Jim Morin is a retired United Methodist pastor, a friend and personal mentor, a WWII vet and perhaps most importantly, my friend Jim is a committed pacifist. I asked him once how is life long pacifism squared with his service in the Pacific during WWII. Jim had fought in places like the Philippines and Okinawa. He responded: “sometimes in the face of overwhelming evil you have to fight.” It’s been a long time since I’ve spoken with my friend. He came to mind this morning however when I read an email from a missionary to his sister. The missionary was serving a small Christian community in a place called Qaraquosh, a small town near Erbil, Iraq. ISIS forces had recently captured that town and rounded up the children of the Christians and asked them to renounce their faith. When they didn’t (and according to the email not one did) they were systematically beheaded as their horrified parents looked on. As I read that email, Jim Morin’s words came flooding back and I have a newer, more gut level understanding of why my friend put is life on the line decades ago to face down the fascism of Hitler and Tojo, despite his pacifism. I am the product of a post modern seminary education. Prevailing opinion was that evil exists, but thatthere is no personification of it. In other words, there is no such thing as “Satan” per se. They are wrong. Satan does exist. You can see his handiwork in the Middle East. Furthermore, Satan loves it when some of our best and brightest theologians don’t believe in him. Sadly, this belief about Satan is fostered by the politically correct notion that there is even no such thing as “evil” and that morals are relative. I believe there is another phrase that accurately describes what moral relativism is: “Moral cowardice.” So just for the record, let this post modern, seminary educated pastor say clearly and unequivocally that there is evil in world and that it is well represented by the forces of ISIS! Further, I don’t know as much about Islam as I would like to. But I know that what is happening to innocents in Syria and Iraq right now at the hands of ISIS, Christian and Moslem by the way, is not religious. It’s political and it’s satanic. So what should our response as a nation be? When it comes to foreign policy, that’s an article for another time and another venue. As Christians, we should listen to the advice of the Apostle Paul by putting on the full armor of God. Cinching up the belt of truth and adjusting our breastplates of integrity then, let us agree that the time for playing politically correct word games must be over. This is not an overseas contingency operation, this is warfare. Acts of barbarism in places like Erbil are not the acts of petty criminals. They are acts of state sponsored terrorists driven by a fascist ideology. Jesus once said that there will be times when we hear of wars and rumors of wars but that we should not be troubled or afraid. (Matt. 24:6) Let’s remember though that while Jesus encouraged us to not be afraid, he wasn’t telling us to be indifferent either. A couple of other tools in Paul’s armor of God kit are prayer and the bible. These are the ways we Christians can go on the offensive. So I urge you to be in prayer for our brothers and sisters who are being persecuted by ISIS and other murderous extremists. Stay in the Word so that we might now that God is who Jesus said He was and that God will do what He says He’s going to do. In the end, we know that the reconciling promise of the cross means that Jesus has already won and that Satan, in the long run, no longer can. In the end, the ultimate outcome of the battle is a foregone conclusion. Blessings, Pastor Jeff
