FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Paragraphs §53 and §54 of the Apostolic letter Dies Domini present to us two exceptional circumstances: one, the Sunday assembly without a priest; the other. the case of those who because of sickness, disability or some other serious cause, are prevented from taking part in Sunday Mass. 1. For those parishes which do not have the ministry of a priest for the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist, which is often the case in young Churches, where one priest has pastoral responsibility for faithful scattered over a vast area, or in countries of long-standing Christian tradition, where diminishing numbers of clergy make it impossible to guarantee the presence of a priest in every parish community, the Church recommends that the Sunday assembly come together even without a priest. Provided that they always keep the indications and directives of the Holy See. Yet the objective must always remain the celebration of the Sacrifice of the Mass, the one way in which the Passover of the Lord becomes truly present, the only full realization of the Eucharistic assembly over which the priest presides in persona Christi, breaking the bread of the word and the Eucharist. 2.Notice that §54 recommends for those who, because of sickness, disability or some other serious cause, are prevented from taking part, should as best they can unite themselves with the celebration of Sunday Mass from afar, preferably by means of the readings and prayers for that day from the Missal, as well as through their desire for the Eucharist. I think it is very important to make this known especially to those who are bed-ridden or home-bound in our community. However, in many countries, like ours, radio and television make it possible to join in the Eucharistic celebration broadcast from some sacred place. Clearly, this kind of broadcast does not in itself fulfil the Sunday obligation, which requires participation in the fraternal assembly gathered in one place, where Eucharistic communion can be received. But for those who cannot take part in the Eucharist and are therefore excused from the obligation, radio and television are a precious help, especially if accompanied by the generous service of extraordinary ministers who bring the Eucharist to the sick. Sunday Mass thus produces rich fruits for these Christians too, and they are truly enabled to experience Sunday as “the Lord’s Day” and “the Church’s day”. During this week we will celebrate the feasts of St. Monica and St. Augustine (August 27th and 28th respectively). Here’s an encouraging quote from Pope Francis during a General Audience last year: “For her children a mother is also able to ask and knock at every door, without calculation; she does so out of love. And I think of how mothers can also and especially knock at the door of God’s heart! Mothers say so many prayers for their children, especially for the weaker ones, for those in the greatest need or who have gone down dangerous or erroneous paths in life.” St. Monica never ceased to pray for her son, Augustine, and for his conversion. Her perseverance paid off when she had the great consolation of seeing him return to the faith and receive Baptism. God heard the prayers of this holy mother, of whom the Bishop of Tagaste had said: “the son of so many tears could not perish.” “How many prayers” –continues Pope Francis– “that holy mother raised to God for her son, and how many tears she shed! I am thinking of you, dear mothers: how often you pray for your children, never tiring! Continue to pray and to entrust them to God; He has a great heart! Knock at God’s heart with prayers for your children.” May God bless you! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE

The ChrisƟan faithful who come together as one in expectaƟon of the Lord’s coming are instructed by the Apostle Paul to sing together Psalms, hymns, and spiritual canƟcles (cf. Col 3:16). Singing is the sign of the heart’s joy (cf. Acts 2:46). Thus St. AugusƟne says rightly, “Singing is for one who loves,”[St. AugusƟne of Hippo, Sermo 336, 1: PL 38: 1472.] and there is also an ancient proverb: “Whoever sings well prays twice over.” General InstrucƟon of the Roman Missal (p39)
