Life Membership Vigilance and Service. These 2 words have been the touchstones of surf life saving in Australia from the earliest days of the Surf Life Saving movement in Australia. We would like to acknowledge our life members who this year were also acknowledged by Far North Coast Branch and SLS NSW for their substantial service to life saving over many years and presented with Life Membership. Many of our newer members will know Darcy Morrow, as Darcy still patrols, competes, trains and is a branch assessor. Wilson Cregan has been a loyal member of the Club over many years also, though in recent years his focus has been on branch administration and the Jet Rescue Boat Service. Elton Cummings Elton Cummings joined Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore SLSC in 1972. Elton has been actively involved in surf lifesaving administration at a Branch level and also with the Jet Rescue Boat Service, which was originally formed by Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore SLSC, and SurfCom in recent years. For services to SLS NSW, Elton was awarded Life Membership by our State Council this year also. Wilson Cregan Wilson joined the Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore Surf Life Saving Club during the 1962-1963 Season. He gained his Bronze Medallion with the Club in December 1962. Since that time Wilson was an active member of the Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore Surf Life Saving Club until the 1998-1999 Season (completing 36 seasons as a lifesaver). He participated in the training of new lifesavers by gaining his instructors certificate in 1972. Over the years Wilson has proved himself to be a fine lifesaver, competitor and administrator taking on various positions at a Club, Branch, State and most recently Support Service level. Today Wilson is actively involved in the Ballina Jet Rescue Boat and he remains one of the most experienced administrators in the Far North Coast Branch. Wilson served as Branch President for 11 seasons, and was this year re-appointed Branch President for the 2010/11 season. Wilson is the 3rd longest serving Branch President behind other Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore SLSC stalwarts, Pop Denison and Jim Flanagan. Darcy Morrow Darcy Morrow first joined Surf Life Saving at the age of 12 completing nippers at the Sawtell Surf Life Saving Club on the New South Wales Mid North Coast. In January 1965 he stepped up into the senior ranks, qualifying under the rules of Surf Life Saving Australia to obtain his Bronze Medallion. Later that year, Darcy transferred his membership to the Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore SLSC where over the years he became a prominent competitor and surf lifesaver. Since 1965 and up until this present day (equalling 44 years), Darcy has remained a proficient lifesaver within the Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore Surf Life Saving Club and the Far North Coast Branch, volunteering hundred of hours on patrol. His dedication, skill and knowledge are evidence to the fact that 39 of those years had been served as a patrol captain, including six of those years as Club Captain of his Club. Darcy to this day remains one of the most senior, most experienced patrolling members in the Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore Surf Life Saving Club and indeed the Far North Coast Branch. Darcy has served Far North Coast Branch as an official, assessor and trainer for over 30 years. To all gentlemen – congratulations.

President s Report

Ballina Lighthouse and Lismore Surf Life Saving Club

President s Report I'm sitting here on the afternoon of Anzac Day, reflecting on the special relation our club has to the Anzac Day traditions and those young men who had spent their pre-war years patrolling Lighthouse Beach to provide a safe beach experience for the public. At this morning's Dawn Service there were quite a few Surf Club members in the crowd and I wonder if their thoughts moved in that direction also. This year has been very challenging for our Club, with the first issue to be resolved being where we needed to patrol this season. The extreme weather event we experienced in late May placed considerable pressure on the Committee to quickly develop a contingency plan for patrolling activities. After considerable discussion, we determined that we could not take the risk that the gravel beach would return enough sand to allow us to effectively patrol the beach over the summer. With the Branch Director of Lifesaving, I held discussions with Ballina Shire Council and Surf Life Saving NSW resulting in the Club's primary patrolling area being moved back to our original home beach of Lighthouse Beach. I am the first to accept that this was not without challenges either, though through the support of Ballina Shire Council and Woollam Constructions, we were able to establish effective patrolling facilities. I would stress that the facilities are effective, not desirable and we continue to battle for appropriate clubhouse facilities for our members through Ballina Shire Council, State and Federal Government agencies. We understand the good humour that our nippers particularly have accepted our conditions, though I am also conscious this is not sustainable. We have notified the Branch we cannot host the Branch Junior and Senior Championships for 2011 as the facilities we have are stretched to accommodate our nipper mornings already. At the time of writing this report, the development application has been preliminarily assessed by the Joint Regional Planning Panel, and Ballina Shire Council is responding to planning issues identified in the preliminary assessment. We have received

