Soul Purpose - July 2016 As I submit the opening words of my first EUMC Soul Purpose column, I'm attending Annual Conference in Greenville, it's 5:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon and I'm taking a ninety minute break at the local Starbucks before going back into session. Starbucks is extremely busy today, but then, the best places usually are... Starbucks, known for having the best Java, is buzzing with people rushing in for an afternoon refresher before heading out for dinner, movies, shopping, or a quiet evening at home. Tonight, the best restaurants will be crowded as patrons invade the doors looking for the most tender cut of steak, authentic and scrumptious pasta, best pit-flavored barbecue, or ocean freshest seafood. When you see a restaurant packed with people, it's usually a sign that the food they serve is among the best.

Rev. Terry Williams and wife Jane

If you want to see the best doctor to treat your condition or the best dentist to perfect your smile, be prepared to wait a few weeks to get the valued appointment. Why? Because they are always busy. Why? They are probably the best in their chosen field. From butchers, bakers to candlestick makers, we live by our reputations and the best at a given trade are usually the busiest. And the best and busiest churches...well,...hhhmmm, why are some churches considered the best and what is it about them that has people flocking through their doors during those peak hours of worship? The preaching? Lord have mercy, let us hope not; WAY too much pressure in these opening weeks and Joel Osteen I'm not. The ministries offered? Well, that might have some validity but there must be more. Maybe it's the manicured lawn offering the impression of a people that give great care to their church; the ample parking showing the largest number of cars at peak times, the chords of crescendo rattling the ceiling as the musicians become the envy of all others, the smells from the covered dishes from the best cooks in town, or the church with the tallest steeple sending out a signal that they're the church nearest heaven's gate. Are these sufficient reasons to label a church "best in town?" I don't think so... Well, consider this; what about acceptance? Could it be that the churches known for being the best among the multitude of churches are the ones that are busy flinging their doors open wide in spirits of hospitality and welcome? Could it really be as simple as acceptance of all regardless of.... _________, __________, & ___________? You can fill in the blanks because they're unique for every worshipper in every place...seriously, who or what drew YOU to Englewood United Methodist Church? Acceptance is not the only thing that brings a potential worshipper to a church, but it is a large part in the equation than we might dare consider. Continued on Page 3. . . .

. . . Continued from Page 1 Ray Stevens recorded a song many years ago (can't believe I'm dating myself so early in my time among you) that was, for a number of weeks, the best song, ranked number one, in the United States, Canada, and Australia. This song got the most airplay because it was, at that time, the finest song in all the land. Here are a few of its lyrics: "We shouldn't care About the length of his hair Or the color of his skin Don't worry about what shows from without but the love that lives within" With its anti-racist, pro tolerance lyrics, Everything Is Beautiful was a radical song in the 1970's. If we were to rewrite this song today, what would those lyrics say to us? I am looking with great anticipation to joining the Englewood family and shepherding you in the years ahead. As your Lead Pastor and Chief Mission Strategist, I can't wait to build on your existing ministries and help develop new ones. I want us to be seen as the church in Rocky Mount that is accepting, the church which is leading the pack in meeting the needs of both our local community and in villages and neighborhoods around the world. I want us to fling our doors open wide and overflow as we "make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." But, just like coffee shops, restaurants, and doctors must do, we too must work hard in developing the reputation that Englewood UMC is the place to be every time their doors open. I'm looking forward to the conversations I will be having with you, the wonderful meals we will be sharing, the time we will spend studying scripture and discovering how it applies to our lives, and seeing how Christ Holy Spirit is ever weaving, shifting, and shining through the ministry we will share that will build God's Kingdom on earth. In our opening weeks together I will listen, learn, and love you. In the months and years ahead I will lead us. We'll do all we do together. I need each of you to pray and participate. Be open to change as I'm open to learning your traditions. Be committed to living into the vows we each pledged when we became United Methodist - "To faithfully participate in the ministries of the Church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness." With that, I'm excited to be here and to be appointed to serve as your Pastor. I have already started to pray for God to give us vision, and I will continue to pray for you in this time of transition. Please pray that Jane, Rebecca, Rachel, our often visiting grandchildren, and I settle nicely among you. Pray for God’s protection as we minister together, and that we will thrive as we become the best we can be with all we have to offer. Let's get busy... Chen and Shalom...

Pastor Terry Nancy, thank you for the time and effort you gave to display each of the stained glass windows in the sanctuary. As you noted, each window has a biblical meaning as depicted by the artist Rob Wysocki. These windows have a special meaning to me and my family. Thanks for your great presentation on the church bulletins.

