02 First Sunday of Advent

November 27, 2016

From the Pastor’s Desk THE NEW LITURGICAL YEAR A—we begin our new liturgical year as always with a season of Advent. “Advent has a two-fold character, for it is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and likewise a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. For these two seasons, Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight” (Universal Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, 39). The purpose of Advent is to help us prepare for Christmas and the important thing is to prepare for the second coming of Christ. The first thing the Church tells us is the Second Coming of Christ may be closer than we think. On the first Sunday of Advent, the Church focuses on the Second Coming of Christ as Jesus says in the Gospel: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” How do we prepare ourselves when Christ is coming the second time? How do we prepare ourselves to welcome Christ coming into our hearts, into our family and into our world. We are called to "be vigilant at all times" since we don't know when the Lord will come again. We have 24 days to do many things. Can we make this year that we do more than eating, drinking, shopping, writing cards, decorating and opening presents? Can we prepare a place within ourselves for the Lord? PARISH ACTIVITIES DURING ADVENT SEASON In order for us to make this Advent Season more meaningful, please join us for the following events: PARISH GIVING TREE Gift tags available on tree in back of church Gifts are due back weekend of December 17 & 18 EVENING OF ADVENT REFLECTION Presented by Todd Williamson Office of Divine Worship Tuesday, November 29, 7:00 p.m. in Church, all are welcome!EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Friday, December 2 9:00 am-7:45 pm with Benediction in chapel DIVINE MERCY HOLY HOUR Monday, December 5, 7:00 pm in church ADVENT/CHRISTMAS CONCERT Sunday, December 4, at 1:30 pm in church OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE Monday, December 12, 7:00 pm in church COOKIE WALK Sunday, December 11, after 7:30, 9:00 & 11:00 am Masses in the gym CONFESSIONS Saturday, December 17, 8:30 am - 9:00 am, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm Polish Confessions available from 3:30 - 4:30 pm SIMBANG GABI Saturday, December 17, 5:00 pm Mass, Reception to follow in the gym PARISH RECONCILIATION SERVICE Monday, December 19, 7:00 pm. Let us open our hearts and mind to let the Lord enter into our lives and let us use this season of advent as the opportunity for us to prepare well for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. May the spirit of Advent help us to prepare well for the beginning of the New Liturgical Year! May God always bless you and bless St. Celestine Family! In Prayers, Fr. Paul

First Sunday of Advent 05

BE PREPARED

Be prepared. It’s that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can’t escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ON UNEXPECTED MAIL, AND ADVENT Copyright 2016 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

So I got a big pile of mail through the slot several months ago. I recognized the bills right away, and the grocery coupons, and--back then--the unending assortment of political campaign propaganda telling me why I should vote for this candidate or that. The mailing that caught my eye, though, was a cream-colored envelope that came in upside down onto the floor. In truth, I thought it was an invitation, so I went for it first. It was an invitation of sorts, I suppose. From the Neptune Society. With “Free pre-paid cremation details inside.” I chuckled to myself and set it aside and kind of forgot about it until a few months later when another piece of mail came through the slot. This one--from the National Cremation Service--offered the same free, pre-paid cremation details inside. Uh…is somebody trying to tell me something? The Neptune Society letter began with “Dear John - For a variety of reasons, more and more people are choosing to plan for a memorialized cremation over traditional funeral arrangement--and the numbers are increasing every year!” then told me why cremation makes sense (“much less expensive” was near the top of the list). The National Cremation Service letter began with “Dear John - Trust is such a short word and yet it takes such a long time to earn. We trust ourselves that we made the right decisions when we needed to…But, sometimes we don’t trust ourselves to make a decision regarding pre-planning for final arrangements because we don’t have all the facts.” Then they let (traditional funeral cost) facts “speak for themselves.” And both agencies followed the same script in giving me a card to complete and mail in to maybe win a free cremation service: Last month’s free cremation winner was… Cool! While making no offer of free cremation, the readings for this First Sunday of Advent speak to us of preparedness just as surely as the letters from the cremation agencies do. In the Old Testament text, for example, Isaiah envisions all nations streaming toward God’s mountain “that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths.” Per the prophet as well, “He shall judge between the nations, and impose terms on many peoples.” We get more of the (preparatory) same in Paul’s letter to the Romans. “Brothers and sisters: You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed…Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.” And per Jesus himself in the Gospel, “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared…” I chuckled when the cremation invitations came in through the mail slot. I’m still chuckling, in fact. But I do not take lightly the larger message. And such is always the message of this joyful season as we anticipate the coming-and the return coming--of the Christ.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Before the Second Vatican Council in the mid-1960s, Advent had a strong penitential tone, reminiscent of Lent. From as long ago as the fourth century, some Christians began a solemn fast on St. Martin’s Day, November 11. This “Saint Martin’s Lent” extended all the way to Christmas, and was widely followed in the dioceses of France and Germany, and in the Middle Ages in England. Fasting was required, and dancing and similar activities were banned for the duration. The fast had a social function, too, assuring that the winter food supplies would stretch into spring. At the Second Vatican Council, some bishops argued that a revival of the long winter’s fast would give the Church a chance to establish the message and themes of the Incarnation long before the holiday hubbub took hold. This proposal didn’t pass, and Advent emerged as a four-week period of reflection, expectant waiting, and joyful preparation for the coming of the Lord. The season has two principal phases, with the first beginning this Sunday. The second phase commences on December 17, when the liturgy begins to unfold the story of the Savior’s coming. Interestingly, the Eastern Church maintains a strongly penitential note in Advent, which is called “Winter Lent,” “The Nativity Fast,” or “Christmas Lent,” and has laws forbidding people to absent themselves from liturgy from December 17 onward. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

First Sunday of Advent 07

Some Thoughts on Advent & Eucharist Now that fall is nearing an end and as we prepare for the winter season, we are also reminded that this is a time of change. The day light grows shorter, the dark nights are longer and in the Church we change from the season of Ordinary time to the season of waiting and Advent. This year we are blessed to have Todd Williamson from the Office of Divine Worship come and share some of his thoughts on this subject. This talk is open to all parishioners. All Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors and Ushers are especially encouraged to attend this gathering in order to fulfill the Archdiocese requirement of a yearly day of renewal and catechesis for these ministries. So join us on Tuesday, November 29th, at 7:00pm in the church. Give yourself a hour or so to relax and refresh from all of the hustle and bustle that you do to prepare for Christmas.

TIME OF PREPARATION

This life is the time of our preparation for our future state. Our souls will continue for ever what we make them in this world. —John Tillotson, Archbishop of Canterbury

GIVING TREE

Again this year, Saint Celestine Parish is asked to come together to respond to the needs of one of the poorest parishes in the archdiocese, St. Malachy/Precious Blood. Your kindness and response made Christmas possible for so many families that would not have had Christmas last year. We will again have our “Giving Tree” and help the people of Saint Malachy/ Precious Blood Parish. Fr. Matt, the pastor of this parish, has given us family names and lists of some items that they would like for Christmas. Some families are large, some are small. Join up with another parishioner and take one of these larger families so they too can have a special Christmas. When was the last time someone you know was in need of a pair of socks or laundry detergent and asked for these items as a Christmas gift? I know that many of you are also struggling at this time, but those of us who are blessed and have a little extra, please try to help out. I have also broken down some of the families so that if you can’t take on a whole family, maybe you can get an item or two from these other tags. The tree will be up in the back of the church and the names available the weekend of November 26 & 27. All gifts should be returned to the church by Sunday, December 18. The gifts will be picked up later that afternoon by St. Malachy/Precious Blood Parish.
