SUMMER CAMPS & CLASSES AT THE WASHINGTON PAVILION Hello from the Community Learning Center (CLC)! We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Washington Pavilion this summer! In this guide, you will find a multitude of classes and camps! Don’t miss our exciting and educational opportunities that will invite students of all ages to explore the worlds of theatre, art, and science. Experience unique hands-on activities and one-of-a-kind projects. Other opportunities abound – from Toddler Art and Pint-Sized Science to theatre classes and Wine on the Wheel, there is something for everyone!

Registration Information for Classes and Camps We have three ways to register for classes: 1. Register online at www.washingtonpavilion.org 2. Call our Box Office at (605) 367-6000 (toll free 1-877-WashPav) 3. Stop by the Washington Pavilion Box Office at 301 S. Main Ave. Classes and workshops go on-sale Wednesday, February 25 at 9:30 AM for Pavilion Donors and Thursday, February 26 at 9:30 AM for Washington Pavilion Members & Subscribers. Public on-sale is Friday, February 27 at 9:30 AM—sign up early as we fill up fast! There are no ticket fees or service charges associated with online or phone orders for workshops or classes. Prices are listed as “nonmember price/member price.” The prices in this guide do not include sales tax. *The Buy 3, Get 1 Free offer expires August 13, 2015. This promotional offer requires the purchase of any three Washington Pavilion classes or workshops at their list price to receive one free class or workshop of equal or lesser value. All four offerings must be scheduled at the time of purchase. Offer not available for internet sales.

Lunch Bunch Available from 12-1 p.m. for those taking multiple classes. Students must provide their own sack lunch. The Lunch Bunch will eat lunch at the Pavilion and then enjoy free play time or an organized game with Washington Pavilion staff. LUNCH BUNCH: $15.00 PER WEEK Before Care and After Care will not be offered this summer.

FOR LITTLE LEARNERS AGES 1-3 Toddler Art In this exciting series, parents and toddlers have the opportunity to work together to create art. Our caring art professional guides you through each project and brings energy and excitement to each class. Each session is three weeks long and is offered on Tuesdays or Thursdays for your convenience. We will use a variety of colors, textures, and materials to create art and develop our small motor skills. You come and play, and we take care of the supplies and the mess!

Does your toddler love animals? Join us for this exciting class that combines the amazing world of animals with the incredible world of art. Your wild child will love creating different animal art projects, and you'll love proudly displaying them around your home!

The world is full of colors and shapes! In this class, your toddler will get to explore different shapes and colors through countless exciting art projects. Using paint, paper, crayons and stamps, this class is sure to keep your toddler busy with spirits bright.

Does your toddler love books? How about exploring art? This session combines the best of both worlds! Your toddler will create art inspired by children’s books read by our caring instructor. The stories will jump right off the page and onto your child’s artwork.

Join us in a creative environment where students can have fun with art and science while developing their social skills. Pint-Sized Science offers preschoolers a chance to learn about science through hands-on activities that encourage experimentation and language development. Art Adventures provides preschoolers with a fun way to develop their understanding of color, shapes, and composition while strengthening fine motor skills and encouraging independent thinking. All preschool camps are interdisciplinary and allow time for play at specialized centers as well as structured group activities.

Does your preschooler love dinosaurs? Spend the week learning all about these larger-than-life creatures through dinosaur digs, dinosaur art, and activities that explore and celebrate the prehistoric. We will round out the week visiting our resident dinosaur, Stan, and his live, modern-day reptile cousins in the Kirby Science Discovery Center. Put a little color into your summer! Preschoolers will spend the week learning about colors and making amazing works of art! From painting and drawing to color mixing and matching, this camp will brighten your preschooler’s summer. Science is exciting! In this camp, preschoolers will have a blast learning about all things science through experiments and handson activities. With inspiring demos in the Kirby Science Discovery Center and active science exploration that allows for predictions and testing, preschoolers will build on their early scientific reasoning skills and become little Einsteins in no time! Get creative with math! Numbers and shapes are everywhere, and in this camp, preschoolers will get to create art and participate in hands-on activities in sorting, comparisons, and measuring that will teach them all about numbers and shapes and just how fun they can be! Let’s explore the great outdoors! Nature is incredible and in this camp, preschoolers will have many outdoor adventures. From activities with plants to learning about animals to weather games and songs, this camp will definitely get your toddler excited about our environment. Don’t forget your sunscreen! Preschoolers will create artworks just like van Gogh and Kandinsky as they use different art mediums and play art games. They will use their imaginations to explore famous works from art history and celebrate their own creativity by using fun, new techniques to create their own masterpieces! Vroooom…rev your engines! Transportation is all around, and preschoolers will race into the world through hands-on art and science activities inspired by the machines that move us. Buckle up for this fun-filled camp! Art comes in all shapes and sizes! In this camp, preschoolers will dabble in many mediums from painting to printing and drawing to sculpture. A handful of colorful science experiments will add to this creative camp! Before the construction of every great building comes an idea, a drawing, and a model. Preschoolers will use their creativity to design and construct different projects throughout the week while learning about architecture and engineering. The sky’s the limit! A is for artist, B is for brush, C is for color! Your preschooler will learn about the alphabet in a fun, creative way, exploring the letters of the alphabet through different art projects all throughout the week. Is your preschooler fascinated by their favorite furry creatures, slithering reptiles or crawling insects? In this camp, students will focus on all the wonderful creatures we share the planet with. They will meet some of our animal and insect friends, investigate the different environments these creatures live in, and much more.

