Stewardship Reflections 20 Sunday in Ordinary Time “For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” Luke 13:30 th

Our standards in our society are so different from God’s standards. We often rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.

Reflections by Father Karl 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Last week the gospel challenged us to think about faith and what it is. St. Paul gave us a definition, “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” This week, continuing in Hebrews, St. Paul speaks of us being surrounded by “clouds of witnesses” and the presence of these witnesses allowing us to put aside sin and concentrate on Christ. St. Paul points out an essential truth of the Christian Faith—we need the witness of other people in order to believe. Without others in the Church to inspire us and guide us we could not believe. Without the guidance of the Church the events in the History of Salvation would appear to be random footnotes in history. The Holy Spirit teaching through the Church explains these events and allows us to see them as a cohesive whole. We would have no reason to understand the teaching and preaching of the Old Testament prophets, the ministry, the life, death and resurrection of Christ, or the experience of the early Church as being related. We believe that Christ is the Son of God because the Church has told us. We believe that Christ is both God and man because the Church has taught us. We have the scriptures because the early Church decided which writings are inspired and which are not. For the first three centuries of the Christian Church the faith was conveyed mainly by word-of-mouth. The only Jesus we can ever know is the Jesus preached by the Church. The good news is that God calls us as a family, the Church, to be his followers. We don’t need to do this alone; rather, we are surrounded by “clouds of witnesses” who encourage, direct, and guide us each day.
