Moxa's data acquisition solutions come with the necessary safety certifications and meet industry-proven standards to provide consistent, reliable operation in harsh environment applications, including railway, oil and gas, and marine.
With more and more field devices now being used to monitor equipment status, system integrators are faced with the challenge of connecting a diverse range of I/O devices to SCADA systems, but without sacrificing communication reliability and efficiency. Moxa’s unique smart cellular solutions and active communication technology provides more reliable, seamless, and efficient data communication than ever before.
Smart Cellular Reconnection that Keeps Devices Always Online
Moxa’s smart cellular reconnection technology recovers from unexpected disconnections automatically by using a sophisticated algorithm that combines (1) trying to reconnect to the cellular network, (2) rebooting the system software, and (3) rebooting the system hardware. Engineers no longer need to go onsite and restart the hardware every time the cellular signal gets disconnected.
Seamlessly Connect to Cellular I/O Devices
The dynamic IP addresses commonly used for cellular connections make it hard for control systems to link to cellular data acquisition devices. With Moxa’s MX-AOPC server, SCADA/ HMI users can easily connect to field I/O devices. For web-based applications, Moxa’s cellular data access utility provides an ideal way to seamlessly connect to remote cellular IO units.

Moxa's Solution • Smart Cellular Reconnection • Easy data logging service/configuration • Active type communication • Easy alarm service/configuration • Wide operating temperature design, C1D2, ATEX Zone 2 approval • Supports C/C++ and IEC 61131-3 programming for the ioPAC 554 series
Building a Real-Time Device Monitoring System for Oil and Gas
2-wire Ethernet technology
Leverage 2-wire Cable for Ethernet-Based Infotainment on Refurbished Trains
Since coupler connectors on older trains may only have 2 pins, Moxa’s 2-wire Ethernet technology offers system integrators an attractive option for upgrading the train’s IP network to a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet backbone. As an added plus, Moxa’s 2-wire Ethernet technology supports Ethernet bypass functionality, ensuring that the Ethernet backbone will remain active when the the network on one of the carriages shuts down.
Smart Cellular Reconnection
ACS (Automatic Carriage Sequencing)
With Moxa’s unique smart cellular reconnection method, when a disconnection occurs, the system will automatically trigger a connection retry, a cellular modem reboot, or initiate a software reboot, without any programming effort.
Train consists can change as frequently as one or more times during the course of a single trip. However, when this happens, the train-wide passenger information system must be able to immediately adapt to these changes. Moxa’s Automatic Carriage Sequencing technology quickly and automatically resets the train car sequence, without disrupting network transmissions within the train.
See page 4 for details.
This digital oilfield system, which was implemented to decrease non-production time (NPT), uses a remote monitoring system to monitor the pressure, temperature, and flow rate of multiple wellheads in the oil field. The system improves production at each wellhead, and sends alarms promptly, allowing the oil company engineers to respond to emergencies as soon as they occur.
When upgrading passenger information systems on aging trains, system integrators need to find a way to implement a modern multipurpose network using old wiring in space-limited environments. By reusing or repurposing as much of the existing legacy hardware as possible, system integrators can maximize interoperability, but at a lower cost than would otherwise be possible.

An ETC system contains several key elements, including I/O devices, sensors, IP cameras, and Ethernet switches. When a vehicle enters the toll road, an ID scanner installed on the gantry detects the transponder installed on the vehicle, and transmits the ID information through switches to a data center. When a non-compliant vehicle enters the toll road, sensors trigger cameras mounted on the gantry to send an image of the offending license plate to the control room to initiate payment collection. With thousands of vehicles passing under each gantry every day, the ETC system uses local intelligence to process sensor data and trigger the IP camera, further reducing the network transmission load between the gantry and the control center.

Reliable Redundancy with up to 200 Mbps Transmission Speed Moxa’s 2-wire Ethernet solution provides more options for your TCN. One 2-wire Ethernet module can be used to create a 100 Mbps Ethernet backbone using existing cabling, but doesn’t support by-pass functionality. However, if you’re looking for more bandwidth plus redundancy, you can use Moxa’s 2-wire Ethernet modules in pairs. This innovative solution uses two 2-wire ioPAC Ethernet modules to run a 200 Mbps redundant Ethernet backbone over 4 wires. If one pair of wires fails, the ioPAC will continue to pump out 100 Mbps of Ethernet bandwidth.
Rugged, Compact, All-in-one New modular programmable controller ideal for railway applications
Efficient Automatic Carriage Sequencing (ACS) Older train systems run on a daisy-chain network topology based on either CANbus or RS-485. When it comes time to switch to an IP-based network on the refurbished train, duplicating the automatic carriage sequencing function is not easy to do. Moxa gets around this challenge by building support for ACS functions directly into the new IP network, greatly reducing the effort required by the system integrator.
Maximize Savings and Interoperability with This Easy-to-Install, Integrated Platform Sustainable system reliability, seamless data transmission, and simplified deployment and maintenance make Moxa’s ioPAC programmable controller ideal for railway applications. In addition, the powerful integrated platform ensures that your data will be accurate and transmitted in real time, giving engineers the information they need to identify anomalous conditions before failures occur.
All-in-One Hardware Design Reduces Maintenance Effort • Integrates service and monitoring systems for more reliable train services • Supports C/C++ and IEC 61131-3 programming • Uses existing 2-wire cable for IP networks on refurbished trains • TCN (Train Communication Network), serial, I/O, and Ethernet are integrated in one box • Ready-to-run services for data logging, Modbus, SNMP, and CANOpen • Compact size for easy installation

