Welcome

The United Arab Emirates is a country that is being transformed before our eyes. In 2014, I stopped in Dubai three times and there is always something new to discover or explore. With Dubai winning the rights to host the World Expo in 2020 and the Louve and Guggenheim opening in Abu Dhabi in the next few years you can be assured that there will be no slowing down of the progress taking place. Dubai is a city of contrasts with world-class golf, tennis, horse racing and power boating to name but a few of the available options. Who could imagine that in the middle of the desert, I could ski in the massive indoor ski park? Or that it is so family friendly with activities for everyone? I have enjoyed it immensely when I have travelled here on my own, but even more so when I brought my children for family holiday. Dubai is often seen as just a stopover point on the long flight to and from Europe, which is a real pity as it is in fact a holiday destination in its own right. However, if you are just spending a few days here on the way to or from another destination then you will be spoiled for choice. You have a multitude of options, from well-priced standard hotels to sheer and extravagantly opulent ones where the price, like the buildings, is sky high! However, if you travel in the summer months even these become affordable. The capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, continues to establish itself as the cultural centre of the region. It is also an area that prides itself on amazing food, which is always provided with impeccable service. My friends know me as a “foodie” and the Friday brunch buffets available in Abu Dhabi are a mouth-watering experience. There are an immense amount of choices to suit every taste and budget and very often is combined with exceptional views. Let my staff and I use our knowledge and experience in helping you to see and enjoy the region at its best. Whether you are coming for a holiday or just a one night stop, we will tailor make an itinerary to best suit your time and needs as well as your budget.

We at Greece and Mediterranean Travel Centre have a long lasting relationship with the most watched Australian travel show – Getaway. Since 2004 we have been arranging trips for the cast and crew to many of our favourite destinations. Getaway has put their trust in us to arrange their trips and recommended the magnificent places that Australians should visit. Now you can experience these amazing places for yourself in 2015. Please view the following stories: • Dubai Shopping Festival • The Palm Dubai • Decadence in Dubai • Burj Khalifa • Dubailand To view the GETAWAY team at our destinations head to: http://getaway.ninemsn.com.au/ click on factsheets on the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. Click on the area you would like to go (Middle East), then the country or episode (Dubai Shopping Festival) and enjoy the video.

Recommended Stay Although most Australians stay in Dubai 2 or 3 nights which is just enough to get the glimpses of this fascinating city we recommend a longer stay in order to combining city tour and desert safari but also other activities available like Abu Dhabi tour, shopping tours and cruises. For those that wish truly consider Dubai as a holiday destination not stopover a 7 night stay is recommended.

Getting Around

National Holidays 2015

The United Arab Emirates consists of seven states known as Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al-Khaimah, Sharjar and Umm alQuwain. Dubai is the Emirate’s most popular city with many fantastic features. Dubai is a city known for its innovation and surrounded by exotic and mysterious mountains, deserts and seas. Where else can you ski in the middle of a desert? It is a metropolis of rapid transformation, a strong sense of culture and amazing architecture, surrounded by the Hajar Mountains. Enjoy the delights of first class shopping at good prices, have fun bargaining in the Arabic Souks, admire the pioneering feats by the Emirati. Or perhaps travel to the Capital, Abu Dhabi, a newly emerging cultural capital where traditional values unite with luxury and where you can explore a city like no other. Take a desert safari or even dive and explore the underwater paradise. Be amazed at the country where the traditional Bedouin culture meets Western consumerism and big ideas. Watch these ideas come to life in front of your eyes and discover a beauty which combines mountains, beaches, deserts, oases and metropolises into one country. Travel to a country with the only 7 star hotel in the world; the Burj Al Arab, the World’s tallest building and amazing man-made islands like Palm and the World. Be surprised, amazed or simply shocked by the sheer scale of development.

United Arab Emirates has a local time being 4 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. During Australian Summer, United Arab Emirates is approximately 7 hours behind, while being 6 hours behind during winter.

There are no internal flights between the main cities in the UAE except between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, due to the short flight time. However there is a regular bus service between every city and destination within UAE worth visiting. Car rental is available but be aware that while the roads and highways are all in excellent shape, the traffic can be heavy in the main cities, especially Dubai. Be sure to hold an international drivers license or obtain a temporary one. Dubai also has taxis available and this is a popular method of transport as it Is measured on a kilometre basis, but, you need to be aware that traffic can be heavy in the city centres as well as between city and beach area. In October 2009, the Dubai Metro was opened. However, not all of the metro stops have been completed as yet for this driverless network.

