“Come and see.” That is the invitation the Lord extends to the two disciples who ask where he lives in today’s Gospel. Jesus extends that same invitation to us: “Come and see. Come and know me. Come and follow me.” It is an invitation to grow in friendship and intimacy with the Lord; the gift of faith. Let us grow closer to Him and learn of His goodness and mercy so that, like Andrew, we will share with others that we have found the Messiah. We are about to begin the Archbishop’s Charities Development Drive (ABCD) campaign. Many of you are familiar with this campaign and how we are all called as a parish to support it. If we all contribute to this effort according to our possibilities, we can reach our goal. Our ABCD goal is $284,000 and our Assessment for January December, 2018 is $91,000. Please consider in prayer your ABCD pledge this year. If you have not contributed to the ABCD campaign, I invite you to make an effort and pledge this year. I count on your generosity in order to cover these two important Archdiocesan collections. With the blessings that we have received and when we gratefully return them to the Lord we can do mighty things to allow Him to shine through us for the good of many. May God bless you!

“Vengan y verán” es la invitación que el Señor extiende a los dos discípulos que en el Evangelio de hoy le han preguntado dónde vive. Es la misma invitación que nos extiende a nosotros: “Vengan y verán. Vengan a conocerme. Vengan a seguirme”. Una invitación a crecer en amistad e intimidad con el Señor, el don de la fe. Acerquémonos cada vez más a Él y conozcamos su bondad y su misericordia para que, como Andrés, llevemos a otros la noticia de que hemos encontrado al Mesías. Ya vamos a comenzar la Campaña de Caridades y Desarrollo del Arzobispo (ABCD). Muchos de ustedes ya están familiarizados con esta campaña y con nuestro compromiso de apoyarla como parroquia. Si todos contribuimos a este esfuerzo de acuerdo a nuestras posibilidades podremos alcanzar nuestra meta. Este año la meta de nuestra parroquia es $284,000; además, nuestra contribución fija de enero a diciembre del 2018 es $91,000. Les ruego reflexionar en oración cuál será su compromiso con ABCD este año. Si no han contribuido antes a esta campaña, los invito a hacer el esfuerzo de comprometerse este año. Cuento con su generosidad para cubrir estas dos importantes colectas arquidiocesanas. 2018 Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive (ABCD) Begins The Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD), our diocesan annual appeal, provides us with an opportunity to come together as one community of faith to serve the educational, physical and spiritual needs of our Catholic community here in south Florida. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we come together to advance our mission to love and serve, as Jesus did, through acts of charity and compassion to help those in need. Our Faith is alive in our parishes and schools, in our apostolic movements and ministries, and in our various programs of outreach to the poor, the immigrant, the elderly, the homeless and the disabled. It is alive in our people, people of all backgrounds and ages, and throughout every corner of our Archdiocese. For all of us, making a gift to the ABCD is a way to give expression to the faith contained in our hearts; and for many, it is also an opportunity to give back, in thanksgiving, for the many blessings we have received from God. If you have not already responded to the letter sent to you by Archbishop Wenski in the mail, please take time to prayerfully consider your pledge for this year. Open your hearts in support of the ABCD and the hundreds of thousands of people it helps by making a gift. Each gift makes a difference and changes lives.

Getting to Know the NEW Saints Conozcamos a los NUEVOS Santos BLESSED CLEMENS AUGUST VON GALEN —
Bishop of Münster, Germany, was noted for his public opposition to Nazism. Ordained to the priesthood in 1904, he published “The Plague of Laicism and Its Manifestations” in 1932, deploring the godlessness of postWorld War I Germany. He was made bishop of Münster in 1933. Galen soon became a powerful critic of the Nazis. His opposition to their racism and totalitarianism began on Easter 1934 and continued unabated. In 1941 von Galen preached against the general lawlessness of the Gestapo, the confiscation of religious property, and the T4 Program instituted by Hitler in 1939 that involved the systematic murder of more than 70,000 sick, elderly, mentally ill, and disabled Germans. Because of this, the Nazi government put him under virtual house arrest, deported priests serving in his diocese and took violent retribution against at least three priests who had distributed the sermon. Documents discovered later showed that the Nazis were close to a decision to hang the bishop. Galen was named a cardinal on Febuary18, 1946, and died shortly after. He was beatified in 2005.

Fue nombrado obispo de Münster en 1933 y pronto se convirtió en fuerte crítico de los nazis. Su oposición al racismo y totalitarismo de ese régimen comenzó en 1934 y continuó sin tregua. En 1941 von Galen predicó contra los abusos de la Gestapo, la confiscación de la propiedad religiosa y el Programa T4 instituido por Hitler en 1939, que promovía el asesinato sistemático de más de 70,000 alemanes enfermos, ancianos, enfermos mentales y discapacitados. [T]oday we ask ourselves: why go to Sunday Mass? The Sunday celebration of the Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life We Christians go to Sunday Mass to encounter the Risen Lord, or better still to allow ourselves to be encountered by him, to hear his Word, to nourish ourselves at his table, and thus to become the Church, that is, his mystical living Body in the world. Sunday is a holy day for us, sanctified by the Eucharistic celebration, the living presence of the Lord among us and for us. Thus, it is the Mass that makes Sunday Christian. The Christian Sunday revolves around the Mass. For a Christian, what is a Sunday in which the encounter with the Lord is lacking? How can we respond to those who say that it is of no use going to Mass, even on Sunday, because the important thing is to live well, to love our neighbor? It is true that the quality of Christian life is measured by the capacity to love, as Jesus said: “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (Jn 13:35); but how can we practice the Gospel without drawing the energy necessary to do so, one Sunday after another, from the inexhaustible source of the Eucharist? We do not go to Mass in order to give something to God, but to receive what we truly need from him.
Audiencia General del 13 de diciembre de 2017 [H]oy nos preguntamos: ¿Por qué ir a misa el domingo? La celebración dominical de la eucaristía está en el centro de la vida de la Iglesia... [V]amos a misa el domingo para encontrar al Señor resucitado, o mejor, para dejarnos encontrar por Él, escuchar su palabra, alimentarnos en su mesa y así convertirnos en Iglesia, es decir, en su Cuerpo místico viviente en el mundo. [El]l domingo es un día santo para nosotros, santificado por la celebración eucarística, presencia viva del Señor entre nosotros y para nosotros. ¡Es la misa, por lo tanto, lo que hace el domingo cristiano! ¿Qué podemos responder a quien dice que no hay que ir a misa, ni siquiera el domingo, porque lo importante es vivir bien y amar al prójimo? Es cierto que la calidad de la vida cristiana se mide por la capacidad de amar, como dijo Jesús: «En esto conocerán todos que sois discípulos míos: si os tenéis amor los unos a los otros» (Juan 13, 35); ¿Pero cómo podemos practicar el Evangelio sin sacar la energía necesaria para hacerlo, un domingo después de otro, en la fuente inagotable de la eucaristía? No vamos a misa para dar algo a Dios, sino para recibir de Él aquello de lo que realmente tenemos necesidad.

Saint of the Month: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Born to one of New York’s wealthiest families, Elizabeth Ann Bailey was married at 19 to a wealthy businessman, William Seton, by whom she had five children. A widow at 30, Elizabeth witnessed Catholicity in action while in Italy with her dying husband. Three basic points led to her conversion: belief in the Real Presence, devotion to the Blessed Mother and conviction that the Catholic Church led back to the apostles and to Christ. Many of her family and friends rejected her when she became a Catholic in 1805. Mother Seton went on to found the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity, and opened the first American parish school. Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first American-born citizen to be canonized in 1975.
