PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Welcome all members, both old and new to the 2012 - 2013 swimming season. I hope that it will again be a successful one for the Sea Devils Swim Club and that all members continue to improve and enjoy the sport of swimming. The Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club is run by volunteers and continues to enjoy a very high level of competition. We have had swimmers compete at all Regional, NSW Metropolitan, State and National Championship events during the past three years. The Club continues to send a strong contingent to the representative meets which are highly prized honours for all swimmers. In addition to the regular fortnightly Friday Club Nights, the Club has its own Carnival each February. These club nights and the carnival can only occur with the assistance of all parents. Please get involved and assist with Club activities whenever you can and if possible stay for a BBQ after some Club nights. We Cater for all swimmers from as young as 5 to adult or Open Age, able body to "multiclass" (swimmers with disability). Whether you can swim 15M or 1,500M, Swim Club is about learning and practicing competition level swimming whilst having fun at the same time. I will endeavour to assist the kids to race within the rules of swimming and offer guidance to those who need it and then to pass this information onto the coaches. I encourage all families to come along and support their children in participation in our Swim Club. Who knows, we may produce another Olympian like our head coach. I look forward to another great year and am sure that our swimmers will enjoy themselves, enjoy the competition and make many new friends but more importantly have fun in the sport of swimming. I would like to acknowledge and thank our sponsors for their generous support. Good luck everyone.

Mark Smith President

SANS SOUCI SWIM CLUB Welcome to Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club for 2012 -2013 season. We are a family friendly club, run by volunteers, which aims to provide a safe and supportive environment where all swimmers, regardless of ability, are encouraged to reach their full potential. We are a not-for-profit organisation which is run under our Constitution and by-laws. We were formed in 2009 by some very dedicated parents and coaches. We have regular meetings which are open to everyone. If you have any ideas, please come along and share them with the committee. We are affiliated with Metropolitan South East (Metsea).

PARENTAL SUPPORT The running of carnivals, club and our time trial nights takes a lot of organisation. Your support and assistance in the running of these events is needed and greatly appreciated. If you can help out on club nights by timekeeping or marshalling please volunteer. We've all heard it before "MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK' - this is so true - if you want a fast night at the pool we must have your help. The Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club is a very competitive club and one of the strongest in the Region. It has grown this way because of the tireless work and support of our parents. Please keep up this great work - the club needs you.

FRIDAY SWIM CLUB NIGHT Sans Souci Sea Devils conducts Friday Swim Club Night every fortnight commencing at 6pm, from October through to March. We do stop during the Christmas/January holidays. Please note that no child can be left unattended at the pool on Friday Club Night evenings. Swim Club is fun but requires parental supervision. No child may enter the pool for Friday Club Night, unless accompanied by an adult (over 18 years). Parents are required to assist with the running of events, particularly timekeeping. No experience is necessary and full training will be provided, and you will be able to gain knowledge from our older club members. Please remember that the children only compete against their own "personal best" (PB) times. They are here to enjoy themselves and their sport and hopefully improve their swimming. Please support them in their chosen sport by encouraging them and becoming involved in the Club. Events are programmed each fortnight as per the timetable. However, this is a guide, only, and may be altered at the discretion of the Race Official when and where necessary. We try to run our Friday Night Club night like an actual carnival. This way the children learn what to do when they are going to a swimming carnival. The majority of events are Point score events, with Championship events held at the end of the summer season.

ENTERING EVENTS •

All entries must be received by the "Friday Night Race Co-Ordinator/Secretary" by 5.30pm on Friday night of club.

Entries can be emailed to our club email address by Thursday 5pm (the day before).

Note, swimmers training that day should register BEFORE they start training,

It is the swimmer's responsibility to ensure that they have correctly entered an event.

Swimmers may withdraw from an event without penalty. If the race has already commenced, withdrawals must be advised to the Marshaller.

A swimmer can enter a maximum of 3 swims per Club night.

MARSHALLING The Marshall will call swimmers to the marshalling area (usually near the start blocks) prior to each event. It is the swimmer's responsibility to arrive at the marshalling area when events are called. Those members arriving after their events have been marshalled may be ineligible to compete. Exceptions will be made at the discretion of the Marshall. The Marshall will place the children in their races and they will be directed where to sit. So as to allow a smooth procedure in the marshalling area, it is essential that swimmers wait patiently and quietly. Swimmers who disrupt the marshalling procedures may be asked to leave the area and we ask for your total support in ensuring this occurs. Unless otherwise notified, all swims will be scratch events (swimmers all start together at the same time), with heats and lanes allocated according to previous best times.

