Dear Walkerton Friends My wife, Ina and I want to thank you all for making us so welcome during the Bicentennial Torch Parade on Oc. 7 and 8. It was a unique experience to be among people who all knew how to correctly pronounce my last name. Being able to carry the torch for my father, Harold Urey, was a great honor and I thank both Walkerton and the State of Indiana for making it possible. Mark Maudlin the principal of Urey Middle School permitted me to address the students and the school and I enjoyed recalling him and his life for their benefit. I like to think they enjoyed hearing about my dad almost as much as I enjoyed recalling the most important person in my early life. They asked such good questions! Clearly they are in the hands of a good group of teachers. And I love the gifts – especially the bear made by Kim. It was such fun to ride on the Fire Department’s antique 1927 Ford fire truck. What a beauty and meeting a member of the department who is still active at 80 showed me again the townspeople’s commitment to civic duty. While I proudly rode in honor of my dad, Phil Buckminster and his wife and mother-in-law shepherded Ina around and kept her company. Special thanks go out to the staff of the Urey Middle School cafeteria for a great hog roast and especially the light-as-air cupcakes baked by Tatiana Schalliol. On Saturday, when we were in the cafeteria and looking lost, Town Council member, Kathryn Tiede-Chrapliwy, took us under her wing, guided us to a lunch table, and shared stories with Ina. Another shout out goes to the staff of the Walkerton Historical Society, who took the time to guide us to special documents about the Urey Family’s time in Walkerton including directing us to the house that may have been where my dad was born! The town showed me all the attributes my father said he learned from his Indiana family; honesty, compassion, kindness, curiosity, hard work, integrity, love and a strong belief in the American dream. Both my wife Ina and I are the children of big cities, Walkerton showed us just how great life in small-town America can be. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, John Urey

Don’t Overlook Long-term Care Costs

How much money will you need in retirement? To arrive at an estimate, you should consider various factors, such as where you’ll live, how much you plan to travel, and so on. Not surprisingly, you’ll also need to think about health care costs, which almost always rise during retirement. But there’s one area you might overlook: long-term care. Should you be concerned about these costs? In a word, yes. Expenses for long-term care – which can include receiving assistance at home as well as prolonged care in a facility – can be surprisingly expensive. Consider the following statistics, taken from the 2016 Cost of Care Study issued by Genworth, an insurance company: The average annual cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $92,000. And in some places, particularly major metropolitan areas, the cost is considerably higher. The average annual cost for full-time services of an in-home health care aide is more than $46,000. These costs are certainly daunting. Of course, you might think that you won’t have to worry about them, because you won’t ever need any type of long-term care, particularly if you’ve always been in good health and your family has no history of later-in-life cognitive impairment. However, the odds may not always be in your favor, because almost 70% of people turning age 65 will need some kind of assistance or long-term care at some point in their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Given the costs of long-term care, and the possibility that you might really need this care, how can you prepare for the costs? Things may change in the future, but at this point, you really can’t count much on government programs to help pay for long-term care. Medicare typically pays for only a small percentage of these costs, and, to be eligible for Medicaid, you must have limited income and assets. In fact, you might need to “spend down” some of your assets to qualify for Medicaid long-term care services. Obviously, this is not an attractive choice, particularly if you’d like to someday “leave something behind” to your family or favorite charity. Consequently, you need to look at your options for paying for long-term care – just in case. You could earmark a certain percentage of your investment portfolio to cover long-term care costs; if you never need this care, you can simply use the money to pay for other areas of your retirement or for other purposes, such as charitable gifts or financial support to your grown children or grandchildren. Or, as an alternative, you might want to work with a financial professional, who can recommend a strategy specifically designed to help you address long-term care costs. The marketplace in this area has evolved rapidly in recent years, so you should be able to find a solution that is both affordable and effective. Keep in mind, though, that the earlier you purchase a long-term care solution, the more economical it will likely be for you. In any case, don’t delay your planning for long-term care. Knowing that you’re protected against potentially catastrophic costs can make your retirement years less stressful for you and your family. Veterans Day The American Legion Family Post 189 would like to express our sincere appreciation for the men and women who served in the US Armed Forces. Thank you for serving this great country, for protecting us, and for the security we have and feel here at home. We know you sacrificed much for your country and all of us. And though you may no longer wear the uniform, we know you’re always on call to serve and protect the freedom and security of the United States of America. The American Legion Family supports and honors the sacrifice of those who served by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. We invite everyone to pause on Veterans Day to remember those who have fought for our freedoms. Thank you to all who have so bravely protected us. We invite all to Millers Merry Manor on Friday, November 11, 2016 for a program to honor and thank the Veterans who call Millers their home, and honor and thank all Veterans. Patriotic music will begin at 10:15 am with the program starting at 10:30. The message will be delivered by Bill Bouse. Please join us for this well deserved tribute.
