Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends, No matter what happened on Tuesday, here we are once again, giving thanks to God for the great gifts He has given us and praying that He will help us to be the image of His Son in the world sharing His love, joy, and hope. As always, I am reminded of the saints, who, in the midst of adversity, and oftentimes as a direct result of it, showed forth the brilliant splendor of God in their work for the building up of the Kingdom. One of those saints actually prayed in our parish. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini came to Seattle to minister to the Italian immigrants and to establish schools, orphanages, and hospitals as she did in many other places (New York, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and also in various cities in South America). Something that sets Seattle apart from all these other cities is that Mother Cabrini became an American Citizen here in 1909. During her time here, she came to Renton to visit the Italian immigrants and ask her “boys” to support her endeavors. I have been told that she knew when pay day was at the mines and would often visit on those days. This Sunday, November 13, is her feast day. May she bring for us a light to guide us on in our vocation. Here is an excerpt of the history recorded on the St. James Cathedral website at http://www.stjames-cathedral.org/history/ saints.aspx. On March 31, 1889, Mother Cabrini reached New York City after the first of many trans-Atlantic voyages, and immediately began founding schools, orphanages, and hospitals in the face of prodigious obstacles. She approached the task with that energy which would become legendary. “With your grace, my sweet Jesus, I will follow you until the end of my days and forever,” she would pray. “Help me, Jesus, because I wish to do so with ardor and speed.” Foundations in Nicaragua, New Orleans, and Brazil followed rapidly, and she came to Seattle in 1903. “Here we are, not far from the North Pole,” she said, quite seriously, on arriving in the Pacific Northwest. She loved the young city, which she described in glowing terms (her childhood enthusiasm for geography stood her in good stead): This city is charmingly situated, and is growing so rapidly that it will become another New York… The town of Seattle spreads over twenty hills; and though it is fifty degrees north latitude, it enjoys an interminable spring because of the current that comes from Japan… The bishop is very good. His name is O’Dea, and he is happy to have us in his diocese because we bear the name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Seattle had a large population of Italian immigrants, and she found that “some of them have not seen a church for over 20, 30, 40, and 50 years.” She immediately set about remedying the situation by founding Mt. Carmel Mission on Beacon Hill, followed by a school which later developed into Our Lady of Mount Virgin School and Parish. In 1918, the sisters moved to a location on Lake Washington, which Mother Cabrini had seen in a dream (Sacred Heart Villa, now Villa Academy). “You, in such a short time, have done wonders!” she exclaimed in admiration. In establishing Columbus Hospital, she ran into difficulties. She had, with much trouble and many prayers, acquired the Perry Hotel which stood on Madison Avenue between Boren and Terry. Bishop O’Dea came to bless the building and asked her what she intended to do with it. When she told him that she wished to found a hospital, immediate objections arose. There were fears that this hospital would be too much competition for Providence, the only other Catholic hospital in the city, located nearby on Capitol Hill. Bishop O’Dea withdrew his support and in fact forbade her to found the hospital. This opposition was devastating to her. “It is I who have alienated the blessing of God,” she told her daughters. “When I shall have gone, everything will be better.” In her suffering, she had recourse to prayer, and she must have come very often at this time to pray at St. James Cathedral, just a block away. When she left Seattle in November 1916, Mother Cabrini was already very ill. But before she died on December 22, 1917, Bishop O’Dea had relented, and she had the happiness of knowing that Columbus Hospital was well on its way to completion. Bishop O’Dea was the first bishop to proclaim her publicly as one of the greatest women of the twentieth century. She was sixty-seven years old at the time of her death. She had long before chosen as her motto the words Omnia possum in eo qui me confortat—“I can do all things in Him who comforts me.” The abundance of Mother Cabrini’s accomplishments seem to prove St. Paul’s bold statement true. In His Most Sacred Heart,

Fr. Jack D. Shrum Pastor

That the countries which take in a great number of displaced persons and refugees may find support for their efforts which show solidarity. That within parishes, priests and lay people may collaborate in service to the community without giving in to the temptation of discouragement. 2

This is the final weekend of our venerable Breaking Bread. Throughout the week, helpers and I will be phasing in the new “Sacred Song” hymnal into our pews. I do hope it isn’t a shock as these books are a wonderfully rich resource with a variety of hymns, Propers, prayers, and all at a fraction of the price of Breaking Bread. You’ll also notice a new pew card with our Advent Ordinaries (Mass Parts). Advent is a wonderful opportunity to pull back with hopeful expectation and our liturgical music will reflect this change by being more reserved, nuance, and restrained. These new Mass parts will start on November the 27th and we’ll practice them this weekend and next. -Whittaker Vigil of Remembrance – November 14, 2016 During the month of November, we remember those that we have lost and pray that they have joined the Saints in heaven. You are invited to join us for our prayerful Vigil of Remembrance Service on Monday, November 14th at 11:00am in the parish. There will be lunch following in the Fr. Lane Room. Kindly contact Miranda Harpel-McGaw at [email protected] or (425)277-6208 with questions or to RSVP. Anointing of the Sick Mass Our semi-annual Anointing of the Sick Mass will be held at St. Anthony’s on November 17, 2016, begins at 11:00am (kindly arrive at 10:45am). Following Mass, there will be a light luncheon in the Parish Hall. Contact Miranda at [email protected] or (425)277-6208 to RSVP.

Chính vì vậy mà chúng ta phải xin với Chúa ơn can đảm. Xin Chúa giúp chúng ta biết can đảm. Amen. (Lm. Giuse Đinh Tʳ t Quý) 3

~FORMATION~ Sharing God’s Word Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Today we hear Luke 21.5-19. We missed out on Luke 21.1-4: “He glanced up and saw the rich putting their offerings into the treasure, and also a poor widow putting in two copper coins. At that he said: ‘ I assure you, this poor widow has put in more than all the rest. They make contributions out of their surplus, but she from her want has given what she could not afford – every penny she had to live on.’ ” We continue with “While some people were speaking of how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings…” By the time that the Gospel of Luke read, that very temple had been destroyed, but the words of Jesus lived on. The first people to read Luke 21 might have thought that Jesus was coming back right away, just as we could think the same with the earth quakes in Italy and the Cubs winning the World Series, but Jesus reminds us that the important thing is to not be deceived or afraid, because the Holy Spirit, “(I myself) shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute.” In fact we will not be destroyed, but we might want to make sure that we read all of Luke chapter 21.

The Finance Council met on October 19, 2016. We discussed the Council's recent presentations at each Mass of the Parish Annual Report for the Pastoral Year July 2015 - June 2016, and we reviewed the Parish's financial situation for the first three months of the current Pastoral Year (July 2016 - September 2016). While our Parish generously came together as a community to fund the first of two phases to replace our aging roofs on the Church, we acknowledged the work that remains to be done to raise funds for the second phase of our Raise the Roof campaign. Father Jack pointed out that while we've seen an increase in the number of families registered with the Parish, the trend has been that "per family" Sunday Offerings have been decreasing, which challenges St. Anthony's ability to pay for the reduction of our mortgage, substantial repairs desperately needed for our aging buildings, and for recurring operating expenses. We were given a report by Miranda Harpel-McGaw, who will be working on the stewardship project to help create greater awareness among our Parish community of the financial challenges facing us and the opportunity that all of us have to come to the aid of St Anthony's and the many people our church serves.