strong verbal support, particularly from Mayor Phillip Silver and Federal MP for Page, Janelle Saffin of the priority that new clubhouse facilities should be given. My thanks to the Building Committee of Andrew Dougherty, Craig Nowlan, Gary Murphy, Ron Shepherd and Joe Keane for their work and guidance in helping us move the club building project forward. The 2478 postcode featured tragically in 2 separate drowning events this season. The first drowning occurred outside the flagged area of Lighthouse Beach on Boxing Day. At the time of writing, we are still awaiting the final report into the incident. A little over 3 weeks later, a second (multiple) drowning occurred at South Ballina beach when a family went for a quiet early evening swim. The second event captured considerable national and international media attention as the three children of Joseph and Carole Sherry witnessed the tragedy on the unpatrolled beach. At the time of the first drowning, I wrote to members reflecting that the base case at any location is an unpatrolled beach. Our members chose to contribute positively to our community by making a dangerous situation less dangerous by patrolling our local beaches. I want to thank all members for the responsibility they accept in contributing to our patrolling base. A success of the season has been the strong engagement by our junior activity community, and the view from the Lighthouse lookout carpark of nippers in full swing is magnificent. I would like to thank the JAC Chairperson Damon Meaney and his committee for the hours they have invested in the youngest members of the Club over the past season. Similarly, to the age managers for their willingness to give up their time to give kids in our local area the opportunity to develop essential life skills in regard to surf safety and awareness.

I would like to take a moment to highlight and note my thanks to the value Andrew has brought to our club, with his involvement through nippers, the Building Committee and most recently stepping into the Club Captain role after Brent Manieri moved to Sydney to take up a role with Surf Lifesaving NSW.

It is also evident in the younger members “hanging out”, despite no facilities, around the surf club precinct and is particularly evident in the 15-18 year groups. I have recently had the experience of completing a swap with one younger member and then found him on the substituted patrol with me as “he still wanted to do his patrol” also. Of all our patrolling members; these members, together with the 13-15 age groups really are the future of our Club and their input into our strategic plan review (due for the start of next season), is also critical. We had identified last season the need for structured activities for our members, and considered some beach activities for all members would assist. This season saw a return to regular Sunday competition for our members, with Andrew Dougherty establishing a Sunday morning handicap swim. The consistency of numbers has illustrated that our members are keen to take part in these type of organised activities, and I wish to record my thanks to Andrew for his enthusiasm to have this part of our club calendar.

Joe Keane remains heavily involved at a branch level as Director of Life Saving and I congratulate him for taking on this executive position in the branch. To Rod Balkin and Darcy Morrow, I would also like to convey my thanks for the work undertaken outside the club boundary through their involvement as branch assessors. All of these engagements raise our profile within the Branch. Whilst members are aware of the presence of a Club Committee, the extent of the time the Committee Members spend of their own time in the interests of the club is substantial. To our committee of Sharon Balkin, Rob McArthur, Joe Keane, Andrew Dougherty (Brent Manieri), Rod Balkin, Damon Meaney, Darcy Morrow, Damon Jones, Steve McNabb, Brian Crouch, Angela Jones, Ron Shepherd, Warren Lusted and Damian McDonald – my substantial thanks for the manner that you approach the role.