1 Jan – New Years’ Day 3 Jan – Milad Un Nabi (Birth of the Prophet) 15 May – Leilat al-Miraj (Ascension of the Prophet) 18 Jun-17 Jul - Ramadan 18-20 Jul – End of Ramadan 24 Sep – Day of Arafa 25-26 Sep – Eid AL Adha 15 Oct - Al Hijira (Islamic New Year) 2-3 Dec - National Day Weekend: Consists of Fridays and Saturday (not Saturday and Sunday as in Australia) Ramadan: During the month of Ramadan Muslim abstain from eating and drinking during daytime. Tourists travelling during this time are generally not affected.

220/240 volts, 50 hertz. A two prong cylindrical plug adapter is required.

Shopping

Food Most restaurants in Dubai are located within the hotels, however there are some street-side cafes, coffee lounges and other restaurants featuring authentic Arabic, international and fine dining cuisines. Most hotels feature both Arab and European food as well as some including Chinese, Indian and other popular cuisines. Abu Dhabi is quite different, with every cuisine from fine dining to fast food and most cafes and restaurants feature many different cultures from Asian to Italian. National specialties and popular dishes include Hummus, Tabbouleh, Ghuzi (roast lamb with rice and nuts), Warak Enab (stuffed vine leaves) and Koussa Mashi (stuffed zucchinis).

Official Language Arabic is the official language however, English is also widely spoke, particularly in tourist areas.

Climate The climate during the summer months of May to September is generally hot with temperatures ranging from 38-48 degrees. In addition humidity levels vary from 30-100 percent. The winter months are much cooler with minimum temperatures averaging 25 degrees. And the best time to travel is generally considered to be from November to April. Average Monthly Temperatures (Degrees celcius):

A visa is not required for Australian Passport holders for stays of up to 30 days provided their passports have minimum six months validity on their passports. There is a charge of A$15 for the Health Insurance Levy for all visitors to the country.

Try to find a bargain in one of the many traditional Arab Souks, where one can bargain to their hearts content. Additionally there are world class shopping malls such as Mall of the Emirates. Most shopping malls in Dubai are open from 10am to 10pm and most supermarkets open till late, with some 24 hours a day. Smaller shops and boutiques open around 9:30-10am and tend to close between 1 and 4pm and most other shops close for prayer on Friday afternoons reopening until late evening. Some bargains or treasures to find include Antique silver jewellery, Arabian pots, brass items, framed pictures of symbols of Dubai, glass jars filled with different sands all over UAE, beaded key rings, Persian rugs, and various wood furniture particularly those made of Rosewood and Walnut.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is generally considered upper class, particularly from Dubai hosting the world’s best resort; The Burj Al Arab. With accommodation types ranging from youth hostels to luxury mountain or beach resorts, the Emirates have matched their accommodation styles to their reputation for the luxurious and opulent. Meanwhile Abu Dhabi prides themselves on producing accommodation of the highest standards, and being able to find something for every budget.

Getting There By Air: Although Abu Dhabi is the capital of the Emirates, Dubai is a larger and more popular gateway for travellers. Emirates Airlines have daily flights from Australia direct and via Bangkok, to Dubai and Etihad has daily direct flights from Australia to Abu Dhabi, while other airlines have regular flights via Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong. Most airlines have flights from European cities to Dubai or Abu Dhabi. By Sea: There is a main port at Abu Dhabi and a cruise terminal at Dubai. Several cruise companies incorporate Dubai in the itineraries either as a stopover point or as a starting/ finishing point.

Tipping Tipping within the United Arab Emirates is similar to those done elsewhere in Western World. Generally, a 10% service fee is included onto the bill; if not however, the same amount is considered adequate. Drivers and guides usually appreciate tips.

Things To Do Dubai: Dubai is now known for its architectural marvels, as such take a panoramic tour of the city and admire Jumeriah Beach famed for the luxury hotels lining the coast, including the Burj Al Arab. Don’t forget to set your sights onto the Burj Khalifa, currently the tallest building in the world. Watch the progress and completed structures on the man-made Island chains of The Palm Jebel Ali, The Palm Jumeriah, The World and The Palm-Deira. Take the amazing four wheel drive in the Dunes followed by dinner in Bedouin Camp. Enjoy the delights of Dubailand or take to the slopes in the Dubai Sunny Mountain Ski Dome; the largest, free standing ski dome structure or the slopes attached to Mall of the Emirates. Visit one of the many Souks or perhaps experience the desert from the air in a balloon ride or take a desert safari. Go deep-sea fishing or try your hand at the Emirates Golf Club. For those interested in history or culture there are many mosques and forts around both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In particular ensure a visit to the Grand Mosque and White Fort, as well as the Al-Fahidi Fort, which is also the Dubai Museum. Abu Dhabi: As Abu Dhabi is establishing itself as a cultural centre for the Emirates and as such some of the attraction highlights include the Heritage Village, the Corniche and breakwater as you walk along gazing into the water. Visit the Qasr al-Hosn or White Fort, clearly the oldest and most distinguishable feature of Abu Dhabi, once the official residence of the rulers of Abu Dhabi. Visit the spectacular Sheikh Zayed Mosque. The recently completed, no expenses spared Mosque towering over the city. Admire the interior designed with different coloured marble and Swarovski crystal chandeliers. The Mosque features the world’s largest hand woven carpet.

