To God’s Awesome Community of Faith, It is March already!!! It seems we were just saying Merry Christmas and we are already about ready to say Happy Easter. Can somebody tell me where the time is going? This month is going to be a very busy one. The men will continue with their Lenten breakfasts on Saturdays and New Horizons will host the last breakfast of the Lenten season on March 19th. The New Horizons Praise team will provide the worship experience and your pastor will bring the message for the morning. We are going to need the help of those who have great breakfast casserole recipes to make several breakfast casseroles and other breakfast items to be served. We pray that if we keep the breakfast simple that we will have a very successful meal for the Madison county community. I’m looking for our men to shine with their awesome service to God and the community. I want to thank those who helped and participated with the REVIVE Prayer Rally and the Engage Day last month. They were both great successes. I also want to thank those who are holding our church up in prayer during our monthly 12 hour prayer vigils. I’ve heard the church that prays together to God, stays together with the help of God. I wish that there were more people who signed up to help us pray for some major needs of our church. If there are some who are willing to fast with me during our 12 hour prayer vigils that would be great also. Maybe with the break in the weather more will sign up for our next one on Thursday March 31st from 9am to 9pm. We usually will pray on the last Friday of the month, but this month that happens to be Good Friday and there are several events already planned for that day. And speaking of Good Friday, New Horizons is hosting the One Church Fellowship Good Friday service March 25th at 7:00 pm. If you want to experience an evening of good preaching and singing by a 50-60 person Mass Choir make sure you get to church that evening early because I have heard through the grapevine that there will be standing room only that night. Your pastor is preaching a little bit that night also. There is also a community Good Friday service at 12 noon which will be held at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, 2124 Cedar St, Anderson, IN 46016. I’ve been talking to the Lord a great deal about how can I help motivate the worshippers of New Horizons to be willing and ready to serve within the ministry of caring for and teaching children about Jesus. When we began looking at who we wanted to encourage attending New Horizons it was young adults and young families with children. If it is the younger families we want to serve, we must have the resources ready and in place to serve the families exceptionally well. The hard part is that this kind of ministry takes people who are willing to get out of their comfort zone and volunteer to serve in Christ’s ministry to families and children (even if it is an inconvenience).

I continue to pray for the Lord to move within the hearts our congregation. New Horizons seems to be stuck within the 90 / 10 Principle which is 90% of the work of the church is being done by 10% of the people. That is not fair to the 10% who are working their fingers to the bone for the Lord, because they are making it so that the 90% of the folks are not able to receive that same kind of blessing that the 10% receive and the 10% also unfortunately get burned out. I am going to need to find the time somewhere to complete my 11 week full time CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) requirement during the summer and one last 3 hour class for my Master of Divinity equivalent for ordination. This means that I am going to be in need of some assistance especially here at church. There may be some needs with our family’s care depending upon what Reggie’s test results are. I am really going to need folks to step up and volunteer to be the fruitful body of Christ. I know people love it when they are directly asked, but I don’t know all of your gifts and graces. This is something I will have to remedy with our planning and visioning. I can’t wait until the time comes that we are trying to figure out how we are going to get folks down to annual Conference for my ordination when it finally comes. I will then be able to be a full time pastor who is compensated accordingly instead of a full-time pastor who isn’t fully compensated. I know there will be a great payday in heaven one day. Come on y’all, let’s make some disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of Anderson and the world. I continue to thank you all so very much for your patience and prayers during this time transition with the health issues of my family. My plate remains extremely full, however we know God is in complete control. I daily thank God Almighty for placing me here in this prepared vineyard with awesome folks who love the Lord. I daily thank God Almighty for placing me here in this prepared vineyard with awesome folks who love the Lord. I continue daily ask God for wisdom, patience and strength so I may be able to continue to guide, serve you and work as hard as I humanly can to be the lead pastor you truly deserve as growing Christians. I’m working extra hard to make sure you have the kind of pastor that will lead this church to do the Kingdom building that Christ requires. The Kirkland family loves you all so very much! We are so happy to be here with you in relationship, ministry, service and worship.

Moving Forward in Christ,

Pastor Gina Kirkland

RADICAL HOSPITALITY Most of us should be aware there is a volunteer sign up list on the east wall of the Narthex/Lobby at the end of the refreshment line/welcome center. This list gets very few visitors-as with other volunteer lists. A list will be there thru March. We would like the list completed for the year— dream on!? If you will volunteer over March and April and would be willing to help again, place a 1, 2, or 3 in parenthesis after your name and we will spread your service over the year. In April, we will finish the year’s schedule and publish it. We know this is not without potential problems. There will be conflicts that arise. They can be handled by two people exchanging dates or contacting the coordinator. A few people have been doing more than their share. There are those who have felt unable to do the service and have established a fund to help anyone who would like financial assistance. Just mention this to the coordinator confidentially. Remember we need simple service. Feasts are discouraged and not needed! The Inlows make the coffee and obtain paper supplies that are needed. There are those who bring unscheduled supplies. It helps but it’s hard to plan if you don’t know what’s coming. There are 3 pages on the bulletin board with more information. This will be updated and distributed with the completed schedule. Thank you for helping out and passing along your suggestions and ideas!! Dick Hildreth, Coordinator (378-4459 or (cell)208-0876)

