Dear Parishioners and Friends of the Cathedral, Advent is only two weeks away! If you remember back to last Advent, one of the things that we started to do was to sing some of the Mass parts in Latin (namely the ‘Holy, Holy’ and the ‘Lamb of God’). And as I mentioned back then, the goal of doing this is not to return to the use of Latin at every celebration of the Mass, but to respond to the request of the Second Vatican Council that all the faithful be familiar with the principle Mass parts in Latin. Meaning that, it represents the desire of the Church. It is not about a conservative or liberal agenda, but about what the Church has asked us to do. But, because the most common objection to using Latin in the Liturgy is that Vatican II did away with it, I am going to quote from the document on the liturgy from the Second Vatican Council: “The use of the Latin language, with due respect to particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 36). Furthermore, the council decreed that “a suitable place may be allotted to the vernacular in Masses which are celebrated with the people… nevertheless care must be taken to ensure that the faithful may also be able to say or sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 54). Such parts would include: ‘Greeting,’ ‘Gloria,’ ‘Creed,’ ‘Holy, Holy,’ ‘Mystery of Faith,’ ‘Our Father,’ and ‘Lamb of God.’ To try to do all of these at once, would be overwhelming, so we are only going to do a few of them at any given time. To that end, during this upcoming Advent, we will once again do the Sanctus (Holy, Holy) and the Angus Dei (Lamb of God) in Latin. We will use these Mass parts during Advent and then will return to English at Christmastime. Again, the goal is not to switch to Latin exclusively, but to ensure that the call of the Second Vatican Council is realized, namely, that we are able, if need be, to recite the principal Mass parts in Latin. Another thing to keep in mind is that the ability to recite the principle Mass parts in Latin serves the unity of the Church. It allows for the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ to pray with one voice when she gathers together from disparate parts of the world. It was surely the hope of Vatican II,that when we gather for Mass with Catholics from other nations, who speak other languages, that we be able to pray with one voice around the one altar of sacrifice, which makes us one with Christ and each other. There is something intangible, yet deeply profound, about standing next to someone whom I may not be able to communicate with in any other way because of a language barrier, but when it comes to that which really matters – what I believe – we can stand side by side and proclaim together: “Credo in unum Deum …” (I believe in one God…). In that moment, at the high point of the Church’s most sacred activity, I not only know what my brother or sister is saying, but I am also united with them in the truth of professing it.

Fiscal Year Sunday Collection.... $185,589 Total Over (Under)...............................$2,543

So, let us respond to the call of the Second Vatican Council and immerse ourselves in the prayer of the Church that endured for sixteen centuries (Latin was the exclusive language of prayer from the 4th century until the 20th in the Western Church). To aid us, the Mass parts, with musical notation, will be printed in the bulletin. And be patient, this is challenging for most of us. It will probably take a little while, but it will sink in, and before long you’ll be able to switch between Latin and English at Mass as easily as you change stations on the radio.

The Jubilee Year of Mercy

Tuesday, November 15, 7:30 pm Katelyn Emerson, organist (Boston, MA)

closing of the Holy Doors marks the end of this unusual opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence. To receive the Jubilee indulgence: A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. The indulgence may be gained for yourself, or for one of the Holy Souls in Purgatory. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: • have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; • sacramentally confess their sins; • receive the Holy Eucharist; • make a profession of faith; • pray for the intentions of the Holy Father; • pass through the Holy Door.

Supported by a grant from the Cleveland Foundation: The Charles H Teare & Clifford K Kearns Fund In collaboration with the Cleveland chapter, American Guild of Organists. Katelyn Emerson is the 1st prize winner of the AGO 2016 National Young Artists’ Competition in Organ Performance (NYACOP). She has performed throughout the United States and Europe, giving “superlative performance with musical precision” (Worcester Chapter, American Guild of Organists).

As the end of the Year of Mercy draws close, the planned

The Holy Door at the Cathedral will be closed at the 10:30 am Mass celebrated this Sunday, November 13.

Concerts are free: no reservations or tickets required. Free secure parking in the surface lot or the Cathedral Plaza Garage.

Stewardship of the Earth As Christians, we believe that the earth is entrusted to our faithful stewardship. We are not its owners, but its caretakers on behalf of God. How can I be a good steward? Take Action at Home - Brainstorm what lifestyle changes you can make as an individual or family to reduce your own consumption in order to better protect God’s creation. Here are some ideas based on those Pope Francis mentions in Laudato Si’ (no. 211): 1. Use fewer paper and plastic products – e.g. use a re-usable water bottle or shopping bag 2. Reduce water consumption – e.g. take shorter showers, wash dishes by hand, etc. 3. Don’t cook more than you will consume 4. Compost (instead of throwing out) food waste 5. Recycle 6. Reuse instead of disposing 7. Use public transportation, carpool, walk, or ride a bike 8. Conserve electricity – e.g. turn off lights and buy energy-efficient appliances 9. Plant trees Recycle, shop wisely, simplify your lifestyle. Please recycle! For more ideas visit: .

our monthly PIC (Personal Items for Cosgrove) collection. You will find a designated box placed at the East 9th Street vestibule. The Social Action Ministry of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist would appreciate your donations of newly purchased socks and underwear for men and women, to be distributed to those in need by the Bishop Cosgrove Center. Thank you for your attention and compassion to those less-fortunate members of our society.

Sharing Thanksgiving with the Needy

Not all of us are fortunate enough to have a “Norman Rockwell” dinner on Thanksgiving. With this in mind, the Bishop Cosgrove Center will serve Thanksgiving meals to approximately 600 guests on Wednesday, Nov. 23rd. To make it extra special, they would like to offer a variety of desserts: cakes, pies, cookies, cupcakes, and pastry. We are asking for your help in this endeavor. We ask that you do not bring anything that needs to be refrigerated. Between Saturday, November 19th, (after the 4:30 pm Mass) and noon, Tuesday the 22nd, please bring your homemade or bought contributions to the Brides Room (or give to an usher), or to the Rectory on Monday & Tuesday morning. The Cosgrove Center will pick up the donations before noon on Tuesday, Nov. 22nd. 

I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking their breast, all say) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Text: Psalm 98, © 1998, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Music: © 1988, Owen Alstott. Published by OCP Publications, Portland OR 97213. Printed with permission: LicenSing 602041

Sing praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the Lord.

Let the sea and what fills it resound, the world and those who dwell in it; Let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains shout with them for joy. Before the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to rule the earth, He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with equity.

Psalms for the Week Sat: Blessed the man who fears the Lord. Mon: Those who are victorious I will feed from the tree of life. Tue: I will seat the victor beside me on my throne. Wed: Holy, holy, holy Lord, mighty God! Thur: The Lamb has made us a kingdom of priests to serve our God. Fri: How sweet to my taste is your promise!

Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

O God in heaven, hear the prayer we offer now. Your name be hallowed far and near; to you all nations bow.

Your kingdom come; your will on earth be done in love, as angels and the saints fulfill your holy will above.

Our daily bread supply while by your word we live. The guilt of our iniquity forgive, as we forgive.

Choir: God be in my head Sarum Primer (1558) / Austin Lovelace God be in my head, and in my understanding; God be in mine eyes, and in my looking; God be in my mouth, and in my speaking; God be in my heart, and in my thinking; God be at mine end, and at my departing.
