Please register at the parish if you have recently moved, or even if you have been attending here for years, by completing the form included in the bulletin. By registering in a parish, you are declaring your desire to be part of a Catholic faith community. Your registration affects a parish in many ways. Census numbers may determine how many priests are assigned to a parish, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how many Masses and programs are planned and scheduled. Reasons to Register: ► Registration enables the parish pastor and staff to get to know you better, and helps them be able to communicate with you by sending you mailings. Once you are registered, please notify the parish office of any changes in address or phone number. ► You will also receive a packet of envelopes to place your regular contributions. This is important if you want to receive a year-end statement from the parish for income tax purposes. If you do not wish to receive weekly contribution envelopes, this should not be a reason not to register. Just let the secretary know, and envelopes will not be ordered. ► Members can expect pastoral care from their parish, including baptisms, anointing of the sick, and funerals. ► Members are given priority when reserving a date for a Catholic Wedding What is expected of parish members: Here are the minimums that are expected of parish members (Catholics): ► Participate at Mass on Sundays, and also on the holy days of obligation. ► Go to Confession at least once a year, ► receive Communion at least once a year during the Easter season. ► Join in fast and abstinence during Lent ► provide for the support of the Church through monetary gifts and/or active service. Children are considered members with their parents until they turn 18 years old. Anuncios Parroquiales IV Domingo Ordinario Mc 1, 21-28 En aquel tiempo, se hallaba Jesús a Cafarnaúm y el sábado siguiente fue a la sinagoga y se puso a enseñar. Los oyentes quedaron asombrados de sus palabras, pues enseñaba como quien tiene autoridad y no como los escribas. Había en la sinagoga un hombre poseído por un espíritu inmundo, que se puso a gritar: "¿Qué quieres tú con nosotros, Jesús de Nazaret? ¿Has venido a acabar con nosotros? Ya sé quién eres: el Santo de Dios". Jesús le ordenó: "¡Cállate y sal de él!" El espíritu inmundo, sacudiendo al hombre con violencia y dando un alarido, salió de él. Todos quedaron estupefactos y se preguntaban: "¿Qué es esto? ¿Qué nueva doctrina es ésta? Este hombre tiene autoridad para mandar hasta a los espíritus inmundos y lo obedecen". Y muy pronto se extendió su fama por toda Galilea. Zdumiewali się Jego nauką: uczył ich bowiem jak ten, który ma władzę, a nie jak uczeni w Piśmie. Był właśnie w synagodze człowiek opętany przez ducha nieczystego. Zaczął on wołać: Czego chcesz od nas, Jezusie Nazarejczyku? Przyszedłeś nas zgubić. Wiem, kto jesteś: Święty Boży. Lecz Jezus rozkazał mu surowo: Milcz i wyjdź z niego. Wtedy duch nieczysty zaczął go targać i z głośnym krzykiem wyszedł z niego. A wszyscy się zdumieli, tak że jeden drugiego pytał: Co to jest? Nowa jakaś nauka z mocą. Nawet duchom nieczystym rozkazuje i są Mu posłuszne. I wnet rozeszła się wieść o Nim wszędzie po całej okolicznej krainie galilejskiej. Mk 1,21-28

OFIAROWANIE PAŃSKIE 2 lutego Uroczystość Ofiarowania Pańskiego przypada czterdziestego dnia po Bożym Narodzeniu. Jest to pamiątka ofiarowania Pana Jezusa w świątyni jerozolimskiej i dokonania przez Matkę Bożą obrzędu oczyszczenia. Święto Ofiarowania jest związane z tajemnicą Narodzenia Pańskiego i dlatego jeszcze dziś wolno śpiewać kolędy. W Polsce święto Ofiarowania Pana Jezusa nabrało charakteru wybitnie maryjnego. Polacy widzą w Maryi tę, która sprowadziła na ziemię niebiańskie Światło i która nas tym Światłem broni i osłania od wszelkiego zła. Dlatego często brano do ręki gromnice, zwłaszcza w niebezpieczeństwach wielkich klęsk i grożącej śmierci. Niegdyś wielkim wrogiem domów w Polsce były burze, a zwłaszcza pioruny, które zapalały i niszczyły głównie drewniane domostwa. Właśnie od nich miała strzec domy świeca poświęcona w święto Ofiarowania Chrystusa. Zwykle była ona pięknie przystrajana i malowana. W czasie burzy zapalano ją i stawiano w oknach, by prosić Maryję o ochronę. Gromnicę wręczano również konającym, aby ochronić ich przed napaścią złych duchów. Ze świętem Matki Bożej Gromnicznej kończy się w Polsce okres śpiewania kolęd, trzymania żłóbków i choinek - kończy się tradycyjny (a nie liturgiczny ten skończył się świętem Chrztu Pańskiego) okres Bożego Narodzenia. Dzisiejsze święto zamyka więc cykl uroczystości związanych z objawieniem się światu Słowa Wcielonego. Liturgia po raz ostatni w