YOUTH NEWS In February, two of our youth participated in the Revive Encounter Day. Kim, Richla, and a gentleman from The Rock church had the opportunity to show love to a man in need standing on a corner near Wal-Mart by taking him to breakfast and finding out a little of his story. Nakyah was able to join another team who found people at the library to share God’s love with. Revive has challenged our youth (and youth leader) to step out of our comfort zones and spread the Gospel. It dawns on me that Gospel is supposed to mean Good News, but how many of us treat it as Good News? I think too often we (myself included) are afraid to share it and miss opportunities God gives us. Our Valentine’s party took place on a very cold, snowy Valentine’s Day, yet God still blessed it with 6 children, 4 youth, and 3 adults to celebrate love by eating and playing games. Parents were able to take advantage of this opportunity to go out on a date. There are still opportunities for you to get involved with the youth. I have highlighted some in both the January and February newsletters. We are particularly looking for people willing to host us for one portion of the progressive dinner. The Birts said they would participate, but we are looking for a couple of other places to go as well. We would like to schedule this event for some time in April instead of March to give a little more time for people to volunteer. Also, the youth council will meet March 6 right after Sunday School. If you are interested in this opportunity, please let me know so I can plan for the appropriate number. Childcare and lunch will be provided. Our March Schedule: March 5—Bishop’s Youth Rally in Noblesville March 6—Game Night March 13—“Risen” Movie March 18—Winter Jam March 20—Hobby Night March 27—Easter Sunday—TBA -Kim Kerr (765) 623-1766 [email protected]

Missions Our missions moment for March is SOS, Sowers of Seeds. Susanne will be sharing with us what they do and how we can pray for them. They work with counseling people who need help with physical and chemical abuse. Continue to pray for persecuted Christians and those who are imprisoned. Also God has laid on Franklin Graham to go to all of the capitals of America and pray for our land. 2 Sam. 24:25 says the “The Lord was moved by prayer for the land.” March 15th he will be at Denver, CO, Santa Fe New Mexico the 16th, Phoenix, AZ the 18th, Salt Lake City ,Utah the 29th, Carson City, NE the 30th, and Sacramento, CA on the 31st. Thousand have been coming to pray. We need to pray so much for our country. Speaking about prayer, please sign up monthly to pray on the last Friday of the month. When we become a praying church, I know things will begin to happen.

Walk a Mile in My Shoes New Horizons had 13 members who braved the frigid weather on February 13th to help support the Christian Center. Thanks to all who sponsored the walkers and gave to the Red JOY Jars to help bring awareness to the plight of our homeless and hurting neighbors in Madison County. We raised over $350.00.

RISK TAKING MISSION AND SERVICE During the month of February, we focused on Valentine’s Day and love and friendship. Our classes especially loved celebrating with their Valentine’s Day parties! We also learned about our one true Valentine, Jesus. You could tell love was in the air during these two weeks as we enjoyed dressing up, creating special crafts, lots of different types of sensory exploration, and of course sharing Valentines with all of our friends. We closed out the month of February with two weeks of Dr. Seuss in celebration of his upcoming birthday. We really enjoyed the chance to be wacky and wild as we stepped into the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss with many different stories. Some of our classes even enjoyed the chance to reenact these stories. During this unit we enjoyed a special meal of green eggs and ham. Many of us decided that we would not eat them at school. We are looking forward to warmer weather with the month of March and working towards our Easter celebration following our rain and rainbows unit in observance of St. Patrick’s Day. Be sure to come visit the childcare and see all of the exciting things happening as we anticipate spring and all it brings. In the February newsletter, we shared some ways for you to get involved with the childcare, ONE OF NEW HORIZONS GREATEST MINISTRIES. A huge THANK YOU to all who have answered and stepped up to be involved! If you have yet to be a part of this ministry, I am including our list of ways to be involved again. We would love your help in making our program one of the premiere ministries in Anderson.  Volunteer to host a children’s chapel service on Tuesdays at 9:45 where we listen, we sing, and we pray.  Volunteer to be a prayer partner. If you would like to be a prayer partner for a specific family or team member in the childcare, please see Karoline Sheets or Marianne Dollar; and they can give you a specific family or team member to pray for. We believe in the power of prayer, and I hear families and staff alike tell me each day, “Please just pray for me.” How simple is this?  Volunteer to cut out items for teachers. Our teachers have started a file of things that need to be cut out for art projects, games, or upcoming activities. If you have a little extra time and can help out with this it would be greatly appreciated and free up some time for teachers to spend with their students. This is an easy task that can be done at home and dropped off when you are finished.  Lend a helping hand. It seems each day that the transition between lunchtime and naptime is the busiest. Each of our teachers at some point or another during this time wishes that she had an extra pair of hands. Be that pair of hands. You can help children wash hands after they eat their lunch or even help teachers gather up their plates to return to the kitchen. If you are available around noon during the week this may seem like a small thing, but it is a huge thing to our team members.  If you would like to spend some time holding a baby in the infant classroom or reading a story to a group of children in their classroom, you can see Karoline Sheets or Marianne Dollar for a time that would work with our class schedules.  If you have the gift of being a seamstress. Please see Karoline Sheets. Some of our teachers have some items on their wish list that you could help with. Or perhaps you’re a great carpenter and would like a project. We can always help with that. There are also several projects that we would love to have the resources to complete, but as often is true, daily needs take precedence over some dreams. If you would like to sponsor a dream for one of our classrooms please contact Karoline Sheets or Marianne Dollar. There are so many ways to be a part of this ever growing ministry. We truly appreciate all that our church family does to support us on a daily basis. We are truly shaping the future of our community and nation.

