brisbane DFO) and tickets start at $60. There are discounts for family and group tickets.

The culinary artists behind Kooza’s VIP Rouge experience are Brisbane’s own Caxton Street Catering under the leadership of Tom Burke. They've been creating custom canapés and menus for the VIP experience during Cirque du Soleil’s Australian tours for 17 years.

The ultimate Cirque du Soleil experience is called 'VIP Rouge' and offers the best seats in the house and access to the intimate VIP suite one hour before the show and at intermission, including good wines, hors d’oeuvres and take home souvenirs. For more show and ticket information, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/Kooza

The Teeterboard act in Kooza flings artists into the air where they execute quintuple twisting somersaults.

Conversations with Leonie

catch Leonie's radio show alternate Mondays at 11.00am on 99.7 Bridge FM

I am my family's scapegoat Hi Leonie,

Hi Tahlia,

I’m very sad as I write this email. I think I’m facing the last straw with my family. I am one of four girls and we are now in our early and late 30s and we have one brother who is 29.

Being an outcast in the family can happen for many reasons. Sometimes it’s a habit the family adopt and a child is actually groomed to be the black sheep over time.

I have always been the odd one out - but not by choice. Although we are all full blooded relatives they are all fair with blonde/sandy hair and I am dark with dark hair – apparently a throw back to my grandfather. I often get mistaken for being Italian. I stand out like a sore thumb in family photos and anyone could be forgiven for thinking I am adopted and in fact the question still gets raised when we are all at social events.

For instance your sisters may have heard the words different, prettier, odd, lovely skin, beautiful dark eyes, not like us and so on. These words of difference may have been associated with you from a very young age and your sisters internalised this and started to only notice the differences and not the similarities that you share with the family.

I am happy being the way I am because honestly, I’m a knock out and have a lovely full figure and my sisters are pasty white and flat chested – I know this but never say this and I can’t believe that I am typing it but I want to be honest. So I don’t have a problem with me – I love me but it seems my family think differently. I just feel so ostracised in every way. I have been the scapegoat all my life for any issue in the family including ridiculous problems that you just wouldn’t believe if they weren’t too numerous to list. If we just look at the last year alone there have been family outings I wasn’t even told about, an art class graduation celebration for mum that they knew I couldn’t attend due to work, a houseboat weekend for Dad’s 70th birthday planned when I was working away (not on his actually birthday). I need to say that I have truly reflected and I have done no harm or bad deed to any one of them they just don’t like me and that’s it. My last straw is that my brother –who usually stays out of drama - is getting married in Bali next year and I am invited but he is paying airfare for everyone else because he says they are not as well off as I am. I have money because I work for it and they don’t.

There is really no excuse for your parent’s behavior and I wonder if they feel that you are showing them up with your success. Ridiculous I know but some people do get threatened by the family member who exceeds expectations, even parents. You seem to think that it is really your appearance that sets you apart and your instincts are probably quite right. Do your sister’s partners stare at you just a little longer than they should? Have you noticed that you get criticised on your choice of hairstyle and clothes by your family? This can be fear based behaviour and jealousy and often a case of trying to pull you down to bring themselves up. I feel that the very first focus of your attention should be to understand, and I mean really understand, that you are not defective, odd or strange. It’s all a lie that has been cultivated over time. Don’t put up with it for one more day. Learn to trust yourself and your instincts and if something feels unfair, don’t buy into it. In the case of your brother, as you say he doesn’t get involved in the drama he may really admire you for achieving as you have and feel that you are one less burden on him. He could have decided to stay out of the toxic interplay so his wedding will go well so do make sure that you don’t throw him in the same category until you are sure. Pick up the phone and have an honest chat with him about everything so you know where you truly stand.

I am heartbroken and wonder what you would say to me. I am up here at Redcliffe til the End of November so no one will know who I am if you print my problem before I go. Thank you so much in advance.

My advice is to build your own safe place in life as you don’t feel you have this with your family of origin. Turn your face towards people and friends who are respectful and see the good in you and don’t look back at what should have been. You seem to have wonderful self esteem despite your family’s sabotage efforts. Well done in deed because many are not able to see the good in themselves after years of prejudice and scapegoating by those who are meant to nurture us.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said the region’s population is expected to be greater than 620,000 by 2031 To have your say on our region's infrastructure visit yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov.au

Moreton Bay Infrastructure Have your say on future transport, stormwater and community infrastructure

M

oreton Bay Regional Council is encouraging local residents to have their say and help shape the region’s future transport, stormwater and community infrastructure with community consultation now open for the draft Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP).