Treasurer s Report

This season has been an important one for the Club in that we took a very large step toward recognising the corporate structure of the Club through our financial reporting. Our auditor has identified this as a positive initiative and it is pleasing that the Junior Activities Committee ( JAC) Executive recognised that the move does not compromise its capacity to acquire equipment as and when it is required. Whilst bank accounts have been amalgamated, we are still able to report financial performance of sections of the Club individually. The Club has moved to electronic payment options where available. Whilst the technology has existed for some time, by activating this option it has allowed us to ensure our creditors are paid within trading terms more easily and without the need to chase signatories around town. The Club financial position continues to steadily build through prudent management. I would like to make special note of the work Jane Murphy has undertaken in managing the JAC accounts in recent seasons, and her support in the amalgamation of bank accounts – it has certainly made my job easier. Secretary s Report Congratulations to all of our members for your contribution this season – which was not without its challenges. From our volunteer lifesavers to those who repair equipment, stock the first aid kits, organise the Sunday morning BBQ, co-ordinate junior activities, assist with water safety duties, officiate at carnivals, collect at our Annual Doorknock or just help out when needed – thank you. We enjoy a strong membership base with almost 500 members. Our junior members (aged between 5 years and 13 years) represent 40% of our total membership. I believe this confirms that the future of surf lifesaving, and our club, is bright. I must acknowledge Helen Meaney's valuable contribution with respect to the Junior Activities Committee ( JAC) memberships. The processing of memberships is a massive job, and Helen's work in the role of JAC Registrar has been appreciated. Membership development is an important facet of modern surf lifesaving. A group of our Under 13 and Under 14 juniors capably represented our Club at the Branch Member Development Camp held in January. Four members aged 15 to 18 enjoyed the Junior Leadership Development Camp at Fingal, held in April. These development initiatives, supported by the Far North Coast Branch, provide valuable opportunities for our younger members and identify possible future leaders. Through a variety of physical activities focusing on teamwork, communication and planning, participants gain valuable skills and benefit their lifesaving careers. At a national level, Joe Keane was one of only a handful of recipients of the 2009 Sir Adrian Curlewis Scholarship. The Scholarship, running over a twelve month period, is awarded to members who have been identified by their states as the leaders of the future. Club Captain Andrew Dougherty was successfully nominated to attend the 2010 SLSA Leaders' Conference in June 2010. The National Conference provides an opportunity for 20 participants to undertake a high-level leadership development program. During the season, communication to members was enhanced through electronic newsletters and our updated web site generated positive feedback from members. Regular communication is certainly made easier (and more cost effective) with modern technology. Our partnership with Paradise FM radio continued with our Patrol Captains again crossing live to Paradise FM radio each Saturday morning for an up-to-date beach report on conditions. Thanks to

Sandra Jackson and the Paradise FM Crew for their continued support. In conjunction with sponsorship support, the Club was successful in receiving grant monies through the Telstra Assistance Fund and Dept. of Sport and Recreation Grant Programs for rescue gear, patrol hats and uniforms. Thanks to Peter Carmont from the Professionals Real Estate Ballina for funding the purchase of new patrol rash shirts for our IRB drivers and crew. A highlight was the purchase of a new ATV early in the season, made possible largely through a generous donation by the Ballina Lions Club. The funds were the proceeds from the 2009 Ballina Lions Club FunRun event. Our heartfelt thanks to John Grant, Ken Leo and all the Ballina Lions Club members for their support. The Westpac Branches at Lismore and Ballina joined forces to fund the major renovation of our patrol shelter. The Lismore Branch staff also worked with us to fundraise over $400 for Boardies Day in November. Decked out in the familiar red and yellow, the Westpac Lismore Branch hosted a fabulous display promoting the work our club and volunteers do. It certainly inspired the Westpac customers to give generously. Sincere thanks to all our sponsors and supporters. Your generosity ensures our volunteer surf lifesavers are equipped with the most up-to-date skills and training, and given access to the best gear and equipment. Each annual report time it is difficult to summarise the myriad of events, skills and talents of all our members into one publication. I guess you could say Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore SLSC is many things. A business - looking after the bottom line to support our volunteer lifesavers, an educator – teaching surf safety to our juniors and first aid and rescue skills to our volunteer lifesavers so they can provide a community service, a sporting club – promoting fitness and providing an opportunity for all our members to train and compete at all levels, the source – of many long lasting friendships, a big family – where a group of people with a common interest can volunteer their time and skills for the benefit of Ballina Shire residents and visitors. Sharon Balkin

