Prayer to the Sacred Heart

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I give myself to You. Take all I do, all my joys, and all my sorrows. Take all of me. I want to be all Yours, and do all things for love of You. Help me to do only what pleases You. Please make my heart like Yours.

Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT

A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings In Jesus’ parable of the Unjust Steward, we encounter a financial manager who has wasted his master’s wealth and faces dismissal from his position. To overcome the crisis confronting him, the steward reduces some very considerable debts owed by poor neighbors to his master in order to help them out. Though the steward has sinned against God and his master by squandering what belongs to someone else, both the prudent way in which he goes about resolving the crisis coupled with relieving people who are in need can be seen as a way to better steward the gifts entrusted to us by God. Although good stewards today acknowledge that they may never use their God-given gifts in a way that completely conforms to the demands of the Gospel, a commitment to using their gifts with prudence and for the purpose of helping their neighbors wins God’s favor.

Marriage Moments & Parenting Pointers

Does your spouse accuse you of being irresponsible? Sometimes you might just have different personality styles, but sometimes it may carry a tad of truth. Even if it hurts, don't ignore the criticism but try to see what truth might be behind the charge. Take one step toward self-improvement. "There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments...and lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus." (Luke 16:19) Are children consumed with wearing the latest, expensive fads? Tell them the story of Lazarus. As a family figure out one way to share your clothes, toys, or tools with those in need this week. By Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

Celebrate Family Day Monday September 23

Family Day is a day set aside to celebrate parental engagement as an effective tool to help keep kids substance free. As children age it is important to keep the lines of communication open. Family dinners offer an opportunity to connect, share and really listen to your kids. Have all family members participate in meal planning, prep, and setting the table. When everyone plays a part, eating together becomes more important for everyone. To start the conversation play best thing/worst thing about your day and let your kids lead the conversation from there. What your children really want at the dinner table is YOU! Try this quick, kid tested, recipe for your next family dinner. Skillet Lasagna 6 servings 1 lb lean ground beef 1 onion, chopped 2 cans (8 oz) tomato sauce 1 cup lowfat cottage cheese 2 1/2 cups uncooked noodles 2 tsp Italian seasoning 1 cup water 4 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded Brown ground beef with onion, stirring until crumbly. Drain in colander and rinse with 1 cup hot water. Spread evenly in skillet. Layer 1 8-oz can tomato sauce, cottage cheese, noodles, and seasonings over ground beef mixture. Top with remaining can of tomato sauce. Pour 1 cup water over layers. Bring to a boil; reduce heat; cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Simmer, uncovered an additional 5 minutes or until cheese melts.

The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

dear Padre When is it OK to take photos in church?

When can I take photographs in church? During my niece’s baptism, I was told to put my camera away. We have a confirmation and a wedding coming up, and I don’t want to get in trouble again. Reverence and courtesy are the issues here. Reverence keeps in mind that what is real about baptism and all the sacraments does not come out in photos. Courtesy notes that other folks are trying to enter into the awe and joy of the mystery, and people trying to take photographs can get in the way or distract. Parishes differ in rules and regulations. Many parishes prohibit the taking of pictures. Certainly taking flash pictures is annoying in a way that taking availablelight photos isn’t. But even with nonflash pictures, there is the lumbering photographer, trying to get around people and into a good spot. Weddings call for photos from approved photographers. In most United States cultures, photos at funeral Masses are out of place. However, I know of a 90-year-old woman who was unable to attend her sister’s funeral. She was extremely upset until her niece thought to record it with her phone. The pastor had no problem with this solution. No matter what the situation, it’s always best to check with the parish office before the event. I hope you get some good pictures. Just be sure to close your eyes in prayer sometimes so you can see what is really going on. John Hamrogue, CSsR 2012 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. Printed in USA. The Library’s Latest

Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items in the library. The parish library has some books and many DVDs in Spanish for both children and adults. The librarian is available after both weekend Masses to gladly assist you in selecting some. In the month of June, we honor our fathers. It is also appropriate we honor our priests, who we recognize as our spiritual fathers.

Pray for Me: the Life and Spiritual Vision of Pope Francis is the

first book about our new Pope, Francis added to the library collection. Robert Moynihan, regarded as one of the world’s leading analyst on Vatican affairs introduces the new Pope by first describing his beginning weeks in the Vatican. We gain an understanding of the warmth and welcoming personality of Pope Francis as he relates to his peers, the press and the public at large. Moynihan then discuses the Holy Father’s family and clerical life in Buenos Aires and then Rome. He talks of his prayer life, spiritual guides and his work as a Jesuit. In the last and perhaps the most interesting part of the book, we read Pope Francis in his own words. Suffering, religion, the future, justice, modernity, youth, freedom are just a few of the topics in which we see the spiritual insights and depth this new Pope brings to our Church and the world. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday mornings. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

Am 8:4–7 / 1 Tm 2:1–8 / Lk 16:1–13 or 16:10–13 I love spending Saturday mornings at garage sales. Recently I held my own sale, and I had even more fun selling than buying. I love seeing what “treasures” others find amidst my leftovers. Often they get so excited it’s as though I’ve just been borrowing the item—it actually belongs to someone else, who has finally come to claim it. We have a tendency to focus on what we own, what we’ve earned, and what is ours alone. We forget that all our stuff, and the ability to acquire stuff, originally comes from God. But how much do we have a right to if others don’t have enough? Jesus’ line from today’s gospel struck me: “If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours?” Certainly our world’s resources belong to all humanity. Are we being trustworthy stewards of these resources? Are we aware of how our use of these resources affects others, especially the poor? The Amos reading reminds us that God observes and remembers how we treat others, particularly those in need. Do you question where your shoes are made, or what the companies in which you hold stock are doing to the environment? Are resources or people being maltreated so you can have easy access to groceries, clothes, and toys? We may not have millions to build a school or rescue an orphaned child in a developing nation—but we can adjust our use of God’s gifts so others are treated more justly and resources are more widely shared. Ultimately, what we have does “belong to another”— to God and to all of God’s children. Janel Esker 2012 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. Printed in USA.
