Camp Communication

Staff will be corresponding with parents by e-mail as much as possible, so please make sure your updated email address is on your account. You can verify and update account details online or in-person at a recreation facility. Be sure to check your in-box regularly before your child’s camp program begins and also during the camp session. All email addresses are kept confidential. Copies of all general camp correspondence will be posted on the camp webpage at www.oshawa.ca/camps. If you do not have access to a computer, the required paperwork will be made available to you to complete on your child’s first day of camp. Please plan to stay for a few extra minutes to complete it and to discuss any important program information with the Camp Director and/or designate.

Extended Supervision

Centre Fun Swims, or Centennial Pool and Donevan Public Swims and ask a lifeguard to test your child. If successful, your child will be issued a swim test card by the Reception Desk staff. The fee for swim test cards is $5.85. Children 10 years and older may be admitted to the pool unaccompanied; however, to go into the deep end, children must show proof that they have passed the swim test. Campers who pass the swim test at camp, will have their photo taken when parents arrive to pick them up at the end of the day.

Inclusion Services Recreation & Culture Services provides integrated camp experiences for eligible children requiring extra support. Parents requiring inclusion support are also required to register their request for support staff for the 2 weeks of camp being attended by their child(ren) when they are registering for camp. At most camps, extended supervision is available before and after the camp program for a nominal fee. There are some exceptions and specific times and availability are noted within each camp description in this camp insert.

Inclusion Support Guidelines: If your child:

One hour before and after camp = $11.05/week or $22.10 for both

• Requires additional support at school, support/assistance at home or in the community with basic needs;

*1.5 hours before and after camp = $16.58/week or $33.16 for both Legends Centre only

Swimming Requirements

Campers that participate in the recreational swim component must adhere to the City of Oshawa’s swimming requirements. Please review the important information noted below. Children 5 years of age and younger must wear a lifejacket and must be accompanied by a camp counsellor who is responsible for their direct supervision, with a maximum of 2 children per counsellor. Children attending Little Legends will use the splash pad during designated swim times. Children 6 to 9 years of age who are non-swimmers must wear a lifejacket and must be accompanied by a camp counsellor who is responsible for their direct supervision, with a maximum of 3 children per counsellor. Please note: The ratio listed is applicable to camp swims only. Please visit www.oshawa.ca for information regarding ratios for our city leisure swims. Children 7 to 9 years of age who are able to pass the facility swim test may be admitted to the pool unaccompanied. If your child has already passed the swim test and received a swim test card, please bring it on the first day of camp. If your child is between 7 to 9 years, be proactive and get their swim test done prior to camp. Visit the Legends Centre or South Oshawa Community

Camp staff are certified in First Aid and CPR-C, submit a Criminal Information Check and undergo extensive training. Camps - preschool Dance Camp (Preschool)

L’il Explorers

Campers will learn ballet and jazz dance steps and will perform a dance routine to a latest hit song! Activities will also include creative crafts, indoor/outdoor games and sing songs! An informal recital for family and friends will be performed during the last class in the studio. Participants are required to be toilet-trained and out of diapers.

These half-day camps are full of games, songs, crafts and special activities. While the focus is on fun, children are developing social, sharing and cooperation skills, all making for a great first camp experience. Participants are required to be toilet trained and out of diapers. Please provide a peanut free snack and drink for your child each day. Delivered by The Drama Club, this camp involves both skill development and performance experience. Each camper will receive a scripted role in a full length play that they will perform on Friday afternoon! Mad Science camps are designed for exciting fun hands-on science activities. Children will become junior scientists for the week, having the opportunity to experience a variety of science adventures. Scooter Camp

Beginners will learn stance, balance, proper pushing, push and ride, push and turn and safety. More experienced scooter riders will focus on proper drop-in on quarter, proper pumping on transitions, standing and moving, tail whips and grinds. Campers must provide their own scooter, CSA approved skateboard helmet, wrist guards, elbow and knee pads. Campers will use the shared skateboard park in the morning and only in the afternoon if not too busy. Children will participate in a variety of sports as well as group activities and crafts. Due to pool renovations at the Civic Recreation Complex, campers may be transported one to two times per week to South Oshawa Community Centre for a recreational swim. FREE DROP-IN PLAYGROUND PROGRAM Ages 5-12yrs Play leaders will provide fun and exciting play opportunities for children ages 5-12 at a variety of neighbourhood park locations. Participate in games, sports, crafts and great special events. This is a DROP-IN program and children are free to come and go as they wish. Playground staff are not responsible for children once they leave the playground area. Under and over-age children are not permitted (proof of age may be required). All participants are required to fill out an emergency contact form before participating in the program. Forms can be found online at www.oshawa.ca/camps or in person at the nearest Park location to their home on the first day they attend the program. Locations and times are subject to change due to low attendance or inclement weather. To view park locations, refer to map on page 10 and 11. Playground Opening Ceremony Friday, July 24 at all individual Park locations.
