Senior Pastor, Bethel AME Church Baltimore, MD THE REV. DR. FRANK MADISON REID, III is an internationally-known leader, a preeminent power speaker, a cutting-edge thinker, as well as a motivator who encourages and equips people to rebuild their broken lives and communities. Born on June 29, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Bishop Frank M. Reid, Jr., and Adrenis Carter Reid, he was the first born son of four children. Three daughters were born to this union, Vee (deceased), Vanessa, and Stephanie. The family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1956 where Dr. Reid was raised and attended public schools. He graduated from high school in 1969. A brilliant but late blooming student, Dr. Reid took a year, 1969-70, to attend the acclaimed Yale Transitional Year Program (TYP). In that program, he began to fulfill his academic and leadership potential and was later admitted to some of the top colleges in the nation. Dr. Reid graduated from Yale in 1974 with a B.A. in History and African American Studies. While at Yale, he served as the moderator and president of the Black Student Alliance (BSA) and had the opportunity to meet some of the top leaders of the world. During his college years, Dr. Reid answered his call to ministry and preached his trial sermon in August of 1971 at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church in Washington, D.C. When he received his license to preach, he became the 5th generation of his family to become a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. I In September 1974, Dr. Reid began his studies at the Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1975, Dr. Reid took a sabbatical to travel to Monrovia, Liberia in West Africa where he taught at Monrovia College and was Co-Pastor of the Historic Eliza Turner A.M.E. Church. He returned to Harvard in the fall of 1976 where he received his Master of Divinity Degree in 1978. Since 1978, Dr. Reid has served congregations in Charlotte, North Carolina, Greater Bethel A.M.E. (1978-80); in Los Angeles, California, Ward A.M.E. Church (1980-88); and currently in Baltimore, Maryland, the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church. In the midst of a successful ministry, Dr. Reid became a part of the first class of Samuel DeWitt Proctor Doctoral Fellows at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated with a Doctor of Ministry Degree in 1990. Dr. Reid is a servant leader whose ministry of over 30 years has been on the cutting edge of positive change. As an intellectual leader, he has consistently brought the top authors and thinkers into the communities that he has served: Taylor Branch, Cornel West, Michael Eric Dyson, Sonia Sanchez, Haki Madhubuti, Terri McMillan, BeBe Moore Campbell are just a few of the authors who have spoken at the churches he has pastored. As a community leader, Dr. Reid has had Bishop Desmond Tutu, Dr. Marian Wright Edelman, Dick Gregory, Johnetta Cole, Senator Barbara Mikulski, Congressman Elijah Cummings, Gov. Robert Ehrlich, Mayor Martin O’Malley, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, Minister Louis Farrakhan, and Imam Wallace Dean Muhummad to speak at or visit the churches he has pastored. Also, the mayor and two deputy mayors of Baltimore City, the Comptroller of Baltimore City, and a Maryland State Delegate are members of Bethel A.M.E. Church. As a Christian pastor, some of the greatest preachers and teachers in the world have taught at churches that Dr. Reid has pastored: Bishop T.D. Jakes, Bishop Sun Do Kim, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, Bishop Vinton R. Anderson, Bishop Noel Jones, Pastor Paula White, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Bishop Eddie Long, Co-Pastor Deborah Morton, Dr. William Watley, and Dr. Leonard Sweet, to name a few. Under Dr. Reid’s leadership, “The Bethel Outreach of Love” Broadcast was the first African Methodist Episcopal Church to have an international TV broadcast. For over 10 years, the broadcast was on Black Entertainment Television (BET). The broadcast has also been on the Armed Forces Network, and is now seen internationally in Europe on Revelation TV and UC-TV, nationally on The Word Network, and regionally on WB-TV. As a best-selling author who has written important books and articles, Dr. Reid is a much sought out author, teacher, preacher, and motivational speaker. Dr. Reid is married to Marlaa Hall Reid, a talented woman in her own right; they have been married for over 33 years. They have two daughters, FranShon and Faith, and one son, Shane. Today we celebrate DISCIPLE GRADUATION! We have 34 graduates from Disciple I, II, III and IV, who have completed this 32-34 curriculum of in-depth and transforming Bible study program. The DISCIPLE Bible Study program is a disciplined study of the Bible designed by the United Methodist denomination in 1986 to give participants a deeper understanding of God’s Word. It is also aimed at developing strong Christian leaders and local churches through the regular in-depth study of Scripture by its members. The purpose of the DISCIPLE Bible Study program is summarized in the words of Ephesians 4:12: “to equip the saints for the work of the ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” All DISCIPLE classes offered at Holman follow the curriculum developed by the United Methodist Church. The DISCIPLE Bible Study program was first introduced to the Holman community in 2001 and is open to HUMC members and other interested persons from other churches and the community. Each program year follows the traditional education calendar and runs from September to June. Each program level consists of a 32-34 week study and a commitment of 3-4 hours of independent study each week in preparation for the weekly group meetings. The study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time and emphasizes the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. The DISCIPLE Bible Study program draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of each participant and group discussion each week to aid understanding of the Bible. Through the DISCIPLE Bible Study program persons are strengthened in their faith and guided into service and ministry. This program helps in developing biblically nourished leadership and Christian discipleship in our church and community. It also stimulates Christian renewal, growth, vitality and stewardship for the glory of God. Our Disciple Bible Study program is coordinated by Beverly Davis and Anslyene Lloyd. We give thanks for their leadership.

