CATHEDRAL OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

WEDDING MUSIC PLANNING GUIDE Dear Engaged Couple, Let me congratulate you on your upcoming wedding. This guide is designed to ease the music planning portion of your wedding planning. In it you will find comprehensive lists of music from which you may choose your wedding music. Our hope is that the music program at the Cathedral will add to the grace, beauty, and solemnity of your wedding liturgy.

Please contact the music director at least two months prior to your wedding to schedule a planning meeting. The fee for the organist, planning meetings with the Music Director, rehearsal time, and performance on your wedding day is $300.00. The Music Director will arrange for a professional Cantor to sing as soloist at your wedding. This entails a fee of $125.00. Please mail both checks to the church offices one month ahead of your wedding. If you wish to utilize the services of an organist other than the Cathedral’s, there is an Organist’s Bench Fee in the amount of one half of the normal fee ($150.00). All musical selections must be submitted to the Music Director one month prior to the wedding for review and approval. If you would like an additional instrumentalist, (i.e. trumpet, violin, harp, etc.) the Music Director can contract this person for you if you like. The policy of the Diocese of Portland regarding music in the liturgy requires that all selections be truly religious and/or liturgical compositions. The wedding liturgy is a very important part of your wedding day, and the music is an integral part of this celebration. Contemporary songs from the stage, screen or pop culture are not capable of bearing the weight of the liturgy and should be reserved for such events as the reception. Two pieces of note which fall into that category are Wagner’s Lohengrin (Here Come’s the Bride), and Mendelssohn’s Wedding March (There Goes the Bride). All of the musical selections should serve to enhance the beauty and solemnity of the wedding liturgy. This will be achieved by selecting each piece with special attention to its ritual and liturgical context.