STARTING The Starter will call the Swimmers onto the blocks, or into the water for backstroke races, by whistle, and all races will be started by buzzer, electronic hooter or whistle. Only the Referee on the night can disqualify a swimmer at their discretion. We ask you to please read the following instructions on the starting and swimming of races and to become familiar with racing procedures. 1.

At the sound of the Referee's whistle, competitors must step up to the back of the starting block (or in backstroke or medley relays, to enter the water, and a second long whistle to bring swimmers to the starting position).

2. At the command “take your marks”, Competitors take up their starting positions and remain stationary. 3. When all Competitors are stationary, the Starter will give the starting signal by pistol, hooter or whistle. 4. The Club will function under the “Two Start Rule” for 25m races and the “One Start Rule” for all races 50m and greater. A disqualified swimmer may still swim in the race, their time and points will not be recorded but their swim will still enable them to qualify for Championship events. 5. All Swimmers must remain in the water in their lanes until the Referee signals them.

Members are promoted to longer distances according to their ability to swim the various distances within a specified time. If a swimmer is eligible to swim the next distance but decides to stay at the same distance a maximum of only one point will be awarded for that swim. When the qualifying times are achieved, swimmers will automatically be promoted to the next distance in that stroke up 100M. •

15m swimmers will not be promoted unless they achieve qualifying times using correct stroke and without any support (swimmer or bubble).

A Swimmer who has qualified to swim in 100m events SHOULD swim the 100m events. Longer distances are optional.

Teams consist of four (4) swimmers of any age, sex or ability and each swimmer is required to swim 50m. Relays will be handicapped events and children who swim the 25m freestyle event may use flippers. Teams will be advised of their handicap after marshalling is completed. There will be no points allocation for these events. They are strictly fun events and as such are not included in the maximum number of swims allowed each Club night.

LONGER DISTANCE TIME TRIALS These will be held throughout the summer season at the discretion of the committee. If you would like an “official” long distance time, please contact the committee.

RECORDS Sans Souci Sea Devils Club does not hold any records at the moment as the club has not been established too long. The committee is looking at this in the future.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT A Championship night is conducted at the end of the season. This season, Club Championship night will be held on 22 March 2013. Entries for this meet close the Friday night prior to the championship night. This is a separate night from our normal “Friday Club Night”. You are racing against other children in your age group and points are accumulated on where you finish in your race, not if you do a PB. Eligibility for championship events: •

Members must compete in at least 5point score meets

Members must be the age specified for the events as at the 22 March 2013.

Senior and Junior Club Champion for both boys and girls, is conducted on a 4,3,2,1 point score basis on events conducted on championship night.

SWIMMING CARNIVALS The Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club will compete in a variety of Swimming Carnivals throughout the Metropolitan South East Region (Metsea) and beyond. You are not restricted on where you swim. These carnivals are a great way to see your child improving through competition and we ask that you support these carnivals. Details of these events will be provided throughout the season. Notices of some carnivals will be handed out by the coaches. These are what we call club targeted meets and a coach will attend. Notices will also be placed in our Notice Board and on our Website. However, for other carnivals that you think your child might be interested in, they are all noted on the Swimming NSW website under “Calendar”. As our Race secretary submits the entries for carnivals you will either need to complete entry cards or enter via our website to confirm your attendance at the meet. Please be aware that we must have our entries and payments in by the due date specified. No late entries will be accepted. More carnival entry information can be found on our website. Further information can be found on Page 15 of this booklet. Metsea also hold regular carnivals: Development Carnivals Long Distance Carnivals Summer Championships Winter Championships When we go to SOPAC at Homebush, we like to sit in Section 113 on the western side of the pool. However, if this area is full we won’t be too far away, so look out for us.

CLUB CARNIVAL Sans Souci Sea Devils holds a carnival during in February each year. Next year our carnival is on 23rd February 2013. The carnival is open to all ages. We will need your support so please give your time to assist in preparing for, and running our carnival. More information will become available as the date gets closer.

BEING SELECTED FOR A RELAY At the NSW State Age Championships held in January, and other selected meets throughout the year, the Coaches select swimmers to swim in relay teams representing Sans Souci Sea Devils. You do not need to have a qualifying time to be selected onto one of the Club’s relay teams, however, if you are notified that you have been selected for a relay team and you know that you will not be able to compete at that meet, you must notify the Coaches immediately, so another person has the opportunity to be selected.