If you make my word your home you will indeed be my disciples. – John 8:31

THAT'S 30! This is how journalists signify that a story is finished. This also applies to notices for graduated high school seniors and continuing college students to contact [email protected] for the type-on 2016 Alen Henry Memorial Scholarships application. Successful applicants can get a $1000 check in his/her name. It's imperative for those who have applied, and those yet to, to finalize ALL required criteria. By the way, the deadline (a journalistic term) just happens to be June 30. That's 30! and a wrap. THE FOCUS POINT STUDY GROUP is doing a faith formation series based on viewing movies (secular, biblical, true stories) that serve as examples for our daily walk in living as followers of Jesus Christ. In the past few weeks we have viewed and shared reflections on Woodlawn, Secretariat, Amazing Grace, Selma. This Monday (6/6) we will view Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. These films have encouraged our journey. On JUNE 13, we will be viewing the movie War Room, and beginning June 20, we will be studying the curriculum based on the movie, viewing snippets, having discussions (with homework to complete between group sessions). Please look for our table in L.L. White Hall as we will have a sign-up sheet ready for those wanting to participate in this series. The sign-ups will help us determine how many workbooks to order for each individual. The books are $10.00 each. The Focus Point Small Group meets on Monday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 pm, but for the movie series we will be extending our time to 9:30 pm. NEXT SUNDAY WE CELEBRATE OUR GRADUATES! We will recognize those who have culminated to the next school level, and will celebrate our high school and college graduates. If you have not submitted your information, this is your last chance. “ARE YOU LIVING FOR CHRIST?” GALATIANS 2:15-21

Rev. Kelvin Sauls 11:00 A.M.

“THE YEAR OF GREATER WORKS” JOHN 14:1-14

Rev. Dr. Frank M. Reid, III 

Do you ever stop and consider who you are living for? What is that one thing that gets you up in the morning excited about the day’s prospects? I’ve often heard a certain phrase iterated differently, but basically has the idea that “We only have one life, we need to live it to its fullest!” Man that sounds so right on, but what does it mean? Is your identity and ability enabled by a complete identification with Christ? Is your activity and capability a demonstration that Christ lives in you? We live for Christ when we open ourselves to receive and experience God's love. Moreover, we live for Christ when we respond to, and enact God's love. A living relationship with, and life-giving partnership with God moves us beyond "peer-pleasing religion.” Living for Jesus Christ is a purpose-driven life guided by vital & victorious faith in the Son of God.
