Travelling through the region multiple times a year I have found myself feasting on sumptuous foods in restaurants that have famous chef’s names on the door and taken in the view from the Skyview bar in the Burj Al Arab while enjoying afternoon tea. I was in Dubai in May for a week and got the chance to try the Heritage Dubai Safari, a great way to learn more about the culture of this land. I also got the chance to stay in October at the amazing Atlantis The Palm, an unforgettable experience. There is always something new to do, try, taste, see, encounter or experience in Dubai. To visit Dubai is to float through a fantastically vibrant social atmosphere. Offering up everything from indoor snowboarding to phenomenal music festivals to world-class hotels, I am never let down by what the UAE has on offer. You can never be bored in a city that has more activities, events, services and facilities than you could get around to enjoying in one lifetime. The quality, luxuriousness and attention to detail makes it a unforgettable place to explore. It will colour your view of the world too, and when return home or continue your travels you’ll be constantly comparing everything with what you can get in the UAE! Let us sculpt your next stop in the region whether you’re looking for a romantic Bedouin dinner in the desert, to take the family indoor skiing while the heat rises outside or simply to soak up the culture of these expanding cities. Contact us now and let us give you your ultimate travelling experience on any budget. Halina Kubica, Managing Director Cover image: Atlantis The Palm

We at Greece and Mediterranean Travel Centre have a long lasting relationship with the most watched Australian travel show – Getaway. Since 2004 we have been arranging trips for the cast and crew to many of our favourite destinations. Getaway has put their trust in us to arrange their trips and recommended the magnificent places that Australians should visit. Now you can experience these amazing places for yourself in 2016. Please view the following stories: • Dubai Shopping Festival • The Palm Dubai • Decadence in Dubai • Burj Khalifa • Dubailand To view the GETAWAY team at our destinations head to: http://getaway.ninemsn.com.au/ click on factsheets on the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. Click on the area you would like to go (Middle East), then the country or episode (Dubai Shopping Festival) and enjoy the video.

Recommended Stay Although most Australians stay in Dubai 2 or 3 nights which is just enough to get the glimpses of this fascinating city we recommend a longer stay in order to combining city tour and desert safari but also other activities available like Abu Dhabi tour, shopping tours and cruises. For those that wish truly consider Dubai as a holiday destination not stopover a 7 night stay is recommended.

GREECE AND MEDITERRANEAN TRAVEL CENTRE – DUBAI 2016

Introduction

The United Arab Emirates consists of seven states known as Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al-Khaimah, Sharjar and Umm alQuwain. Dubai is the Emirate’s most popular city with many fantastic features. Dubai is a city known for its innovation and surrounded by exotic and mysterious mountains, deserts and seas. Where else can you ski in the middle of a desert? It is a metropolis of rapid transformation, a strong sense of culture and amazing architecture, surrounded by the Hajar Mountains. Enjoy the delights of first class shopping at good prices, have fun bargaining in the Arabic Souks, admire the pioneering feats by the Emirati. Or perhaps travel to the Capital, Abu Dhabi, a newly emerging cultural capital where traditional values unite with luxury and where you can explore a city like no other. Take a desert safari or even dive and explore the underwater paradise. Be amazed at the country where the traditional Bedouin culture meets Western consumerism and big ideas. Watch these ideas come to life in front of your eyes and discover a beauty which combines mountains, beaches, deserts, oases and metropolises into one country. Travel to a country with the only 7 star hotel in the world; the Burj Al Arab, the World’s tallest building and amazing man-made islands like Palm and the World. Be surprised, amazed or simply shocked by the sheer scale of development.

Population

The population of the United Arab Emirates is estimated to be around 7.5 million people while Dubai and Abu Dhabi are estimated at 2.3 and 1.5 million respectively.

Official Language

Arabic is the official language however, English is also widely spoke, particularly in tourist areas.