Various IO Modules Rugged Design • M12 connectors • Spring-type terminal block • Screw-type terminal block • 24-110VDC Isolated Power • Dual Redundant Power Support
• 24-110 VDC DI/O • Ch-to-ch iso. DI/O • AI/O • Relay • RTC/TC • Serial • 2-wire Ethernet • PoE Switch
Integrated Control and Management Platform a Perfect Fit for Refurbishment Projects The ioPAC RTU controller not only combines serial, I/O, and Ethernet interfaces into a single device, it also supports the C/C++ and IEC 61131-3 programming languages and ready-to-run services, including data logging and email alarms. Packing all of these great features into one device simplifies system development, reduces the amount of maintenance required, and improves service and network reliability.
Port-based IP Address Assignment
Plug & Play Port-based IP Address Assignment With port-based IP address assignment, IP addresses are defined and linked to selected ports via software. Maintenance engineers do not need to configure network settings before installing devices. They just need to connect their devices to the right ports. Port-based IP address assignment reduces maintenance effort and greatly simplifies the field engineers’ workflow. Programmers also get a break since they can easily access known devices through pre-defined IP addresses.
Rugged Modular Programmable Controllers
Innovative 2-wire Ethernet Technology A refurbished train may only have a limited number of coupler poles, even when the entire existing network, which could include wiring for RS-485, CANbus, and other technologies, is removed. Moxa’s 2-wire Ethernet technology offers system integrators the option to upgrade to an IP network using the existing wiring, further reducing the cost and effort associated with other applications. In addition, 2-wire Ethernet supports Ethernet bypass functionality, ensuring that the Ethernet backbone will be available when the network on one of the carriages shuts down.

Smart I/O I MX-AOPC UA Suite
Efficient Database Uploads
With most remote data acquisition systems, during daily operations additional human resources are needed to collect data manually from remote storage devices for loading into a database. Even with remote I/O units remotely collecting data over the network, software must be developed to handle the task of converting and uploading these data logs. Moxa’s MX-AOPC UA Logger not only makes real-time data collection much easier, it also simplifies the conversion of historical data into database-ready formats. MX-AOPC UA Logger interacts directly with our MX-AOPC UA Server, working as a bridge between field data and stored databases or spreadsheets. Furthermore, the MX-AOPC client converts and uploads data logs to the central database. The MX-AOPC UA Logger can collate tags from individual Moxa RTUs or remote I/O devices into the same database or spreadsheet, freeing users from the need to manipulate data after processing.
Cohesive, Secure, Reliable Efficient SCADA Device Data Management • First OPC UA server for industrial automation supporting both push and pull communication • One-click active tag creation • Efficient database uploads
Automatic Data Updates from SD Cards Following Network Failures Seamless Connection between Device, Data, and SCADA Our value-added automation software enables active yet seamless SCADA communication, automatic data integration, and powerful, easy-to-configure control logic. This robust and easy to deploy I/O solution help customer achieve durable and collaborative operations for smart connectivity and productivity.
Faster SCADA Response
One-Click Active Tag Creation
Moxa’s MX-AOPC UA Server is extremely efficient at "pushing" event-triggered data to SCADA systems and IT databases. With the Moxa AOPC protocol built in, Moxa’s ioLogik products deliver a fast I/O response, but using less bandwidth compared to the polling architecture used by traditional OPC servers.
Traditionally, systems integrators and end-users have had to organize thousands of OPC tags using Excel worksheets to keep track of the detailed descriptions needed to represent the meaning of a tag. One-click active tag creation eliminates the headache of specifying individual target IP addresses, I/O channels, and data formats, and does away with the need to edit and import configuration files.
1. Faster I/O response times. 2. More accurate data collection than traditional pull-based architectures. 3. Instant alarms and real-time updates ensure a faster response to emergencies.
MX-AOPC UA Server lets users define readable tags on an OPC UA Server, allowing the users to know where the tag comes from based solely on the tag’s name. When monitoring similar data points at different sites, tag names can be configured to make it easy to differentiate one tag from another.
With push technology, I/O status is updated to the MX-AOPC UA Server only when an I/O status changes, a pre-configured interval is reached, or when a request is issued by a user.
MX-AOPC UA Logger provides a standard OPC interface that interacts with MX-AOPC UA Server for real-time data collection. After each network connection, MX-AOPC UA Logger will compare historical data stored on the SD cards located in individual devices with the real time data it has already stored locally, and then supplement any missing data by requesting that the RTU retransmit the lost data.
Monitor by polling or exception: Most OPC UA servers use a poll-type protocol, such as Modbus, to get data from their I/O devices. However, polling hundreds or thousands of tags is very inefficient. If both polling and exception options are available, you can determine the best approach by first categorizing device tags into one of four types and then increase the efficiency of your operation by using poll-type methods on tags that are high frequency but have non-critical urgency to update data to the SCADA system. One of the benefits of using remote I/O units is that data can be collected over a network from a central site. In an ideal operation, following a network failure remote I/O units should be able to transmit data logs that were collected while the network was offline. Moxa’s MX-AOPC UA Logger not only makes this possible, it makes it easy.