FROM THE RACE SECRETARY – HOW TO ENTER A CARNIVAL Welcome to the Summer Season. Summer is a very busy season, so to enable it to run as smoothly as possible, your co-operation with the following would be appreciated. Meet Programs will be available from the club website and/or NSW Swimming. Closing dates for entries must be adhered to as to allow the entire club entries to be with the host club by their due date. CHECK THE CLUB WEBSITE FOR CLUB CLOSING DATES. Do not go off the date on the meet programme. NO EXTENSIONS OF CLOSING TIME can be given. Unless otherwise listed on the Upcoming Meets page, entries close two weeks prior to the closing date listed on the meet programme, except for meets which list a "maximum entries" condition. In this case, entries close 4 weeks prior to the listed closing date to maximise the chance of entries being accepted. Please be considerate in meeting these cut offs, as compiling the entries is a mammoth task and our Race Secretary works full time and have families to look after. Individual entries must not be forwarded directly to the host club unless prior approval has been obtained from the President or Race Secretary only, not the Coaches. All entries for meets other than Metro, State and National Championships (and the occasional meets that are marked “enter online”), must be submitted through the club. We need this to be adhered to so that we can complete a summary sheet and issue only one cheque to cover all our competitors. Lots of individual entries equals lots of work for the host Race Secretary and the Treasurer. Club entries also enable us to monitor attendance at meets and seek coach attendance where appropriate. You only need to pay the $2 Coaches Fee when it is a club targeted meet. You are welcome to attend any meets as listed on our website or on the Swimming NSW website. Remember to enter as soon as possible, as carnivals fill up weeks in advance and we do not want you to miss out.

ENTERING A CARNIVAL VIA SSSD WEBSITE http://www.sssd.nswswimming.com.au Go to Meet entry form and follow the prompts. Pay by EFT and you will receive a confirmation back from your entry. Please use the following bank account: Account Name: Sans Souci Sea Devils RACE BSB: 012-315 Account Number 183 892 514 If the carnival is not listed on our website under the heading Name of Meet, could you please send an email to [email protected] confirming your payment into the club RACE bank account and what carnival you have paid for. This also applies if you enter multiple carnivals with only 1 payment to the club RACE bank account.

ENTERING A CARNIVAL VIA MANUAL ENTIRES Entry cards are available from the club box which is kept at the Front Desk of Sans Souci Leisure Centre. •

All cards must be placed in the SSSD Entry Box (located next to the notice board) in an envelope with your name, the meet name, and the amount enclosed, clearly labelled on the envelope. You must include correct cash or cheque. You can also pay via EFT and place the receipt in with the card.

Cheques must be made out to Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club, NOT the host club.

Any cards which are incorrect or incomplete will be returned so PLEASE TAKE CARE, particularly with event numbers, date of birth and ID number. Ask any of our committee members for assistance if you are unsure how to fill them out correctly.

You must put your registration number on the entry cards or they MAY not be accepted by the Race Secretary and will be returned.

HOW TO COMPLETE AN ENTRY CARD

RULES FOR COMPETITION SWIMMERS AT CARNIVALS 1.

Once your event has been called or displayed on the event board you are to move to the Marshalling area where your name will be checked off and then you will be handed your official entry card and allocated a lane. You must then sit in the designated area and only move when instructed by the Marshall.

2. Whilst the swimmers from the previous heat are clearing the water step forward and stand behind the starting block of your lane. 3. When competitors have placed themselves behind their block the starter will announce the event, eg. Heat 1 - 10 years and under 50 metres freestyle. 4. The referee or starter will then give a long whistle to signal competitors to take their position on the back of the starting block or in the water for backstroke or when medley relays are being swum. 5. The starter will give the precautionary command "Take your marks" and competitors will immediately take up their starting positions at the front of the blocks, or their starting position for backstroke. They must then remain stationary. 6. When all competitors are stationary the starter will sound the buzzer. 7. When using the one start rule, any swimmer starting before the starting signal has been given, shall be disqualified. If the starting signal sounds before the disqualification is declared, the race shall continue and the swimmer or swimmers shall be disqualified upon completion of the race. If the disqualification is declared before the starting signal, the signal shall not be given, but the remaining swimmers shall be called back, be reminded by the starter of the penalties, and start again. 8. Competitors must finish in the lane in which they start and will remain in the water in their lanes at the finish of the event. Competitors may only leave the water once they have received instructions from the referee. Competitors are only to leave the water by the side of the pool not the end. 9. In an individual medley the order of strokes is Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle. In Medley relays events the order shall be Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly then Freestyle. 10. In events of 800m and 1500m lap counters will be displayed to advise competitors of the remaining laps to be completed. A whistle will be blown to signal to competitors when they have two laps and 5 metres to be swum for completion of the event.