Experienced Management and Staff Greece and Mediterranean Travel Centre is managed by Halina Kubica who has worked and lived in the Mediterranean for many years and is a renowned expert in the Eastern Mediterranean. She travels several times a year throughout the region to ensure that the best selection of products are available at the most competitive prices. Likewise, the staff are extremely knowledgeable and have travelled throughout United Arab Emirates and Oman. We know the area, have inspected the hotels, experienced the tours and are trained to recommend and create the best possible itinerary to suit your needs. Most importantly we understand the needs of Australians.

Compare our Service Clients tell us often that they spend hours online trying to sort through numerous websites, itineraries and hotel descriptions! They sort through lists of hotels, wondering how to choose between hundreds of hotels which all seems to offer good deals. They read endless and often contradictory reviews on Trip Adviser. Over the years we have sent thousands of clients to United Arab Emirates and Oman and we constantly learn about their likes and dislikes and preferences. Every year we improve our products to meet clients' needs and wants. Thanks to our experience we can quickly and professionally design itineraries, suggest options and give clients the most cost and time effective advice about transportation, hotels and tours. Most people don't paint their own house, they hire a professional painter. Most people don't sell their own house, they engage a real estate agent. Save time, save money and save yourself lots of hassle by using the services of a professional travel agent who will book your Arabian experience through us. We cater for clients who are on a tricky budget as well as for those who can afford the most luxurious experience. We have the knowledge, we have the contacts and we have the purchasing power to ensure that you get the best possible price and value for money.

SAVE $$$

Latest Specials and Prices The prices displayed in this brochure are accurate at the time of printing. We do however continue to negotiate special deals and better rates throughout the year, which we will pass on to you at the time of booking. Due to large numbers of hotels in United Arab Emirates the rates sometimes change daily and specials are added or withdrawn. Some hotels offer instant purchase deals that we may be able to offer, but are not printed in the brochure. If you happen to find a special deal or better price on the internet, but not in our brochure, please ensure that you contact us. Please note that prices in the brochure are indication only and it is very common that hotels change prices frequently.

No Credit Card Surcharge You can pay for your holiday by Credit Card. We accept VISA and MasterCard without any surcharge for land arrangements. Take advantage of rewards programs that your card might offer you while paying in an easy and convenient way for your holiday to United Arab Emirates or Oman.

Halina’s Hints When travelling through various countries there are things that the travel books and guides don't always tell you about. There are restaurants that the locals eat at, shops that offer more than just tourist souvenirs, as well as the hidden gems and many places that are off the beaten track. I have been visiting Dubai every year, sometimes few times a year over the past decade, and I have seen it grow from a stopover point to a destination in its own right. When you book with us you benefit from the personal experiences and you will have the opportunity to use some of the valuable tips and knowledge which we have acquired over many years. However at the time of booking our staff can incorporate these and other tips and suggestions to ensure a truly memorable holiday experience. For example I would suggest starting your day with a cultural breakfast at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, located in the historic quarter of Bastakiya. It is a rare opportunity to meet with Emiratis, enjoy delicious local Emirati cuisine and learn about local heritage and traditions in a friendly welcoming environment.

Hotels! Location, Location, Location Be aware that hotels that advertise a lot online may not offer better products or services than the hotels we recommend. They just probably spend more money on online advertising! It is also important to remember that people who write comments online about hotels do not have the same needs or expectations as you may have and may come from different countries, hence may be looking for different experiences. Please note that some locations may attract business travellers, some nightlife seekers and some those who seek authentic experiences. Internet searches usually return hundreds of options in each location. The huge volume of hotels on offer can be quite daunting, and it becomes a challenge to find the right hotel for your needs and at the right price. Our recommended hotels are conveniently located, their staff provide friendly and helpful service and understand the needs of our Australian clientele, and hence, in our view, they are best value for money hotels. By selecting our hotel you can be sure that you will stay at a hotel that many of our previous clients used and were happy with. Talk to our team and we will recommend from our large selection a hotel that meets your budget and expectations. We still retain a wide range of hotels for you to choose from, but have selected for the brochure only a few that we recommend in each category due to space limitations.