Until Wednesday, December 21, residents will be able to provide feedback on the proposed LGIP, which outlines council’s vision for vital trunk services including new roads, stormwater drains and open spaces that will benefit the region’s growing community. Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said with the region’s population expected to be greater than 620,000 by 2031, the draft LGIP was an important instrument to help guide growth and balance both the current and future needs of the Moreton Bay Region. “Council’s essential trunk infrastructure can be divided into three components: transport, stormwater and community facilities, and as the Moreton Bay Region continues to grow, it is important that we plan for and review these services through documents like the draft LGIP,” Mayor Sutherland said. “Working with the community is an important step in getting the balance right, and this consultation period allows us to do just that. “The LGIP will replace the Priority Infrastructure Plan (PIP) in council’s planning scheme to align with State Government requirements. It incorporates many of the PIP’s elements that were consulted on during the draft planning scheme, while also taking into account our region’s projected economic, population and employment growth. “Once finalised, the proposed LGIP will act

as a platform for council and the community to deliver a well-planned trunk infrastructure program and will form the overarching document that outlines where such infrastructure will be delivered, when it will be delivered and how it will be delivered.” Council’s Planning and Development Spokesperson Councillor Mick Gillam said there were a number of ways residents could view the proposed LGIP. “Accessing the draft LGIP is as easy as visiting yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov.au or dropping into one of council’s three customer service centres during the consultation period,” Cr Gillam said. “The website and customer service centres will have the plan in its entirety for you to peruse, as well as associated documents and supporting maps. “During the consultation period, you can also call council’s planning advice line on 5433 3496 from 8.30am to 5pm to talk to directly to planning staff. “From there you can submit your feedback in a number of ways including online on council’s website, via email, mail or by handing your written submissions into any of council’s customer service centres. “Following the consultation period, council will consider all properly made submissions before lodging the proposed LGIP for State Government review.”

Queensland’s ‘Best Planning Idea’ Moreton Bay Region’s University Precinct has been awarded Queensland’s Best Planning Idea for 2016. The 2016 Awards for Planning Excellence were held last week in Brisbane, and Moreton Bay Regional Council took out a major gong for The Mill at Moreton Bay. The planned university site, formerly the Petrie Paper Mill, was declared a Priority Development Area in September 2016 by Queensland Deputy Premier, Jackie Trad MP. The prime 460 hectare piece of land will be transformed into a vibrant urban community, with Petrie town centre and the new University of the Sunshine Coast campus at its core. Mayor Sutherland said it was a huge honour to win the state-wide award and also go into the running for the national awards next year. “This state-of-the-art project will feature a major new university, a train station, and host community, sporting and commercial activities onsite,” Mayor Sutherland said.

Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Kate Isles was also awarded Queensland’s Planner of the Year, having helped spearhead Moreton Bay’s first region-wide planning scheme, Mayor Sutherland said the proposed LGIP a new economic development strategy, a formed part of council’s living framework master plan and activation strategy for the approach to the region’s planning scheme and would help to ensure the scheme remains Redcliffe foreshore area, and development of an incentive policy and new customer contemporary and adaptable to the everservice charter for council. changing needs of the community. “As part of council’s planning scheme, it shapes how we want to see our region develop and that the right development occurs in the right places,” Mayor Sutherland said.

Bee Gees Way scored a commendation in the Great Places category. Bee Gees Way has become one of our region’s most iconic tourism destinations and a huge hit with people from all over the world. The famous memorabilia walkway attracts 70 tour bus visitations per year.

A Roar from the North Lakes Lions Club Den

Local Lions have set their sites on 2017 Writes Chris Doyle

H

ello there, I’m sure regular readers of this article who follow the reports I have written on what we do at the North Lakes Lions club, will be interested in the feedback we have received in the form of the positive letters, emails, phone calls and conversations we’ve enjoyed, since the hosting of the District 201Q3 Lions Convention last month, held here at North Lakes. The October 15th edition of the Messenger, which featured members of our club on the cover, a comprehensive story and several photographs of the many different highlights, was much appreciated by all and we publicly thank Editor Dan Fidler and his team for such extensive coverage. As we wind down the 2016 Lions year, ready to embark on the festive season, we are now setting our sights on 2017. The over-riding comment we continually receive, is that we are such a happy club, remembering that back in 2015, our club won the inaugural national competition, being the search for “The Happiest Lions Club in Australia” award. We refrained from entering the competition this year,

however we’re feeling that next January will be the time to concentrate on endeavouring to win back the title which depicts us so well. Yes! dear readers, we’re going for broke to be known Australia wide, yet again! as “The Happiest Lions Club in Australia”. Our club will be manning the Bunning’s North Lakes BBQ on Saturday the 19th of November, so please be sure to grab a sausage & a drink from our members whilst doing your shopping. Also, we will have Lions Christmas Cakes & Puddings etc. for sale in the doorway, so be sure to get yours then.