Captain s Report It was halfway during the season that I stepped into the Club Captains role after the departure of Brent Manieri to Sydney. My thanks to Brent for doing a great job for the Club as captain and for his service over many years. Brent has taken a role with Surf Lifesaving NSW so it will not be the last we hear of him. This season our volunteer surf lifesavers rescued 30 people in distress, administered first aid on 61 occasions and carried out 833 preventative actions. Compared with the previous season's statistics, we performed less rescues (effective prevention) and slightly less preventative actions – mainly due to more favourable conditions this season - while first aid cases increased significantly (largely due to the rise in marine sting injuries). We had a major move back to Lighthouse Beach which took a lot of time and effort from a number of members and the assistance of sponsors Woollam Construction. I believe the move has been welcomed by the Ballina community and the service provided gratefully acknowledged. Lighthouse Beach can be challenging at the best of times and the dangers posed by the surf were no more apparent than with the tragic drowning(s) at Lighthouse and South Ballina beach this season. Our deepest condolences go to the families involved on their tragic loss. We also had the loss of one our own – Saxon Bird – at the Australian Titles and our hearts go out to his family and club mates. I would like to acknowledge the work of Rod Balkin as Chief Instructor ( along with our other assessors ) and Sharon Balkin as Secretary. Their work in training and administration are the backbone of the Club and it is only when it is carried out effectively that a Club can offer a proper service to the community. Their roles extend not just during the patrolling season but are a year round commitment. Our members demonstrated extensive knowledge and skill in the assistance offered to the Ballina Community in all manner of situations. To these exceptional individuals, thank you for the professional manner in which you conducted yourselves. Your efforts are

valued by your Club and community. I am proud to submit the patrol and rescue statistics for the 2009 / 2010 season later in this report. To all our Patrol Captains – your efforts during the season are essential for the Club to function and you have provided an example to all members on the standards required to ensure the safety of the public. I must thank the Club's Management Committee for their leadership and guidance which in turn ensures our Club continues to move forward. The proposed new club house plans are taking shape and when finalised will give the Club a new momentum and further level of interest and support. I would also acknowledge the assistance of the many Support Operations that contributed to the high level of service we provided this season. To Joe Keane in his role of Director of lifesaving (FNC), the Ballina Jet Rescue Boat, Lifeguards and Surfcom volunteers – thank you for your assistance during the season. We have started a couple of initiatives this season with a weekly surf swim (well done Eoin Johnston for taking out the point-score) and Junior training Tuesday & Thursday afternoons continued to develop with the assistance of Will Keane. The junior ranks competed at a number of carnivals this season and achieved a high level of participation due largely to the efforts of Damon & Helen Meaney. Senior competition this year has not been as serious but there will be some initiatives in 2010 /2011 to encourage more participation. As we end the season all members should be thinking about maintaining a level of fitness during winter and aiming for an even more successful 2010 / 2011 season. Finally, most of all, I wish to acknowledge all our members for contributing towards the most vital volunteer organisation in Australia. It is great to see in Ballina we have a number of families that have joined as a group and participate at both junior and senior level – the work you do is important and an example to others - thank you! Yours in lifesaving Andrew Dougherty

Our members demonstrated extensive knowledge and skill in the assistance offered to the Ballina Community in all manner of situations.

