Dear Saint Sophia Family, Last month was yet another busy but spiritually rewarding month for our youth and young adults. Our GOYANs attended a Lenten retreat hosted by our sister parish, Saints Constantine and Helen. The retreat was led by Ionian Village (IV) On-the-Go counselors. IV On-the-Go is an exciting new youth ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in which current and former IV counselors travel to parishes across the country to lead retreats that give our children a taste of the IV experience at home. We are so pleased that our teens took advantage of such an amazing opportunity! Our JOY and Little Angels worshipped together with their parents on the Saturday of Lazarus and enjoyed breakfast sponsored by our Ladies Philoptochos Society after Divine Liturgy. Father Dimitri also led the children in a discussion about confession and, together with Father Steve, heard their confessions in the church. The children also made palm crosses for Palm Sunday. Our GOYANs hosted the annual plaki luncheon on Palm Sunday. Many thanks to our teens and to Eleni Planzos and her team of volunteers for preparing and serving such a delicious meal! Our young adults spent Palm Sunday together in fellowship during an afternoon potluck. Finally, our campus ministry students celebrated the end of the year and our GOYANs participated in a basketball tournament hosted by Saint Katherine’s in Falls Church, VA. Our altar boys, myrofores, and teen girls deserve special recognition for their outstanding participation in our Holy Week and Pascha services this year. Excellent job everyone! We are so proud of you! Our youth and young adult ministry activities will be coming to an end in May. We hope everyone has enjoyed the year as much as we have. Don’t forget our golf tournament on June 16th. If you haven’t already signed up to participate, please do so! All the proceeds from this event support our youth ministries. On March 9th, Saint Sophia hosted the district level of the Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival for the Direct Archdiocesan District. What does it mean to Be the Bee? Last fall, the Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministries began a weekly series of short, informative, entertaining, and spiritually beneficial videos. “Be the Bee” is named after a metaphor associated with Elder Paisios of Mount Athos, and explores ways that we can all focus on what is good and beautiful in our everyday lives. Hellenic College/Holy Cross Summer Program for Juniors and Seniors in High School Applications for Summer 2014 are now available! Please click here. CrossRoad is a 10-day summer program for high school juniors and seniors. It combines the greatest gifts of Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (HCHC) through faculty instruction and participation, an enthusiastic staff of graduate students, the beautiful campus overlooking Boston and of course the exciting city of Boston itself. Students will participate in daily classes with Orthodox faculty from HC/HC and other institutions, and attend Vespers each evening at neighboring parishes in the Boston area.