Dubai

Dubai is a destination in itself. Whether you travelling as a family, on a honeymoon, wanting an authentic cultural experience of seeking the thrills of adventure, Dubai offers something for everyone. Dubai is the city of world records: go up the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, and take in the bird-eye view of Dubai from level 124 At The Top, venture out in the Arabian desert on a dune bashing safari, shop till your heart’s content at Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping centre or immerse yourself in the authentic flavours in the areas of Deira and Bastakiya. Whether on a budget or wishing to splurge, Dubai will leave you breathless.

Best Locations There is no one destination to stay in when visiting Dubai. Each offers its own landmarks and reasons for staying. Ultimately it comes down to your preference and what you would like to experience in Dubai. Deira: Located north of the creek, Deira is cradle of Dubai’s trading roots. A fusion of where the old meets the new, it is an area bustling with activity where visitors can immerse themselves in the atmospheric souk life. The must dos are the Gold Souk and Spice Markets, and take an abra to cross the Creek. Deira is conveniently located ten minutes from Dubai International Airport. Bur Dubai: Located on the Western bank of the Creek, 15-20 minutes away from Dubai Airport, it is the home of the historic quarter of Bastakiya. Several renovated historic buildings, the Dubai Museum and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding are located here. This district is full of shopping streets and souks, including the textile souk. Jumeirah Beach: Approximately 30 minutes away from Dubai Airport, Jumeirah is spread out on the beachfront and is considered to be one of the most exclusive areas within Dubai. Home to the iconic sail shaped Burj Al Arab, the majority of the existing hotels in this area are five-star. These luxurious properties feature pools, swim up bars, spas, a wide range of leisure facilities. Al Barsha: One of the newest areas developed, located in west Dubai and approximately 30 minutes from the airport, Al Barsha is conveniently located close to the infamous Mall of the Emirates, which is best known due to Ski Dubai. This area is easily accessible by metro, on the red line and caters for visitors with a wide range of different accommodation budgets, ranging from 2 to 5 stars. Downtown: Located 20 minutes away from Dubai Airport, the Downtown area is home to some of the city's most important landmarks including Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building, Dubai Mall – the world’s largest shopping mall and the Dubai Fountains. A very cosmopolitan and vibrant area, it comes to life at nights.

Transport Taxis: Allowing you to get from door to door, taxis in Dubai are extremely inexpensive and one of the best ways to get around. They are metered and the payment is only accepted in cash and only in the local currency dirhams. Ladies also have the option of pink taxis which are also available and driven by female drivers. Modern Water Taxis are also available and the tariff’s are pre-determined from point to point, prior to embarkation. Metro: Dubai metro currently has 2 Metro lines: the Red line and the Green Line, connecting old with new Dubai. It is the world's longest fully automated metro network spanning at 75 kilometres. To travel on the Metro, a Noll card or a Noll ticket must be purchased. Cards can be recharged at vending machines (tickets can be purchased at station) Bus: There are 2500 air conditioned buses and the bus stops are all air-conditioned. The average fare is approximately AED 2 (dirhams) Abra: Abras are the wooden boats which allow visitors to cross from the eastern to the western banks of Dubai Creek, and vice versa. Abra stations service 18 locations and the cost per trip is AED 1 per person per trip (AUD 0.30 cents). The crossing takes approximately 10 minutes.

Best Locations In just over 50 years, Abu Dhabi has been transformed from little more than an empty desert inhabited by nomadic tribes into a thriving 21st century society, which remains strongly attached to its cultural roots. Made up of 200 islands there are four prime areas ideal for stopovers or to relax and enjoy the private beach resorts.

Yas Island: Just 10 minutes from the Abu Dhabi International airport and home to the F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Island is ideal for families or the young at heart who wish to visit Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World. Its location makes it ideal for those who only have time for an overnight stopover.

With on-going construction designs by five Pritzker prize winners, this district’s cultural icons will include the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. Perfect for families or those looking to take some time to relax at sensational properties with feature pools, swim up bars, spas, a wide range of leisure facilities.

The Corniche: The Corniche Road spreads across an impressive eight kilometres of manicured waterfront that includes children’s play areas, separate cycle and pedestrian pathways, cafés and restaurants, and the Corniche Beach - a lifeguarded beach park. You can easily walk from many of the Corniche hotels to Marina Mall and Heritage Village by following the Corniche pathways.

