Stewardship Reflections 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time “My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established…” Luke 16:25-26 When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the chasm in the next life.

Reflections by Father Karl 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s reading we hear the story of Lazarus and the rich man. Although we all have heard this story many times it remains an inexhaustible source for meditation and self-reflection. The story is simple: the rich man lived a life of ease and comfort and Lazarus lived in misery. The rich man saw Lazarus but never lifted a finger to help or even acknowledge his miserable plight. The rich man was able to look past and not see Lazarus as he lived in misery—this is the rich man’s sin. The lack of concern for the poor among us or the incapacity to even see the poor is a serious matter in the eyes of God. The rich man’s self-obsession controlled his life. He was one of those people that went through life thinking only of his personal wants and directing all his efforts toward getting what he wants. From his place in eternal torment the rich man is still trying to get his way—he wants Lazarus to bring him water! His self-obsession continues into eternal life. In the truest sense the rich man’s self-obsession becomes his punishment. From Hell he tries to control others but he cannot. The Gospel states that between Lazarus and the rich man in torment there is “fixed a great abyss” that no one may cross—this is why Lazarus cannot help the rich man. An abyss divides places or people but we could ask whether God could be the maker of such an abyss. It seems impossible that God could create division. Rather, the rich man has made an eternal decision to reject God and that is the source of the division. He cannot cross from one side to the other because he can no longer choose to serve God. In a similar manner Lazarus cannot cross over because he has made an eternal choice to be with God. Condemnation is not something that God imposes on us because of our sins: in truth, we choose condemnation by our actions and manner of living. Our sinfulness makes it difficult to choose good over evil and turn toward God. Furthermore, our choice for the good must be backed up by our actions. We cannot at once love and serve God while simultaneously hating our neighbor and neglecting the poor.