Climate

The climate during the summer months of May to September is generally hot with temperatures ranging from 38-48 degrees. In addition humidity levels vary from 30-100 percent. The winter months are much cooler with minimum temperatures averaging 25 degrees. And the best time to travel is generally considered to be from November to April. Average Monthly (Degrees celcius):

Getting Around

There are no internal flights between the main cities in the UAE except between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, due to the short flight time. However there is a regular bus service between every city and destination within UAE worth visiting. Car rental is available but be aware that while the roads and highways are all in excellent shape, the traffic can be heavy in the main cities, especially Dubai. Be sure to hold an international drivers license or obtain a temporary one. Dubai also has taxis available and this is a popular method of transport as it Is measured on a kilometre basis, but, you need to be aware that traffic can be heavy in the city centres as well as between city and beach area. In October 2009, the Dubai Metro was opened. However, not all of the metro stops have been completed as yet for this driverless network.

Shopping

Food

Most restaurants in Dubai are located within the hotels, however there are some street-side cafes, coffee lounges and other restaurants featuring authentic Arabic, international and fine dining cuisines. Most hotels feature both Arab and European food as well as some including Chinese, Indian and other popular cuisines. Abu Dhabi is quite different, with every cuisine from fine dining to fast food and most cafes and restaurants feature many different cultures from Asian to Italian. National specialties and popular dishes include Hummus, Tabbouleh, Ghuzi (roast lamb with rice and nuts), Warak Enab (stuffed vine leaves) and Koussa Mashi (stuffed zucchinis).

Try to find a bargain in one of the many traditional Arab Souks, where one can bargain to their hearts content. Additionally there are world class shopping malls such as Mall of the Emirates. Most shopping malls in Dubai are open from 10am to 10pm and most supermarkets open till late, with some 24 hours a day. Smaller shops and boutiques open around 9:30-10am and tend to close between 1 and 4pm and most other shops close for prayer on Friday afternoons reopening until late evening. Some bargains or treasures to find include Antique silver jewellery, Arabian pots, brass items, framed pictures of symbols of Dubai, glass jars filled with different sands all over UAE, beaded key rings, Persian rugs, and various wood furniture particularly those made of Rosewood and Walnut.

Visas

A visa is not required for Australian Passport holders for stays of up to 30 days provided their passports have minimum six months validity on their passports.

Getting There

By Air: Although Abu Dhabi is the capital of the Emirates, Dubai is a larger and more popular gateway for travellers. Emirates Airlines have daily flights from Australia direct and via Bangkok, to Dubai and Etihad has daily direct flights from Australia to Abu Dhabi, while other airlines have regular flights via Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong. Most airlines have flights from European cities to Dubai or Abu Dhabi. By Sea: There is a main port at Abu Dhabi and a cruise terminal at Dubai. Several cruise companies incorporate Dubai in the itineraries either as a stopover point or as a starting/ finishing point.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is generally considered upper class, particularly from Dubai hosting the world’s best resort; The Burj Al Arab. With accommodation types ranging from youth hostels to luxury mountain or beach resorts, the Emirates have matched their accommodation styles to their reputation for the luxurious and opulent. Meanwhile Abu Dhabi prides themselves on producing accommodation of the highest standards, and being able to find something for every budget.

Tipping

Tipping within the United Arab Emirates is similar to those done elsewhere in Western World. Generally, a 10% service fee is included onto the bill; if not however, the same amount is considered adequate. Drivers and guides usually appreciate tips.