Are you new to North Lakes? joining our club is a terrific way to make new friends and integrate into the community. We make our meetings pro-active and interesting, we invite informative guest speakers, we enjoy great food and facilities and above all, we create a happy and social atmosphere. Become a member of North Lakes Lions Club by phoning our Membership Officer Lion Greg Milne directly, on 0449 294 734. He’ll answer any initial questions you may have and invite you to our next Dinner meeting. Till next time, Lion Chris.

Redcliffe Table Tennis to close All previous players invited to last hurrah

H

istoric local club, the Redcliffe Table Tennis Association, is set to close doors after 25 years.

What was once a social mecca for players of all skill levels across the region will shut shop on Friday 25th November 2016. The club committee would like to invite all previous players to drop in and catch up on the remaining Friday nights leading up to the closure. Club president Terry Denny thanked supporters at news of the closure. "We would like to thank all the expressions of interest that have been received by our club, since the expressed closure. It is disappointing though that no non-profit organizations have taken up the challenge to continue the table tennis tradition in Redcliffe" he said. "The club has been in existence for 25 years at its current location of the Clontarf High School Gymnasium. The gymnasium has provided the club with one of the best facilities for table tennis in South East Queensland so it is sad for table tennis players, and Redcliffe, to lose such a facility." Your last chances to enjoy the club are Fridays 18 and 25 November, 7.30pm at Clontarf High School Gymnasium in Isobel Street Clontarf.

Stroke rehab services fall short A national audit of stroke rehabilitation services has found a lack of appropriate hospital systems and processes is compromising patient safety, causing unnecessary suffering and adding increasing cost to the health system. writes Dr Anita, Brisbane North PHN

T

he Stroke Foundation, which released its report earlier this month, claimed stroke survivors and their families were being left to languish, ill informed and alone due to a rehabilitation health care system that does not support their ongoing needs. Despite significant advancements in treatment and care for stroke sufferers, Stroke Foundation CEO Sharon McGowan said in four years Australia’s rehabilitation stroke care system had made little to no improvement and in some areas had even gone backwards. “It is inexcusable that services are not meeting the essential care elements and ignoring best practice guidelines,” Ms McGowan said. “Australia has some of the best and brightest health professionals working in stroke rehabilitation but a lack of appropriate hospital systems and processes continue to hinder best practice. “Stroke survivors deserve the opportunity to make their best recovery possible, we can and must do better to assist them in achieving their recovery goals,” she said.

But the recent audit has revealed that 44 per cent of stroke rehabilitation services do not routinely use the recommendations in the best practice guidelines to inform clinical care, and only one in ten offer a dedicated stroke rehabilitation unit. Stroke Foundation Clinical Council member Dr Annie McCluskey said the audit results highlighted that the emotional and psychological needs of patients continued to be neglected. “It is well recognised that mental and emotional wellbeing can significantly impact a patient’s rehabilitation and ultimately their quality of life, yet there has been no improvement in this area since the audit began (2008),” Dr McCluskey said. “Too many patients are not getting an assessment for these common complications, and patients who have been identified as needing support or treatment are not being provided with the necessary care. “Even more alarmingly, patients are not being prepared for the often long and challenging recovery journey which continues after hospital discharge.

420,000 people were living with stroke in Australia in 2012.

Same-sex adoption now legal in Queensland S

ame-sex adoption is now legal in Queensland bringing us in line with New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia and Tasmania. The new laws were passed despite the LNP voting against them.

The change to the law follows a statutory review of the state’s Adoption Act 2009, which asked community members to share their experience of adoption and make recommendations about how the process can be improved. Minister for Communities Shannon Fentiman said the Adoption and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 passed in the Queensland Parliament last week. “Discriminatory barriers that prevent LGBTI Queenslanders from being able to adopt a child have no place in our community or in our laws,” Ms Fentiman said. Ms Fentiman said the reforms will also remove the offence and penalty for a breach of contact statement for adoptions prior to June 1991, facilitate face-to-face contact Ms Fentiman said the new law will also during interim adoption orders between improve access to information by an adoptee, an adoptee and their birth family, improve access to information and streamline the step- birth parents or an adult relative. parent application process. “This recognises the difficulties in tracing “Offence provisions are associated with past family members who have lost contact with practices that are no longer appropriate,” Ms the department, and the importance to people over generations to gain this information in Fentiman said. order to both preserve their family history “The removal of these provisions will further and their own personal story,” she said. honour the apology given by Parliament to Queenslanders who were affected by past forced adoption practices.”

Australian Lawyers for Human Rights (ALHR) welcomed the introduction of Same Sex Adoption in Queensland with

ALHR LGBTI Rights Subcommittee Co-Chair Kathryn Cramp saying, "It is heartening to see this legislation supported by the Labor government and Independents Rob Pyne and Billy Gordon to correct a clear case of discrimination. This legislation is about providing the same rights to same sex couples seeking to build their families and to make the law fair." There were 10 local adoptions and 19 intercountry adoptions in Queensland during the 2014/15 period.

