In Memoriam PADRE JUNIPERO SERRA 1713 – 1784 FOUNDING FATHER OF CALIFORNIA HIS SANDALED FOOTPRINTS ALONG CALIFORNIA’S HISTORIC MISSION TRAIL (EL CAMINO REAL) AND THE 21 MISSIONS FOUNDED BY HIM AND BY THOSE WHO FOLLOWED IN HIS PATH, INTRODUCED CIVILIZATION TO THIS GLORIOUS LAND. TOGETHER THEY ARE CALIFORNIA’S MOST ENDURING AND HALLOWED MONUMENTS. No service too great No service too small For the love of God and man. -as printed on the Memorial Plaque in the St. Charles Borromeo Parish Center Courtyard which was moved from the Beverly Garland Hotel

On November 24, 1713, Junipero Serra was born in Majorca, Spain. He was baptized on the same day. Serra was welcomed into the Franciscan Convent in Palma when he was sixteen and spent the rest of his life as a loyal disciple of St. Francis (Friar Minors). There is a brief overview of his life accompanying these comments. In 2013 we commemorated the three hundredth anniversary of his birth. There is a statue of Serra in the National Hall of Statuary in Washington, DC. He is honored because of his contributions California and initiating the beautiful California Missions. Serra is depicted in the center medallion of our new Stained Glass windows honoring the saints and blessed of North America. We are honored to have the Beverly Garland statue of Junipero Serra in the Patio adjacent to the Social Center and Parish Center here at St. Charles. This statue, by local sculpture Enrique de la Vega, and commissioned by the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West, was dedicated and placed in a garden at the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn, July 16, 1978. The ceremony at the Beverly Garland was attended by about 300 persons, among those were Joseph Campanella (Master of Ceremonies), Father Moholy (the Franciscan postulator of Fr. Serra’s canonization cause in Rome), Enrique de la Vega (artist), ‘Iron Eyes’ Cody and hostess Beverly Garland. The statue remained there for many years, but when the Hotel was being remodeled, St. Charles Borromeo was approached about our willingness to receive this historic piece. Of course we accepted, and we are honored to have this Serra replica in our garden. Father Serra initiated the establishment of California’s 21 picturesque Missions, and he founded the first nine of that chain along the famous ‘El Camino Real.’ In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles he established the Mission Santa Buenaventura in 1782, which was the 9th Mission established by Fr. Serra and the older San Gabriel Mission in 1771, the 4th Mission established. Father Junipero Serra was declared ‘Blessed’ by Pope John Paul 11 in 1988. He will be declared among the saints in our Church at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, on September 23, 2015, when Pope Francis is visiting the United States. He will be the first saint in the Catholic Church to be canonized on American soil.

The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Greetings brothers and sisters, We wanted to take a moment and let you know that there will be a brief talk at all the Masses on the weekend of Sunday, October 11, for our 4th annual Our Lady Queen

of Palestine Feast Day Celebration.

The call to be of service is very close to our hearts as Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepluchre of Jerusalem. Being able to come together and engage in and raise awareness of the many needs of our brothers and sisters in both of our local communities, as well as throughout our world community, is a very important role of the EOHSJ. This year, our parish will again, along with fellow Knights and Ladies throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Dioceses of Orange County and San Diego, aim to raise awareness of some of the needs and challenges that face our brothers and sisters in the Christian communities in the Holy Land, specifically in speaking about the needs of the refugees and children with special needs that find housing at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Center in Amman, Jordan. Due to the high numbers of people with disabilities in Jordan and the limited numbers of specialized centers meeting their needs, the Roman Catholic Church established the Our Lady Queen of Peace Center. The Center strives to create common work opportunities between Jordanian Muslims and Christians with the goal of returning people with disabilities to their natural place in society. The project is founded on the principle that all human beings are dignified regardless of faith, race, gender, or ethnicity. Our Lady Queen of Peace Center not only provides medical and educational services to those with special needs. It also advocates on their behalf. It aims at changing the perceptions and attitudes of families and society regarding people with disabilities, thus leading them to an appreciation of the potential that these individuals possess. We aim to raise awareness as well as potentially some support for the children as well as the operations of the Center as they take in refugees at this time. Wynsdey and I will be present outside after all of the masses to speak with you about any questions you may have and to, very importantly, raise some awareness of the needs and the challenges that face our brothers and sisters in the Christian communities in the Holy Land. With love and blessings; Deacon Ryan & Lady Wynsdey Adams

Our Lady, Queen of Palestine, Pray for us and all the peoples of the Lands made sacred by your Son's Life, Death, and Resurrection. Amen. ARE YOU BEING CALLED TO BECOME A DEACON?