Things To Do

Dubai: Dubai is now known for its architectural marvels, as such take a panoramic tour of the city and admire Jumeriah Beach famed for the luxury hotels lining the coast, including the Burj Al Arab. Don’t forget to set your sights onto the Burj Khalifa, currently the tallest building in the world. Watch the progress and completed structures on the man-made Island chains of The Palm Jebel Ali, The Palm Jumeriah, The World and The Palm-Deira. Take the amazing four wheel drive in the Dunes followed by dinner in Bedouin Camp. Enjoy the delights of Dubailand or take to the slopes in the Dubai Sunny Mountain Ski Dome; the largest, free standing ski dome structure or the slopes attached to Mall of the Emirates. Visit one of the many Souks or perhaps experience the desert from the air in a balloon ride or take a desert safari. Go deep-sea fishing or try your hand at the Emirates Golf Club. For those interested in history or culture there are many mosques and forts around both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In particular ensure a visit to the Grand Mosque and White Fort, as well as the Al-Fahidi Fort, which is also the Dubai Museum. Abu Dhabi: As Abu Dhabi is establishing itself as a cultural centre for the Emirates and as such some of the attraction highlights include the Heritage Village, the Corniche and breakwater as you walk along gazing into the water. Visit the Qasr al-Hosn or White Fort, clearly the oldest and most distinguishable feature of Abu Dhabi, once the official residence of the rulers of Abu Dhabi. Visit the spectacular Sheikh Zayed Mosque. The recently completed, no expenses spared Mosque towering over the city. Admire the interior designed with different coloured marble and Swarovski crystal chandeliers. The Mosque features the world’s largest hand woven carpet.

Dubai is a destination in itself. Whether you travelling as a family, on a honeymoon, wanting an authentic cultural experience of seeking the thrills of adventure, Dubai offers something for everyone. Dubai is the city of world records: go up the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, and take in the birdeye view of Dubai from level 124 At The Top, venture out in the Arabian desert on a dune bashing safari, shop till your heart’s content at Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping centre or immerse yourself in the authentic flavours in the areas of Deira and Bastakiya. Whether on a budget or wishing to splurge, Dubai will leave you breathless.

Best Locations

There is no one destination to stay in when visiting Dubai. Each offers its own landmarks and reasons for staying. Ultimately it comes down to your preference and what you would like to experience in Dubai. Deira: Located north of the creek, Deira is cradle of Dubai’s trading roots. A fusion of where the old meets the new, it is an area bustling with activity where visitors can immerse themselves in the atmospheric souk life. The must dos are the Gold Souk and Spice Markets, and take an abra to cross the Creek. Deira is conveniently located ten minutes from Dubai International Airport. Bur Dubai: Located on the Western bank of the Creek, 15-20 minutes away from Dubai Airport, it is the home of the historic quarter of Bastakiya. Several renovated historic buildings, the Dubai Museum and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding are located here. This district is full of shopping streets and souks, including the textile souk. Jumeirah Beach: Approximately 30 minutes away from Dubai Airport, Jumeirah is spread out on the beachfront and is considered to be one of the most exclusive areas within Dubai. Home to the iconic sail shaped Burj Al Arab, the majority of the existing hotels in this area are five-star. These luxurious properties feature pools, swim up bars, spas, a wide range of leisure facilities. Al Barsha: One of the newest areas developed, located in west Dubai and approximately 30 minutes from the airport, Al Barsha is conveniently located close to the infamous Mall of the Emirates, which is best known due to Ski Dubai. This area is easily accessible by metro, on the red line and caters for visitors with a wide range of different accommodation budgets, ranging from 2 to 5 stars. Downtown: Located 20 minutes away from Dubai Airport, the Downtown area is home to some of the city's most important landmarks including Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building, Dubai Mall – the world’s largest shopping mall and the Dubai Fountains. A very cosmopolitan and vibrant area, it comes to life at nights.

