St. John the Baptist

The Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King

Season of Promise, Season of Hope “In the cold dark of winter, I found within myself an eternal spring.” I do not recall who wrote those words, or even if I am remembering them perfectly, but the author’s sentiment has stayed in my mind over many years. For me they capture the season of Advent, which begins next week. In New England, Advent always begins as the days are getting darker and colder. Sometimes I wonder what it’s like to celebrate Advent in the Southern Hemisphere where the opposite is happening! Advent brings hope through the promises we hear in the scriptures, from Isaiah, through John the Baptist, and culminating in the words and the person of Jesus Christ. Although weather wise this is not my favorite time of year, I am very fond of this liturgical season. Here at Saint John’s people devoted to our worship help us enter into the hope and promise of Advent through careful attention to such details as color and sound. Let me invite you to join us in any or all of the special events that make it worthwhile for you and me to leave the comfort of our homes to find a deeper warmth in our parish church. To begin with, there is simply the beauty of our Advent liturgies every Sunday. Each Mass begins with the lighting of the advent candles. We invite you and members of your family to volunteer to do this at Mass. There is a sign up sheet or you can call Deacon Leo Martin at the parish center. Each Advent Sunday concludes with sung Evening Prayer. We sing psalms, listen to scripture and hear a personal reflection by a member of the community. The quiet, subdued tone of Advent is broken by one very special feast that speaks to all of us who call ourselves “Americans” of one sort or another: whether we are citizens of the United States or Canada (North America) or one of the many countries of Latin America. If you haven’t heard the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, you should. You will be amazed by the miracle which still intrigues both the believer and the skeptic who gaze upon the tilma, a peasant’s cactus cloth shawl that holds an image of the Virgin. Come, join our Hispanic parishioners on Sunday, December 9, as Bishop Emilio Allué celebrates the 11:30 Mass. To help us enter into the Mass, some parts will be celebrated in English. After the Mass there will be a memorable meal and mariachi music in the school gym. Tables will be reserved for us “English speakers” so please join us. If you are like me you haven’t even begun thinking about Christmas cards and shopping but let me ask you not to forget what should really matter to us at this time of year: our Savior’s birth, the solemnity of Christmas. At the beginning of Advent you will receive our Advent-Christmas card with a schedule of all our Masses and celebrations. We will also print it in our bulletin and post in our website in case we do not have your address. I suggest you post it on your refrigerator or wherever you will look at it. Most importantly, take time in the midst of pre-Christmas craziness to join us as we remember the reason for the season: the Lord Jesus. He has come in time; it is his birth we remember at Christmas. He comes to us when we gather in his name; it is the Eucharist which makes him truly present to us. And he will come again in glory; this is the promise which we await at the end of time, his promise that gives us hope for our everyday life.

The Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King