Chief Training Officer Congratulations to those new and existing members who successfully achieved a number of education awards across many disciplines in Season 2009-2010. Training and education in surf lifesaving is now a twelve months a year activity often resulting in a year round commitment to surf lifesaving by our volunteer lifesavers. I'd like to acknowledge the Club's small band of current qualified trainers and assessors, Joe Keane, Darcy Morrow and Steve McNabb for their continued commitment. In addition to their patrol duties, these members dedicate many hours to training and assessing ( both at our beach and other Branch clubs ). Thanks also to the assessors from other clubs, particularly Larry Platt and the Lennox Head Team and Geoff Horsey from Evans Head, who assist us with assessments and proficiencies when required. The contribution made by Brian Lewis, FNC Branch Director of Education, should also be recognised. Brian's guidance ( and patience ) with respect to the computer / paperwork component, now an even bigger part of training, is appreciated. Members Damian McDonald, Carl Virtue, Angela Jones, Paul Shepherd and Damon Jones have all got involved in training IRB and / or Bronze Awards over the past twelve months. Each is well on the way to achieving their trainer qualifications. Within the Junior Activities area, the age managers have utilised the SLSA Junior Development Resource Kit to ensure consistency in the delivery of surf education for our nippers. Tracey Smith has co-ordinated this with the Age Managers, resulting in a large contingent of juniors achieving the relevant Surf Smart, Surf Safe and Surf Play Awards. Each of the Age Managers certainly plays an important role in surf education for our younger members. A warm welcome to our newest patrolling members - those who have gained their Bronze Medallion and/or Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) during the season. From a trainer's perspective, it is rewarding to see candidates' skill and confidence gain momentum over the several weeks of training, as well as the camaraderie that develops amongst each group. Special mention to our Club Treasurer, Rob McArthur, who capably gained his bronze medallion in December – well done Rob! The Bronze / SRC training provides a broad range of knowledge and establishes the required competency levels. An important dimension is what our new lifesavers can learn from our experienced members on the beach. The best form of education is practice and the knowledge shared by our longer serving members is a vital resource. On a personal note, thanks to my Season 2009-2010 Patrol Team of Steve McNabb, Steve Brown, Angela Jones, Georgia Linton, Amelia Perris, Sarah Jones, Nathan Stelzer and Rhys Balkin for your commitment to our Club and surf lifesaving during the season. I think it is fair to say we had a great mix of age and youthful enthusiasm! Rod Balkin.

Surf Rower s Report

This season has been a lean one with no competing crews.

Whilst no crews competing, we did have the opportunity to share a love of surf rowing with a new group -the women's' crew of Debbie Pickering, Jackie Hinrichsen, Jo McIntosh, Michelle Bourke, Kate Bourne, Helen Kirk and Dale Parker . Each crew member was a novice to begin with, however, each learnt to row in every position in the boat - a feat which is not achieved by many male crews. I would like to thank the girls for their efforts and good humour whilst learning to row. Geoff Marshall and myself coached this team. A male crew of Graeme Gordon, Nathan Gordon, Dean French, James Rix, Brad Lyons, Tim French started training, with the intent of competing at carnivals, though through injury and other circumstances did not continue. We had the benefit of a social crew that rowed for fun – thanks to John Harvey, David Dirou, Shon Trim, Peter Rodziewicz, Geoff Marshall and Darcy Morrow. I would like to thank our sponsors for their ongoing support. National Foods, who have their Dare Iced Coffee logo featured on our newest boat and Nestle who sponsored our competition tent. I'd also like to acknowledge support from Ballina Car Wash, Singhs Tyre & Mechanical, Trade Angle (Shon Trim) & Caltex Australia. The Senior Australian Carnival at Kurrawa was cancelled due to the cyclonic sea conditions – I think this is a first. Also, the Branch Championships at Lennox Head was postponed due to big seas. A strong lesson that whilst we can compete in the ocean, we cannot control the conditions. Thanks to my wife Helen and Geoff Marshall for their friendship & support. A special mention to the women's' crew also for reminding us that it is not all about competition. Lastly, my thanks to the Committee for their support.