Transport

Taxis: Allowing you to get from door to door, taxis in Dubai are extremely inexpensive and one of the best ways to get around. They are metered and the payment is only accepted in cash and only in the local currency dirhams. Ladies also have the option of pink taxis which are also available and driven by female drivers. Modern Water Taxis are also available and the tariff’s are pre-determined from point to point, prior to embarkation. Metro: Dubai metro currently has 2 Metro lines: the Red line and the Green Line, connecting old with new Dubai. It is the world's longest fully automated metro network spanning at 75 kilometres. To travel on the Metro, a Noll card or a Noll ticket must be purchased. Cards can be recharged at vending machines (tickets can be purchased at station) Bus: There are 2500 air conditioned buses and the bus stops are all air-conditioned. The average fare is approximately AED 2 (dirhams) Abra: Abras are the wooden boats which allow visitors to cross from the eastern to the western banks of Dubai Creek, and vice versa. Abra stations service 18 locations and the cost per trip is AED 1 per person per trip (AUD 0.30 cents). The crossing takes approximately 10 minutes.

Dubai Heritage

3 Days

Dubai is a city on the rise, but is filled with amazing heritage and cultural discoveries. This program includes a guided tour of the Al Fahidi Historic District, the last wind tower quarter left on the Arab side of the Gulf. Departs: Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays Day 1: Dubai Our local assistance will meet and welcome you to Dubai at the Dubai International Airport and the transfer to the hotel is provided. Day 2: Dubai-Heritage tour After breakfast at the hotel enjoy a guided walk through the Al Fahidi Historic Distric, visit and talk inside the Diwan Masjid (Mosque), followed by a Q&A session at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) house with freshly brewed Arabic coffee and dates. Al Fahidi Historical District is one of the oldest heritage sites in Dubai filled with sophisticated houses with rough walls shielding the privacy of the wealthy families being a trademark of the Al Fahidi area. Wind towers topped these walls, trapping the wind and funnelling it down into the house as an effective form of early air conditioning. Inner courtyards, shady and highly decorated, provided a sharp contrast to this outer impenetrability. Wandering around Al Fahidi Historical District, it’s easy to transport yourself back to a bygone era. These old buildings have been converted into shady cafés, art galleries and quirky little shops – making this Historical District the perfect place to while away a few hours. In the afternoon we recommend an optional afternoon Heritage Safari (additional cost) to take a step back in time and experience Dubai as it was 50 years ago. Best Locations

In just over 50 years, Abu Dhabi has been transformed from little more than an empty desert inhabited by nomadic tribes into a thriving 21st century society, which remains strongly attached to its cultural roots. Made up of 200 islands there are four prime areas ideal for stopovers or to relax and enjoy the private beach resorts.

Yas Island:

Just 10 minutes from the Abu Dhabi International airport and home to the F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Island is ideal for families or the young at heart who wish to visit Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World. Its location makes it ideal for those who only have time for an overnight stopover.

Saadiyat Island:

The new resort area of Abu Dhabi with its private beaches and luxury resort accommodation will see large growth in the area over the next few years with the opening of the islands Cultural District. With on-going construction designs by five Pritzker prize winners, this district’s cultural icons will include the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. Perfect for families or those looking to take some time to relax at sensational properties with feature pools, swim up bars, spas, a wide range of leisure facilities.

The Corniche:

The Corniche Road spreads across an impressive eight kilometres of manicured waterfront that includes children’s play areas, separate cycle and pedestrian pathways, cafés and restaurants, and the Corniche Beach - a lifeguarded beach park. You can easily walk from many of the Corniche hotels to Marina Mall and Heritage Village by following the Corniche pathways.

Grand Canal:

Easily accessible from the Abu Dhabi International Airport and located on charming canal this area is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Set less than five minutes from Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque, which has a capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers, the waterway at the back of the hotel has abras or water taxis to transport you to a modest souk at the other end.

Transport Taxis:

There are nearly 10,000 taxis in Abu Dhabi and this is the most common form of 'public' transport. You can flag down a taxi anywhere so long as it is safe for the driver to stop. Some taxi companies operate limousines from hotels (usually black in colour) are more expensive and most meters start from 20 Dhs.