Grand Canal: Easily accessible from the Abu Dhabi International Airport and located on charming canal this area is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Visas

A country with a unique past and present, the country of Oman is something of an enigma. Thought of as Dubai’s Sleepy neighbour, this country borders the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. A country that has something for everyone from World Heritage Listed to ancient archaeological sites, providing a deep insight into the rich history and culture of Oman. Boasting deserts, beaches, islands, mountains, caves and springs, Oman proves it is a country full of contrasts. Notable areas to visit include the capital of Muscat, the desert region of Nizwa, the Hajar Mountains, Tropical Salalah, Wahiba Sands and the exclave of the Musandam Peninsula.

Australian and NZ passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival for USD14 per person for stay 1 to 10 days and USD 53 for stays above 10 days provided they have a valid passport with at least 6 months validity. Alternatively they can prearrange a visa with the Omani Consulate for an added charge. Please note: you may be refused entry if you have an Israeli stamp in your passport.

Getting There By Air: getting to Oman is relatively easy as there are many airlines flying including Emirates, Etihad, British Airways, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian and Egyptair. There are daily flights between the airlines with links via Asia, UAE and Europe. By Sea: while there is a port at Muscat there are no passenger services arriving as yet. There are however, some cruise ships which will stop. By Land: arriving by land is easy as there are three 24 hour border crossings from United Arab Emirates. Visa can be arranged at the Border. Muscat lies approx 4 hrs east of Dubai. Additionally there are links via Saudi Arabia and Yemen. There are also daily bus services from Dubai into Oman.

Accommodation Time Zone Oman is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, which means the country is approximately seven hours behind during AEST in summer and six hours behind during winter.

Due to the fact that tourism is a relatively new concept in Oman, the majority of the hotels are modern and have a focus on luxury, exclusivity and opulence. Oman provides accomm. from city and beach hotels, apartments and even desert camps.

Official Language Arabic is the official Language of Oman however English and some Asian languages are also widely spoken throughout tourist areas.

Oman Tipping As a general rule, 10% of a bill in any restaurant is recommended. With regards to tipping guides and drivers, we suggest putting aside US$2 per person per day.

Things To Do

The Omani Rial is the official currency of Oman. Each Rial is made up of 1000 Baiza. In most tourist areas, banks and moneychangers are available to exchange money. There are also ATM’s around the country.

Nizwa: The ancient capital of Oman, Nizwa was a creative haven for all scholars, scientists and poets. Famed for the popular Nizwa Fort and souk located within the walls. Located nearby is the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Bahla Fort. Known as the biggest fort in Oman, it features 132 watch towers and a 13km long wall dating back to the ninth century.

Other locations: visit Wahiba where local Bedouins still reside and introduce visitors to camel riding, dune bashing and an overall desert experience. Another sight to be seen is Wadi Shab. Located approximately 100kms southeast of Muscat, visitors can explore caves and discover pools of the brightest green. Hajar Mountains separates Batinah Coast from the rest of the country but enables some of the best panoramic views of the area. Hidden oasis towns dot the slopes of the mountain range.

General Information • Muscat International Airport previously called Seeb International Airport is situated 32 km from Muscat, the capital of Oman. The airport currently has two terminals with the second completed in 2014. Transfer from the airport to hotel in city centre takes approx. 45 minutes.

Halina's Hints Most visitors to Omman will travel to Nizwa but only some would consider Hajar Mountain as mountains are usually associated with hiking or physical activities. I have actually reached the top of Jabel Shams at the comfort of 4 x4 car driven by my guide. It is a very easy and picturesque ride from Nizwa. Most of the road is actually sealed and it reaches the high of almost 3000 meters above sea level. There is spectacular Canyon one can see from the top, abundance of wildlife and unique hotel available for those who wish to stay overnight. Although my coffee was served with goat milk I truly enjoyed my stay and would recommend it to everyone. The contrast was spectacular it was 4 degree centigrade on the top of the Mountain, 17 in Nizwa when I reached it about 1 hour later and after further 2 hours drive I was in Muscat and the temperature was 25. Amazing experience.

Conveniently situated near the city centre, the Park Inn stands out with its rooftop pool and classic modern interiors. The hotel offers easy access to the central business and shopping districts as well as the local attractions such as Al Ghubra Beach. Offering an all day buffet restaurant, an international bar, fitness centre, retail outlets, meeting rooms and business centre. Each of the 175 rooms feature in room safe, private bathroom with hairdryer, tea/coffee facilities, wireless internet access, DD phone and LCD TVs. Breakfast: American Buffet. Child: Child 0-12 years free when sharing with parents using existing bedding.
