Back in the year 1490, two years before Columbus discovered America, two struggling artists, Albrecht Durer and Albert, his brother, agreed that one would work full-time to support them while the other studied. So Albrecht studied while Albert worked, with the understanding that when Albrecht became successful, he'd return the favor. After attaining enormous success Albrecht went back to honor their agreement, only to discover the terrible price his brother Albert had paid. By engaging in hard manual labor his fingers had become stiff and twisted and he could no longer paint. But instead of becoming jealous and bitter, Albert encouraged Albrecht and prayed for his continued success. In fact, one day while Albert was praying Albrecht quietly sketched his brother's gnarled, misshapen hands. Today his masterpiece, “The Praying Hands” tell a story of love, sacrifice, and the power of encouragement! The Bible says, "Encourage . . . and build up one another." Think of the people who've cheered you on as you struggled to reach life's milestones: the teacher who encouraged you to believe in yourself; the coach who pushed you to your limit to get you over the finish line; the boss who gave you the extra responsibility that led you to your promotion; the parents and grandparents who were there every step of the way; the entire chorus of encouragers who sustained you on your journey. Go ahead, drop them a note, send them an e-mail, surprise them with flowers. But don't stop there: Show your appreciation by passing it forward, by doing the same for those around you. Remember the praying hands? They were giving hands, working hands, loving hands! Who do they remind you of? Now it’s your turn to be that for someone else. CARTA DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO Queridos Parroquianos, Estimular... y construir uno con el otro. (1 tesa. 5:11) En el año 1490, dos años antes de que Colón descubriera América, dos artistas, Albrecht Durer y Albert, su hermano, acordaron que trabajarían a tiempo completo para apoyarse el uno al otro mientras que estudiaban. Así Albrecht estudió mientras trabajaba Albert, con el convenio de que cuando Albrecht se volviera exitoso, regresaría el favor. Después de alcanzar gran éxito Albrecht volvió para honrar su acuerdo, sólo para descubrir que su hermano Albert había pagado un precio terrible. A través del trabajo manual, duro sus dedos habían quedado tiesos y torcidos y ya no podía pintar. Pero en lugar de ponerse celoso y amargado, Albert animó a Albrecht y oró por su continuo éxito. ¿POR QUE LOS PADRINOS Y MADRINAS DE BAUTISMO TIENEN QUE ESTAR CASADOS POR LA IGLESIA? El ser padrino o madrina, no solo de Bautismo, sino de cualquier Sacramento, representa a la misma Iglesia. No es solo porque es alguien de la familia, conocido, o el que va a pagar la fiesta. Los padrinos y madrinas, representan en ese momento a nuestra Iglesia. Y si la representan lo deben hacer de manera completa. Tenemos muy seguido solicitudes para bautizar pidiendo que alguna pareja que están casados solo por la ley civil y no por la Iglesia, sean los padrinos. La respuesta es NO pueden, porque entonces NO están representando completamente a la Iglesia. No juzgamos por que si o por que no se han casado por la Iglesia, eso es algo personal, pero si están queriendo ser padrinos por la Iglesia es porque van a dar ejemplo de vida a su ahijado(a) viviendo su fe y recibiendo sus sacramentos. El ahijado o ahijada esta “viendo” en sus padrinos que el Sacramento del Matrimonio no es necesario, y la realidad es que necesitamos a Dios en nuestras vidas y dar ejemplo de su presencia en todo lo que hacemos. Si invitando a Dios al casarnos por la Iglesia, nos va como nos va, que pasa si no lo tenemos?

APOYE LA IGLESIA EN AMÉRICA LATINA SIENDO GENEROSO EN LA SEGUNDA COLECTA DOMINGO 24 DE ENERO. Los católicos en América Latina y el Caribe enfrentan muchos desafíos cuando se trata de compartir su fe. Sin embargo, siempre hay una luz que los alumbra y les da esperanza. En la Diócesis de San Miguel, en El Salvador, los jóvenes de la Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia se afrontan grandes riesgos debido a la violencia y la actividad de las pandillas. Por ello, la parroquia creó un programa de enriquecimiento y liderazgo para la juventud para responder a la necesidad de los jóvenes de contar con talentos de análisis crítico y una educación en valores. La parroquia espera ayudar a estos jóvenes que viven en zonas muy vulnerables y crear una cultura de solidaridad y de paz dentro de sus vecindarios. En la parroquia participa un grupo de 75 jóvenes adultos quienes se convertirán en líderes juveniles para propagar el mensaje del evangelio en sus vecindarios y poner fin al ciclo de violencia. ¡Muchas gracias por sus donaciones!

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has declared January "Poverty Awareness Month." In response, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is collaborating with other agencies throughout the Archdiocese to bring light to different aspects of poverty.