The Lighting of the Christmas tree Date: 25 November Time: 5:30PM Location: King George Square, Brisbane CBD Cost: Free

Mad Max: Beyond Endeavour-dome

This is without doubt the worst suburb we have ever lived in for hooning cars and motorbikes. They seem to use Endeavour Boulevard and other roads in the centre of town like the straight at Phillip Island and race up and down at full throttle. To make matters worse, they are way over the legal sound level. It can be at any time of the day or night. It must be awful for the senior citizens living in the retirement villages on Endeavour. I have actually seen them crossing this road in their electric buggies which is like Russian roulette. We have reported it to the Police and also to the council, but no-one really seems bothered. Does anyone else feel the same? Cheers, John

Gather in King George Square at sunset on Friday 25 November with family and friends to celebrate the Lighting of the Christmas Tree. A Brisbane tradition, this event marks the beginning of the festive season, with carolers and free entertainment from 5.30pm. When the sun has set, special guests will join Lord Mayor Graham Quirk to officially flick the switch to light up the Brisbane City Christmas Tree at 6.30pm. This free event is the perfect way to kick off Christmas in Brisbane with your family.

Bush Poet Long John Best gave us all some food for thought with his recent submission: ‘Let’s put some fun in funeral ads’ His line: ‘They fake concern, “How are you faring?” method actors, “let’s do caring“, Think of all the loot they’re sharing.“’ particularly resonated with me.

That’s why we created a not-for-profit funeral company. Families have peace of mind, knowing that their loved one’s funeral is ‘helping the world they left behind’ and not lining pockets. All our surplus profits support local and international projects that make the world a better place. The only people who benefit are the families we serve and people who are in need. After all, isn’t helping others what life’s really all about? Trevor Hooper, Manager Sovereign Funerals Thank you Stellarossa My Mum recently fell and hit her head hard at the local Coles shops (Mango Hill) and Gordon the local Stellarossa owner, stopped and sat with my Mum, provided first aid, sheltered her with an umbrella, made her laugh, was incredibly kind! On behalf of my Mum and our whole family we would like to express our thanks! Thanks very much, Lisa Public Tap Removal Just wondering aloud why council has removed the public taps along the foreshore where many of use the amenities for recreation? Specifically Pelican Park at Woody Point (opposite Luke Howarth's office). Given the range of activities we can partake it at this spot, can we get the taps back please? Your Stars Aquarius Jan 21-Feb 19: Your idea of worth may be getting in the way of value. Separate figures from feelings. Yourself image is muddying the waters. Pisces Feb 20-March 20: Not the time to press for what you want. People are too absorbed with their own trials and tribulations to be of any help. Aries March 21-April 20: Works a mess and that’s fine by you. There’s nothing like small fires to put out to keep your mind of more looming problems. Taurus April 21-May 21: Money problems are really eating away at the foundation of your relationship. It’s time to talk. Gemini May 22-June 21: Today is one of those rare occasions when the problem really isn’t one of your own making. Happily grab a chair and coach from the sidelines. Cancer June 22-July 23: Your mood isn’t going to help matters. You need to move on from the past and focus on the positive. For the sake of your mental health, and of those around you. Leo July 24-Aug 23: Could costs get any higher? Good question, but you may not want to ask out loud. You don’t want to tempt fate. Virgo Aug 24-Sept 23: Stop trying to please someone who can’t be pleased. The sooner you stop jumping through hoops for them, the better it will be for all concerned. Libra Sept 24-Oct 23: Beware of helpful advice this week. It’s aimed at making you settle for less when you could accomplish so much more. Scorpio Oct 24-Nov 22: This is not the time to ask what you have gotten yourself into. It’s time to knuckle down and finish what you started. Sagittarius Nov 23-Dec 21: If you can’t please anybody today then do something for yourself. At least you’ll know one person in the room that will be happy. Capricorn Dec 22-Jan 20: Your doing a lot better than you think, but feel free to rake yourself over the coals of self-recrimination if it does something for you. insta: messengermagazine

Our Women’s Group had a holiday on Melbourne Cup day so we could pursue our own Cup events, or alternatively meet up with friends for movies or lunch. Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup started with a field of twenty-four horses and finished with a two-horse race between Heartbreak City and Almandin. What a race! Between now and Christmas our calendar gets quite busy, especially with an extra Tuesday this month and with our Christmas break-up only one month away. TUESDAY 22nd November 10:15 SINGING AT INVERPINE RESIDENTIAL VILLAGE, 54 Ogg Rd, Murrumba Downs. A fun event with a bit of hilarity thrown in as a measure of our Xmas Wishes for the residents.