Bus:

The network of air conditioned buses operated by the Department of Transport that cross the island of of Abu Dhabi including: Grand (Sheikh Zayed) Mosque, Abu Dhabi Mall, Marina Mall, Al Wahda Mall, Al Mina Shopping Centre, Khalidya Mall, Bain Al Jessrain (Souk at Qaryat Al Beri and Shangri-La Hotel) and Carrefour (on Street 2, aka Airport Rd). The buses around the city are priced at 2 AED per trip (need to pay in coins) and for suburbs 4 AED.

Bikes:

A fun and healthy way to tour the Corniche is to hire a bicycle. A selection of cycles - from mountain bikes, to city bikes which can fit two or three passengers on the back, and even specially designed bikes for ladies wearing abayas. There are four rental stations along the Corniche boardwalk. Hire starts at AED 30 per hour for adults and AED 20 for children.

Introduction

A country with a unique past and present, the country of Oman is something of an enigma. Thought of as Dubai’s Sleepy neighbour, this country borders the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. A country that has something for everyone from World Heritage Listed to ancient archaeological sites, providing a deep insight into the rich history and culture of Oman. Boasting deserts, beaches, islands, mountains, caves and springs, Oman proves it is a country full of contrasts. Notable areas to visit include the capital of Muscat, the desert region of Nizwa, the Hajar Mountains, Tropical Salalah, Wahiba Sands and the exclave of the Musandam Peninsula.

Visas

Australian and NZ passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival for USD14 per person for stay 1 to 10 days and USD 53 for stays above 10 days provided they have a valid passport with at least 6 months validity. Alternatively they can prearrange a visa with the Omani Consulate for an added charge. Please note: you may be refused entry if you have an Israeli stamp in your passport.

Time Zone

Oman is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, which means the country is approximately seven hours behind during AEST in summer and six hours behind during winter.

Official Language

Arabic is the official Language of Oman however English and some Asian languages are also widely spoken throughout tourist areas.

Currency

The Omani Rial is the official currency of Oman. Each Rial is made up of 1000 Baiza. In most tourist areas, banks and moneychangers are available to exchange money. There are also ATM’s around the country.

Musandam: Separated from the rest of Oman by United Arab Emirates, the peninsula of Musandam is a unique enclave surrounded by mountains creating completely isolated villages only reachable by boat. However this creates incredible views over the inlets. Take the opportunity to enjoy some snorkelling or scuba diving to view the abundant sea life or hike the mountains to experience some of the natural wildlife.

Things To Do

Muscat: Once 3 smaller towns, present day Muscat is a a combination of the original walled city, a fishing village and the commercial and diplomatic centre. The city is rather spatial and features a long beach road & corniche boasting kilometres of beaches, fisherman and open spaces. Highlights of Muscat include the Al Jalali & Al Miriani Fort, built during the late 1500’s by the Portuguese, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, known as the third largest mosque in the world and lays claim to a Swarovski crystal chandelier and the second largest hand made Persian carpet. Muscat also features museums, galleries and a number of local and national parks, including Qurum National Park featuring an amusement park and manmade waterfall.

Salalah: Known for being a tropical city from May to August, this city is known as the second city of the Sultanate and famed for the Frankincense trade. Popular as the birthplace of the current Sultan. Other notable sights include the al-Hisn Souq or marketplace where bargains can be found.

Getting There

By Air: getting to Oman is relatively easy as there are many airlines flying including Emirates, Etihad, British Airways, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian and Egyptair. There are daily flights between the airlines with links via Asia, UAE and Europe. By Sea: while there is a port at Muscat there are no passenger services arriving as yet. There are however, some cruise ships which will stop. By Land: arriving by land is easy as there are three 24 hour border crossings from United Arab Emirates. Visa can be arranged at the Border. Muscat lies approx 4 hrs east of Dubai. Additionally there are links via Saudi Arabia and Yemen. There are also daily bus services from Dubai into Oman. Due to the fact that tourism is a relatively new concept in Oman, the majority of the hotels are modern and have a focus on luxury, exclusivity and opulence. Oman provides accomm. from city and beach hotels, apartments and even desert camps.