Icky, sticky, slimy, gross! Science can get sloppy and in this camp, students will find out just how much! In a week jam-packed with the oozy science of chemistry and biology, students will spend their week with disgusting experiments and repulsive hands-on activities. Oh yuck! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s SUPER KID! Join us for this art and science dynamic duo camp where students will create their own super hero personas with costumes and practice their super human skills with games and challenges! Our heroes will learn the science behind some of their favorite superpowers and make some out-ofthis-world art! This summer, Pavilion Discovery Camp is going to be WILD! Don’t miss out on all the great activities the Pavilion has to offer with the ultimate summer camp! Spend each day of the week with animalthemed art projects, science experiments, theatre games, and all things Pavilion. Three specialized teachers will lead you through funfilled visual art, science, and performing arts activities throughout this full day camp. Please pack a sack lunch. It’s time to get messy! Students will be introduced to the basics of working with clay, both air-dried and fired, creating hand-built projects that explore texture, shape, and color. Students will increase their kinesthetic abilities and develop their critical thinking skills in the creative, fun process of working with clay. Students will use various mediums to splatter, squish, and slop together their own masterpieces, exploring different mediums, artists, and styles. The Star Wars galaxy may be “far, far away” but the science behind these movies can be found right here on earth. Learn about space travel, real life astronauts, and fun facts about our galactic planets and stars. Jedi Knight Status will be attained in this summer camp! Lions, tigers, and bears, OH MY! In this camp, students will explore all sorts of exotic animals through art! Students will learn all about the animals we share this planet with and will use their creativity to make wild masterpieces! It’s a paint party! All week long, students will dabble in different painting techniques. From watercolors to tempera, students will learn different ways to paint on various surfaces. By the end of this camp, you’ll have enough paintings to open your own gallery! Do you have what it takes to become a secret agent? This camp will show you how to make and break secret codes, uncover important secrets, interrogate persons of interest and hunt for a mole within your ranks! Sanford PROMISE Curious about what it’s like to be a laboratory scientist? The Biomedical Research Investigations Program offers middle and high school students an opportunity to engage in authentic scientific questions by performing a series of connected hands-on laboratory activities. The Washington Pavilion and Sanford Research will offer two great classes this summer: Forensic Lab Science and Genetics & Genomics Medicine. These classes are taught by Sanford Research staff so come prepared for a high-level scientific experience. Students will be selected for these camps based on an application. Learn to investigate like a crime scene lab analyst. Dactyloscopy, document examination, serology, trace evidence, and DNA analysis will all be explored in this 2-day workshop.

Discover some of the secrets of your DNA. Participants will perform genetic analysis on their own nuclear and mitochondrial genome and discuss ethical implications of genomic information in this two and a half day workshop. Note: No medically relevant genetic analysis will be performed.

Applications are open to students currently in the 6th through 10th grade and do not need to have a Pavilion membership. Students must be committed to participating in the entire series. A review committee will select up to 16 qualified students based on their application. Students will be notified of their decision status two weeks prior to class. There is an activity fee of $20 for accepted applicants which can be paid at the first class. Cancellations that do not occur 1-week in advance of the start of the program will be billed the $20 activity fee. Limited scholarships are available to students in need of financial assistance. Unless otherwise noted, sessions occur at the Washington Pavilion.

Join us for grown-up play time! All skill levels are welcome in this clay workshop designed for those who need to unwind and play in the mud. Clay hand building and wheel instruction included. We will supply wine (non-alcoholic options will be available), clay and glazes. This is a two-part course where you create your pottery on day one, then return the following Thursday at the same time to glaze and have the opportunity to create another piece. Each 2-week Wine on the Wheel session is $50/$45 members.
