PASTORS CORNER Lent is upon us, and once again we follow Jesus into the desert for 40 days of fasting and prayer. Our Lenten journey helps teach us much needed spiritual discipline. Most of the religions of the world observe fasting. In Islam, it is an entire month, Ramadan, when they take nothing during the daylight hours. Some Buddhist take no food after noontime. For Hindus, it may be a certain day of the week. Jews fast six days of the year. Mormons observe Fast Sunday each month, and the Bahia faith fast for one month. Fasting and hunger strikes are also powerful political tools. India’s Mohandas Gandhi undertook several long fasts. Cesar Chavez went on a fast for 25 days. It takes real discipline to follow our faith. Fasting - and Lent - help us to be stronger. Jesus inevitably encountered obstacles when he proclaimed God’s kingdom among us. Mark’s Gospel tells us, “The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for 40 days, tempted by Satan.” Any movement from God’s Spirt always runs head-on into a movement from Satan. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke will later provide us with three specific temptations that Jesus faced in the desert. Mark’s Gospel, on the other hand, leaves it up to his readers to fill in the blanks. Each of us will face different and unique roadblocks when we commit ourselves to carrying our God’s plan for us. Be alert. Last Wednesday we began the Season of Lent being signed with ashes. Our being marked on our foreheads with the ashes, in the form of a cross, was a public declaration that we were willing to enter this penitential season. What if you missed Ash Wednesday. No problem - start today! To do nothing to make this grace filled season special is depriving yourself an opportunity to grow even closer to our Lord. During the Season of Lent you have many opportunities to grow in your relationship with the Lord. We have two daily Masses offered. Why not come to one of those Masses a couple of times a week. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered each Saturday or by appointment during the week. We will also be having a Penance Service the week before Holy Week. The University Series is beginning which allows you an opportunity to enrich yourself with the different presentations that are being offered. Each Friday of Lent the Stations are being celebrated. The annual Lenten Fish Fry is happening again (grilled cheese for those who don’t like fish like myself). Our relationship with Christ grows when we spend time with others that share our faith. Our Lenten journey is not just a private affair but a journey that we are taking together. That is why we begin Lent with a very public marking of the cross on our foreheads with ashes. I wish to thank all those who have already responded to the 2015 Together in Mission Campaign. If we can all work together we can certainly meet our assigned goal of $123,900.00 this year. Again, I wish to reiterate, that participating in Together in Mission is not so much about helping the Archdiocese as much as it is about helping Churches minister better to our brothers and sisters in financially challenged areas in our Archdiocese. I might suggest to you making your donation your “alms” giving during this Lenten Season. May the graces of this Lenten time be multiplied many times upon you all. Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Did You Know? Child abduction: taking action A recent study of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® revealed that 83% of children who escaped their would-be abductors kicked, yelled, and pulled away to escape. Teach your child these and other abduction prevention skills, such as: Asking for permission before changing plans; asking for permission before approaching or getting into vehicles with anyone; recognizing the tricks would-be abductors use, such as offering rides or asking for help; telling a trusted adult whenever anything or anyone makes them uncomfortable. When it comes to keeping your child safe, YOU are your child’s best resource. The more you know about abduction prevention, the better protected your child will be. Use your knowledge to make conversations about personal safety a regular part of your family’s routine. For more information, visit: http://www.kidsmartz.org/ ChildAbduction.

Saint Vincent de Paul "In today's Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations of wealth, power and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Your almsgiving in the poor box, will help the needy to celebrate the grace of God's love this Easter." 6

Lent 2015 Abstinence on all the Fridays of Lent, and on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. No meat may be eaten on days of abstinence (Chicken is meat). Catholics 14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat. The seriously ill, pregnant and nursing mothers, are exempt. 2) Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means having only one full meal to maintain one's strength. Two smaller, meatless and penitential meals are permitted according to one's needs, but they should not together equal the one full meal. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Catholics from age 18 through age 59 are bound to fast. Again, the seriously ill, pregnant and nursing mothers, are exempt.
