Experience the adventure of space flight 4

The space flight exhibition at the TECHNIK MUSEUM SPEYER In the space flight hall the Technik Museum Speyer in cooperation with SPACE EXPO e.V. presents Europe’s largest space flight exhibition. The building has a length of 85 meters, a width of 75 meters and a height of up to 22 meters. On three floors with a total exhibition space of 9,000 m2 hundreds of exhibit items document the history of manned space flight from the beginnings in the early 1960s up to the International Space Station ISS.

The Highlights • Russian orbiter BURAN, the counterpart of the US Space Shuttle. Outside from Russia and the USA the BURAN in Speyer is the only space shuttle that can be visited in a museum. • Exhibition area “The Moon” - a carefully designed ensemble of the lunar landings with an original lunar rock which had been brought to Earth by Apollo 15. • Exhibition area “German Astronauts” presenting numerous exhibits from training and missions as well as awards of all German astronauts. • Original landing capsule of Soyuz mission TM 19 with which the German astronaut Ulf Merbold returned to earth from space station Mir in 1994. • Space exhibition “APOLLO AND BEYOND” including hundreds of exhibit items, photographs, documents, movies and information panels documenting the history of American and European manned space flight. Amongst others, the exhibition covers the following milestones of space flight: The visionaries - Wernher von Braun and J. F. Kennedy • The first manned missions - Mercury, Gemini • The Apollo program and the lunar flights / lunar landings • The space transportation system space shuttle • The International Space Station ISS. • Large exhibition area covering the history of manned Soviet / Russian space flight with 61 information panels as well as space suits, space food and many pieces of other equipment, amongst them a space toilet which also works in weightlessness. • 1:1 replica of the Vostok spacecraft with which Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into outer space, completed the first orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961. • 1:1 test module of the ISS module COLUMBUS and 1:1 replicas of the APOLLO lunar module and the “moon car“ lunar roving vehicle. • Original training module of the German designed space laboratory SPACELAB from the German Aerospace Center DLR which was used by the astronauts, scientists and flight controllers to prepare for their missions. • Many other true-to-the-original models including a large 1:10 model of the International Space Station ISS.

In contrast to other movie theaters, in the IMAX DOME the film is not shown on a flat screen but rather on a gigantic dome. The Museum Wilhelmsbau at the Technik Museum Speyer The Museum Wilhelmsbau on the premises of the Technik Museum Speyer presents a fascinating collection of rare objects from the 19th and 20th century, bringing alive the spirit of bygone times. Art Nouveau and the Roaring Twenties are represented here just like the era of rock‘n roll. • Thousands of exhibits on four floors with 3,000 m2 exhibition space. • Historic fashion, accessories, jewels and uniforms, many of them decorated on mannequins seeming so lifelike that you would expect them to walk through the room at any moment. Specials for school classes The Technik Museum Speyer is an ideal destination for a field trip which is both, informative and entertaining for students of all ages. • For school classes there is no lower limit for the number of participants if the class is accompanied by a teacher! • Economically priced packages with or without lunch for all school classes independent of the age of the students. • Due to the large variety of exhibits and the IMAX DOME movie theater the museum offers illustrative material for every curriculum. • Special guided tours that are tailored to the requirements of school classes and a free museum quiz allowing the students to discover the museum on their own. Our questionnaires are suitable for students of all grades. They will be handed over upon arrival of the school class or can be downloaded from our homepage in advance. • IMAX DOME movie theater – The largest blackboard on earth. A visit to the IMAX DOME movie theater with its almost 1,000 m2 large dome screen will definitely be the highlight of any field trip. While enjoying a meal you can watch the fantastic scenery of the museum, look back on what you have already seen and fortify yourself for a new tour. Destinations Speyer Cathedral Just a few minutes’ walk away from the museum you can find the Speyer Cathedral, the largest Romanesque cathedral in the world. The cathedral belongs to the UNESCO world cultural heritage and is considered one of the most important medieval heritage buildings. The most ancient part of the monument, which is almost 1,000 years old, is the crypt – one of the most beautiful lower churches of the Western world. Four room sections coalesce into a wide hall crypt with a vault height of almost 7 meters, which is exceptional for a lower church. From the crypt the modest burial sites of the medieval rulers can be reached. This part was given its current form and vault at the beginning of the 20th century. Eight medieval emperors and kings were buried at Speyer Cathedral, making it one of the most important burial sites of early German rulers. Since October 2012, two new areas are open to the visitors: The Emperor Hall in the western part was completely redesigned and is now presenting an exhibition of frescos by Johann Baptist Schraudolph. Moreover, in the southwest tower a vantage platform can be reached by a stairway with 304 steps. Who climbs the tower is rewarded by a stunning view over the city, the nearby Rhine and the picturesque surrounding landscape. In addition, from this site the impressive building can be viewed from a completely new perspective. More information: www.dom-zu-speyer.de Other places of interest are the “Altpörtel”, in former times the main entrance of the medieval city wall, the Jewish neighborhood with the Jewish ritual bath, the Historic Museum which, amongst others, shows the cathedral treasury with the burial crowns recovered from the Salian emperor tombs in the Speyer Cathedral, the town hall, the fish market and much more. Arrival The Technik Museum Speyer is located in the center of Speyer only five minutes away from the autobahn A 61 (Koblenz – Speyer). Leave the autobahn at the exit “Speyer” or “Speyer / Hockenheim” and follow the signs “Speyer” and “Dom / Museen”, respectively, which will guide you directly to our large bus and car parking lots. From the main station a public bus takes you directly to the premises of the museum. Dogs are not allowed in the museum and the IMAX movie theater. 365 days a year from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Sundays and bank holidays until 7:00 p.m. (on 24 and 31 December shortened opening hours).