St. Mary’s Parish News Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time Mark 1:21-28

Jesus heals a man with an unclean spirit and his fame spreads throughout Galilee. Background on the Gospel Reading Today’s Gospel continues our reading from Mark and describes what some believe was likely to have been a typical day in Jesus’ ministry. Jesus and the disciples that chose to follow him in last week’s Gospel arrive at Capernaum, a small village on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus teaches in the synagogue on the Sabbath. Mark reports that the people respond to Jesus’ teaching with astonishment, noting Jesus’ authority and contrasting it with the scribes’. Early in Mark’s Gospel we already find evidence of the tension that will manifest itself fully in Jerusalem. After Jesus’ preaching, an even more astonishing thing happens. A man possessed with an unclean spirit calls out to Jesus. As we see in this example and throughout Mark’s Gospel, the spirits and demons seem to know Jesus and are often fearful of him. In fact, they seem to understand Jesus’ identity better than his disciples. As we will read again and again in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus orders the spirit to be quiet and drives the unclean spirit out of the man. Jesus’ ability to heal those possessed by demons is an indication of his power over evil. In the prescientific age of Jesus’ time, all illnesses were understood to be manifestations of evil and sinfulness. Our modern understanding of illness is very different. Possession by unclean spirits may have been a way to describe what we might call mental illness today. It may have even been a way of describing certain kinds of physical conditions. There is evidence that there were many kinds of exorcists and healers in first-century Palestine. Jesus appears to be like these healers, but he heals with unique authority and connects his healing activities with the words of his preaching. We are missing the point that Mark is trying to make in this Gospel, however, if we try to explain away the healing work of Jesus. The crowds see in Jesus’ cure of the possessed man further affirmation of his authority. Jesus’ power to heal gives greater credence to his teaching. Jesus impresses the crowds through his words, which are manifested with power in his deeds. Mark’s Gospel tells us that because of the authority with which he healed, Jesus’ fame spread throughout all of Galilee. Attention We remind our parishioners and friends that the use of cell phones and other electronic devices is not allowed during Mass. Please, we ask that before entering the Church, turn off your cell phone or put it in silence mode, and restrain yourself from using it during the Mass.

January 28, 2018 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me” Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme for 2018 is “Come, Follow Me.” Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me.” After our parish goal of $ 18,173 is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

PRESENTATION OF THE LORD Friday, February 2nd is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Masses will be celebrated at 7:30 AM, 8:15 AM Spanish, 6:30PM - Polish and 8:00PM - Spanish . If you plan to attend Mass on this special feast, you are invited to bring a candle/s with you to have them blessed for personal and family use during the year. ENGLISH LENTEN MISSION The Mission Lenten Retreat will begin on Saturday, February 24 and will end on Wednesday, February 28. The retreat will be conducted by Fr. Piotr Chyla. The next religious education class (CCD) will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 8AM. The children will meet at the Church to attend Mass at 8AM, please dress appropriately. First Holy Communion Meetings for Parents On Monday evening, January 29, 2018 a mandatory meeting will be held at 6PM in English, and at 7PM in Spanish for parents of students who are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion Confirmation Meeting for Parents On Tuesday evening, January 30, 2018 a mandatory meeting will be held for parents whose sons/ daughters are preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.