First Aid Report This year the Club moved it main first aid functions from Shelly Beach to Lighthouse Beach where we have a temporary first aid room in use while a new club house is being planned and built. New first aid facilities are eagerly awaited! The Club has invested some thousands of dollars in first aid supplies and equipment. The Club participated in the “Guidelines for Safer Surf Clubs” initiative rolled out by Surf Life Saving Australia. Members were invited to participate in audits and made aware of a range of health and safety policies and codes for members involved in surf lifesaving. . Health and safety always comes first and a commitment to wellbeing is the responsibility of all members. The newest item of equipment the Club has purchased is a RES-Q-Vac hand suction pump introduced through the new ARTC course. The suction pump is now available and is located with the oxy viva. A thorough audit of the first aid equipment has been completed at the end of the season, ready for winter training and the new season. Accurate recording of first aid incidents in the Patrol and Incident Logs confirms supplies used and assists with restocking. Well done to all our Season 2009-2010 members. Damian McDonald

IRB Report Thanks to all our IRB Drivers and Crewpersons for their work over the season. Congratulations also to those members who trained during last winter and received their IRB Driver and/or Crew qualifications and were able to take on these roles actively during the season. The equipment has performed well and is currently in for major services prior to the start of winter 2010 training. Just a reminder that this rescue equipment is the most expensive life saving gear on the books. It should also be operated in accordance with the IRB Code of Conduct to ensure the safety of members and the public. Whilst storage space is at a premium in the sheds, please remember not to use the IRB hulls as orange storage containers. This can cause major damage (and expense) to the hull. For those members with an interest in gaining their IRB qualifications, don't hesitate to contact Rod Balkin or myself for further information. The more drivers and crew persons we have, the more patrol groups we can field on the roster. Steve McNabb / Damon Jones

Junior s Report

This season has again been one full of enthusiasm and fun. Moving to Lighthouse Beach brought its own challenges but with almost 200 nippers and great weather the juniors were able to spend many Sundays developing their surf confidence and board skills. When surf conditions were not favourable, Shaws Bay provided a great alternative. The Club purchased a number of new boards this season which has enabled more children greater access to boards and paddling skills practice. A big thank you to our Age Managers - Tracey , Neil, Craig, Troy, Andrew, Kim, Glen, Justine, Brad, Anne , Dan and Kate, Kellie & Stephen and to all the other wonderful parents who stepped in to help out whenever asked. Our Club was well represented at carnivals this season, with many medals brought home across all age groups. It was great to see our Nippers attempt and complete some events for the very first time. It soon became a unwritten rule that the Age Manager would buy an ice cream for each first time event completed, needless to say they were out of pocket quite a few dollars this year. A great incentive which was taken in good fun by everyone. Thanks again to our Coach Will Keane for the time, knowledge and skills passed, particularly with respect to board and surf skills training. The number of Nippers turning up each Tuesday & Thursday to Will's training sessions illustrates how valuable this training is. Will's time, together with the efforts of those parents who assist Will each week, is greatly appreciated. Thank you to the those parents who stepped up and took on an active role this year, everything from water safety and administration, to our Sunday Sauage Sizzle and end of season Wet N Wild Trip. Without this active participation we would not be able to provide Nipper Activities. A special thanks to Al Petty, Gary Murphy , Leanne Truman, Jane Murphy, Angela Dyer, Helen Meaney, Kim Green, Stan Brown, Kerrilee McIntyre, Matt Smith, Julie Jones, Karen & Jason Flanagan, and every parent who helped, many thanks to you all. Our recent Presentation Day and Meeting to appoint JAC positions for next season was very positive, with a number of willing parents offering their services. I encourage each parent/carer to become actively involved to ensure the continued success of our nipper program and the continued development of the future surf lifesavers of our Club.

Our Club was well represented at carnivals this season, with many medals brought home across all age groups.