United Methodist Women Our next meeting for General is on March 5th at 10 AM in the Life Center. It is a Lenten Brunch and our special guest speaker is our own Nikki Combs. She will be speaking on “Foundations of Blessedness.” Please come and bring a friend. The day circle meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 10:00 AM in the church library. I will get in contact about meeting with the Lydia Circle. I am planning on the 10th of March. 8

COMING SOON!!! Our Annual Rummage sale, sponsored by the Wesley Class, will be on Saturday, April 30th, from 8:00 to 3:00 pm. We will have a bag day on Monday, May 2nd, from 9:00 to 12:00 noon. Any rummage left over will go to charity. Once again we look forward to getting all of your rummage and garage sale items and we will pick up if needed. You can start bringing your rummage on Tuesday, April 26th. We will start setting up tables on Tuesday afternoon but will leave room for child care activities. We will start placing rummage on tables Wednesday after 9:00am. Pricing and sorting will continue through Friday. Call Gene McMahan to arrange for pick up. Please save your paper and plastic bags for this sale. Be sure the rummage is clean and in good condition. Please do not send electronic items that do not work. There will be a bake sale on Saturday so we need cooks to donate. There will be another sale of "Next to New Jewelry" this year and two tables will be used for this activity. We appreciate all helpers and volunteers, so come and help. Sorting and pricing takes a lot of time. Gene McMahan, Wesley Class I attended Leadership Training on February 20, 2016. I attended two different sessions, Trustees and Lay Leadership. Both were very informative. What stuck in my mind from the Lay Leadership, amongst several items, was to put things in the newsletter. As some of you know one of my passions is worship and the planning of it. Scheduling of childcare is a very important ministry we must pursue so that we can gain more additions to our church family. I am responsible for this scheduling. This is very important for young families and families who bring grandchildren and other young family members. We do have some volunteers in place for Sunday childcare but we need more. My current list of volunteers is decreasing. I have provided a breakdown of the cost for a year regarding four individuals being paid at minimum wage. I just want to show you what is actually needed each and every month for Sunday childcare, to include both worship and Sunday school.  We must have two people in the Nursery during worship.  We must have two people in the Toddler Room during worship.  We must have two people in the Nursery during Sunday school.  We must have two people in the Toddler Room during Sunday school.  This equates to 32 individuals that are required in a four week month.  This equates to 40 individuals that are required in a five week month. These numbers are for just one month. In a total year we need 416 individuals in order for us to provide childcare to families with infants and toddlers. In order for us to grow we must provide this ministry. This is a part of our growth. In a perfect world we could afford to hire four individuals for every Sunday at minimum wage. However, we do not live in a perfect world and our budget cannot afford this. Here is the calculation for this: $7.25 x 3 hours (9:00 a.m. to noon) = $21.75 $21.75 x 4 individuals (2 in Nursery and 2 in Toddler room) = $87.00/week $87.00 x 4 weeks = $348.00/month $87.00 x 5 weeks = $435.00/month $348.00 x 8 months = $2784.00 $435.00 x4 months = $1740.00 $2784.00 + $1740 = $4524.00/year Please contact me if you would like to become a volunteer. Hello! I am presenting a free seminar about Dyslexia for parents. I was hoping that you might be willing put it in your newsletter and/or bulletin the few weeks before the event. The information is below. Please let me know if you need any other info. Thanks so much! Susan Lee Could Your Child Have Dyslexia? Dyslexia is an inherited condition that causes children (even those with normal or higher than normal intelligence) to struggle learning to read, write, and spell. If you have concerns that your child may have Dyslexia, getting help as early as possible is key. Waiting to see if they “grow out of it” is the worst thing you can do. This FREE seminar will tell you what the signs of Dyslexia are and where you can get help if your child is struggling to learn to read, write, and spell. Help is out there… join us to find some answers Monday, March 28th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Miami Room at the Anderson Public Library. For more information, contact Susan Lee of Eloquence Therapy Services, P.C. at 765313-7570 or [email protected].