To All My Church Family, I wish to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, condolences, and food during the loss of my brother. Following a phone conversation with his oldest daughter, we are grateful that God intervened and didn’t let him get to the place where he would have suffered the horrible ravages of cancer. They say we know when our time has come and apparently he did, as he asked his children to take care of his garden and take good care of their mother. God sure does work in mysterious ways. Again, thank you.

UMW FUND RAISER The Women of the Way Circle will be selling Rada Cutlery as a means to raise money to support their mission activities. Rada Cutlery is American made. It was sold here previously as several of our members still have knives they use regularly and attested to its durability. In addition to the many types of knives from which you may choose, Rada also offers several types of serving and cooking utensils, cookbooks, stoneware, cheesecake and pound cake mixes, dips, soups, cheeseballs, and sauces. So, there is something for everyone! During the months of June and July, a circle member will be in the area adjacent to the narthex after the 8:25 a.m. and before the 11:00 a.m. services with the Rada catalogue. Take a minute to stop and place your order! Remember these items also make excellent gifts. You also can contact any Women of the Way member or our church office to order. We appreciate your support in helping us raise our mission funds!!

LOCAL MISSION WORK You don’t have to leave the country or the state to work in the mission field. You can do it right here at home. During the summer, the UMW circles usually don’t meet. But this year, The Women of the Way Circle decided to take this time to do some local mission work. On Tuesday, June 21st, several members of this circle joined together to volunteer their time at Faith Christian Ministries of Nash County in Nashville. They had previously volunteered here during a regular meeting month but wanted to do more in Christ’s name. These women talked, sorted clothes, talked, worked at various other jobs, and had fun serving as the hands of Christ in a local Christian organization that supplies food, clothing, money, and support in a Christian atmosphere to residents of Nash County. The church recently partnered with this organization in the MEALS of the Month program so this is just another way EUMC is serving others.

SENIOR ADULT FELLOWSHIP Wednesday, July 20, 2016 12:00 p.m. The Senior Adult Fellowship will meet on Wednesday, July 20 at noon. Bring your own lunch and beverage (water will be provided) and enjoy a time of fellowship with friends while we eat together. Following our meal, we will be playing BINGO. Please bring a wrapped one dollar item, an “attic treasure” or a “white elephant” item to share as a bingo prize. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy this time of fun and togetherness. We’ll miss YOU if you aren’t here!

EUMC FLOWER MINISTRY When you place flowers in the sanctuary or narthex, if you would like to donate them to the Flower Ministry, please contact Sharon Dunn at 443-1920 (during the month of July). They will be delivered to our sick and shut-ins on Monday. On those Sundays when no one has signed up to place flowers in the sanctuary, the Flower Ministry Fund is used to place flowers in the sanctuary so that flowers will be available for the shut-ins that week. If you would like to make a contribution to this fund, please make your check payable to EUMC and mark Flower Ministry on the memo line.

FAITH CHRISTIAN MINISTRY OF NASH COUNTY JUNE NEEDS Thank you for your faithfulness in continuing to support this mission project by donating food to feed the hungry in Nash County. We continue to supply Faith Christian Ministry of Nash Carolina with 3 to 5 boxes of food monthly. Faith Christian Ministries of Nash County is thrilled with your support. Starting this Sunday, July 3rd, the "Meals of the Month" donation will be Spam and Macaroni & Cheese. There is a tub and 2 yellow boxes located in the area beneath the names tags in the area adjacent to the narthex, labeled "FCM MEALS OF THE MONTH". Please donate these food items to help stock their food pantry throughout the month of July. This is another wonderful opportunity for this generous congregation to help others who can't help themselves.

Vacation Bible School - Thank You Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s VBS so amazing! Over the four nights of VBS, we hosted 22 children and their families and helped them discover that Jesus is the light of the world! It was a truly wonderful week filled with laughter, music, learning, and fun; we could really feel God’s presence at work in the lives of our children. This was made possible by those of you who served as crew leaders, station leaders, food preparers, registration helpers, and more. It’s never too early to sign up to help with next year’s VBS - talk with Savanna about volunteering!

Youth & Children At Compassion Café

This is our annual Block Party. This year we are hoping to have a joint party with St. Andrews Episcopal Church. So in addition to meeting people in the neighborhood, we will be able to join together with our Christian neighbors across the street in food, fun, and fellowship. More information will be coming out closer to the date. If you weren’t able to come last year, just ask your friends how much fun they had and what good food was eaten!! So mark your calendars and plan to attend this happy event.

The youth and children will be providing and serving the meal at the Compassion Café at Nashville UMC on Wednesday, July 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We will need several adult volunteers to help with the Compassion Café on that day. If you are able to attend, please contact Savanna.

Membership Roll Review We have over 1,000 names on our membership roll. Many are inactive perhaps because they are attending another church or have moved away.
