In today’s Gospel reading we hear Jesus referring to himself as “the good shepherd.” His sheep know him, trust him, listen to him and follow him; having faith that no harm will come to them as long as they stay close to him. We reaffirmed our faith in Christ when we renewed our baptismal promises at Easter. As stewards of our relationship with Jesus Christ, are we, like the sheep , willing to listen to Jesus, follow him, trust him?

Parish Sacrificial Giving 2012

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2012 Your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal will help provide the much needed resources to thousands of individuals this year—specifically to our retired priests, our seminarians, Catholic Community Services and many others. As we face challenging economic times, be aware that some of our fellow parishioners will not be able to financially support the Appeal this year. If you are in a position to do so, please consider an increase in your gift to make up for those who cannot give. Fr. Jim is asking that everyone return a pledge card this year so that “many hands make light work”. With 100% participation by our parish families we will reach our goal—a total of $257,082 plus $50,000 for our Shoulder to Shoulder Ministry and our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society! To learn more and donate today please visit: www.seattlearchdiocese.org/Stewardship/ACA/ Donate.aspx

MARRIAGE Weddings are special and joyful times for brides and grooms, for their families and friends, and for the parish community. A wedding is a new beginning, filled with love, promises, and hope. The wedding celebration is a special and grace-filled time in our lives. The Church welcomes its members to celebrate and solemnize their marriages in the context of our prayer as Christians. Great care is taken to see that the prayer for this special moment is reverent, graceful, beautiful, and open to the movement of the Spirit of God in our midst. In this spirit, St. Michael Parish provides the tools for planning weddings in our parish. Please call the Parish Office or visit our Marriage page on the parish website at the time of your engagement to allow sufficient time to fully prepare for the Sacrament of Matrimony in the Catholic Church

“Bridge of Hope” GRIEF SUPPORT MEETINGS Are you, or someone you know, grieving? Struggling with the loss of a loved one, illness in your family, suffering with family problems, divorce, job loss, or other life issues? Whether faith brings you support while grieving or whether grief causes your faith to tremble, please join us. We gather to learn about the grief process, to support one another, and to share our thoughts and feelings, sustained by our faith and enlightened by Christ. “BRIDGE of HOPE” consists of a cycle of 8 FREE weekly meetings. Contact Benedetta at (360) 292-7143, or e-mail at [email protected] , if you wish to participate.

….and remember: Permitting yourself to honestly experience grief is an important step towards healing, both for men or women.

Welcome Neophytes! A neophyte is a beginner. Our recent beginners at our parish here at St. Michael’s are the three women who received the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. Lillian Blake, Tracey Stephens, and Maya Wharton were baptized, confirmed, and received first Eucharist that night. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin another stage of their faith journey in the Roman Catholic Church. Are you considering becoming Catholic? Our Spring Inquiry sessions are now starting on Monday evenings from 7-8:30 pm at the downtown church in gathering space room #3. All are welcome. You can find brochures with the dates of our meetings in the Good News stand. For further information, contact: Debs Pokos Dugan, Steward for RCIA at 292-7117.

The Adopt-a-Flower Bed Ministry offers a great opportunity for you, a group of friends or a family to help maintain our parish’s spectacular “first impression” landscape. Right now there are flower bed spaces available for assignment. Enthusiastic participants would inspect and maintain a space as needed on their own time schedule from April until October. Thank you for prayerfully considering this ministry. Keep reading to see what your generosity does: “The Thurston County Food bank would like to extend gratitude to your congregation for the donation of $2418 that we received in March. We are grateful for the caring concerned members of the St. Michael ‘s Church congregation and appreciate the support of our mission to feed the hungry in our community. To demonstrate how your donation made a difference in our community we would like to share a few statistics. 37% of the people we serve are on special diets that necessitate gluten free, low sugar or low salt foods. Your donation enabled us to purchase these products to help fill this need.

The Par ish Nu rs e Ministries will be having a free CPR class on Thursday, May 10th from 6-9 pm in room 2 in the gathering space. Please call 292-7104 to register.

FREE FINANCIAL EDUCATION CLASS This 8 session program is given by Enterprise for Equity starting Tuesday, May 8. To register or for more information call 360-704-3375 ext#2 or email [email protected].

SPRING CLEANING? Our Parish Saint Vincent DePaul CLOTHING BANK welcomes your donation of clothing and house wares; especially clean and gently used bedding, towels and shoes. We accept dishes, glassware, and cooking utensils. Please, no appliances larger than a microwave. The donation facility is located in the Boundary St. parking lot adjacent the Rectory Building. All donated items are given to the less fortunate members of our community at no charge. Thank you for your continuing generosity.

…Federal and local cuts to funding left fewer options for people needing assistance. In answer to this problem the Food Bank increased the number and options of client visits to provide more food for those in need. These additions and options were made possible by your continued support.” (Excerpts from a thank you letter from Robert Coit, Executive Director)

Faith Formation

Faith and Light

Catholic Knowledge Bowl

Faith and Light is a loving community that includes the intellectually disabled, their families and friends. It is an international, interdenominational organization that began with a pilgrimage of parents and their disabled children, led by Jean Vanier and Marie-Helene Mathieu, to Lourdes in 1971. Since then, 1,600 groups have sprung up in 77 countries around the globe to share friendship, pray together, and celebrate life. Faith and Light at St. Michael Parish meets on the 3rd Sunday of the month from 1:30-3:30 in room 7. All are welcome! Call Leanne : 292-7112 for more information.

June 3 Dust off the cobwebs and start brushing up on your knowledge of the Faith. Plan to participate in the first ever Catholic Knowledge Bowl at St. Michael Parish. This will be a fun time to meet with friends and other families and test your knowledge of our Catholic Faith. A special ‘Life Line’ guest will be on hand to help you if you get stumped.

“To love someone is to show to them their beauty, their worth and their importance.” Jean Vanier

JOURNEY DEEP INTO THE FAITH!

CATHOLICISM

the

series

is

here!

You won't want to miss this engaging 5 week series of CATHOLICISM! Fr. Robert Barron created this groundbreaking program as a thematic presentation of what Catholics believe and why, so all adults can come to a deeper understanding of the Catholic Faith. Not a video lecture, Church history or scripture study, this engaging and interesting formational program uses the art, architecture, literature, music and all the treasures of the Catholic tradition to illuminate the timeless teachings of the Church. The CATHOLICISM Study Program presents the strong, ecclesial dimension of the Catholic Faith – God’s revelation through Jesus Christ and His Church. It is comprehensive and faithful, appropriate for those who just finished RCIA, adults seeking more, and mature teenagers and tweens. The series will run on Wednesdays, May 9 - June 6, from 7-8:30 PM in the Multi Purpose Room. Childcare available upon rsvp. There is no need to pre-register. For more information, contact Marriann Tefft at 292-7123.

FAITH, Next Sunday, May 5 So what makes us Catholic? Come engage the question with other adults as we explore the topic with Thomas Groome as our guide. Breakfast served after the 9:30 Mass, followed by breakout catechetical sessions for adults and children. FAITH is the parish’s family religious education ministry open to all adults and families with children preschool age through 5th grade.
