… who would teach them There is an old saying, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” That may seem comical on the one hand and perhaps even proverbial on the other. W hen it comes to the wellbeing of small babies and toddlers, it creates a down right scary picture. The job of parenting a baby or toddler is so vitally important. A nother proverb says, “A s a twig is bent, so grows the tree.” W hat an infant or toddler learns about his or her world in those first few months of life becomes a script that the rest of life will be ordered from. A few years ago, with the help of a lot of friends, The Children’s Home of Lubbock launched a new service, caring for teenaged mothers and their babies. This service has not been popular with some folks who have seen this service as encouraging the types of behaviors that created teen aged moms in the first place. However, after years of caring for children who had been removed from damaging parental relationships, we felt we had to make a proactive move to improve the prospects for these young and vulnerable children. The reality is that the mothers of these children were born to mothers who had no clue how to responsibly parent. These young mothers were in the foster care system long before they became mothers themselves. W ho was going to teach these young mothers how to parent, so their own sweet children would not be society’s victims in the next generation? With dedicated staff, these young mothers are learning to nurture, discipline, teach, and set the limits necessary to raise responsible children. A t the same time, they are learning how to take care of themselves, physically, emotionally and spiritually. These young mothers are completing educational requirements, learning to work, balancing life’s responsibilities with those demands of being an attentive parent.

This is hard work for everyone involved. The live-in staff deals with a lot of emotions from these young mothers and their children. They have to be “parentlike” without taking the parental responsibilities away from the mothers. They have to teach parenting and nurturing because these young mothers did not experience such from their own parents. They create opportunities for success or failure, and provide a safety net when the failure occurs. These godly folks work very hard, and the reward for them is very great. Occasionally a young mother comes to the point where she just cannot continue the parental pursuit. W hen she finally gives up, and about 25% will, we have the foster care program and adoption programs available to provide for the infant or toddler. But it is the successes that keep us so excited. A nd God provides a lot of successes. Your support helps us keep this service viable and strong. We don’t want these young mothers to feel like any road will take them where they think they might be going. We want to plant a concrete vision of where they want to go and provide them the tools and road map on how to get there. We want them to know where the pitfalls are located and how to avoid them. We want them to know that they can break the chains of abuse and neglect by becoming responsible and reliable parents for these precious children. Thank you for supporting The Childrens Home of Lubbock in this very special service. There will be precious souls in heaven because of the work we are doing here today.

hile the inner workings of an agency like The Children’s Home of Lubbock may be a mystery to some, we want you to have a bit of insight into our organizational chart. The Children’s Home is under the oversight of the elders of the Broadway Church of Christ. Each year every elder is given the opportunity to take a more hands-on role by serving on our Board of Directors. Then other members of the community are invited to serve as well. This year’s Board of Directors is made up of twenty men and women who have committed to give their time and resources to bless the boys and girls at the Home. Each brings his or her own strengths and gifts to the Board, and here they are... • Marcelino Banda is the minister of the Hispanic congregation of the Broadway church. He and his wife Orfila have three daughters and three grandchildren. • Amy Cary serves as one of the children’s ministers at Broadway. She and her husband Jeff have three young children. • Larry Christian, an associate professor at Lubbock Christian University, is a retired coach, educator and principal. He and his wife Marilyn have two sons. • Melissa Collier works part-time as a CPA, is married to Scott and they have two children. • Jody Davis is a retired accountant and avid volunteer. She is married to Butch and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren. • Gloria Gonzales is the Program Director for the Leadership Development Program - Texas Tech University Center for Prevention and Resiliency. She and her husband Mark have two sons. • Jerry Hoover, an elder of the Broadway church, serves as Chairman of the Board. He is the CFO of NTS Communications, and he and his wife Martha have one son. • Dr. Joel Hubbard is a professor at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in the Laboratory Sciences and Primary Care Department. Dr. Hubbard is married to Kathy, and they have three children, two of whom were adopted from the Home.

Charly Johnson is a homemaker who represents the Junior League of Lubbock on our Board. The Junior League is a generous friend of our children, helping to fund various programs on the campus. Charly and her husband Andrew have one daughter. • Craig McDonald is an elder of the Broadway church and works with investments. He and his wife Ann have three children and four grandchildren. • Brent Magers is the Associate Dean and CEO of the Medical Practice Income Plan at TTUHSC. “People always ask us if we’re crazy. We just smile and say, “Yes!” According to Myrtie Gibson this is the thing she and her husband Jack are asked the most. The reason is that, even in their retirement, they are willing to make a difference in the lives of children. The couple, now in their 70’s, have been fostering with The Children’s Home for almost 3 years. Myrtie stated that they have welcomed and cared for 12 children since being licensed in 2006. The Gibson family was recently named “Foster Family of the Year” for 2008. Jack and Mrytie were recognized for their tireless efforts in providing a loving and

nurturing home for children. The Gibsons enjoy working with the newborns and infants. On many occasions newborn babies have been placed from the hospital straight into their home. The couple is currently fostering a sibling group of 2 brothers. The youngest was only 7 months old when he came into the Gibsons’ home. After taking him to his sibling visits at CPS, the Gibsons realized that he has an older brother. The couple, who normally only foster infants, asked to move the older brother into their home. The boys were very bonded and the Gibson family wanted to reunite the siblings. It is almost been a year now, and the boys are doing well. The oldest has had significant delays, behavioral issues, and learning problems along the way. However, Myrtie and Jack have demonstrated strength and patience in enduring the rough times to provide a stable and consistent home for the brothers. The foster family is now working to prepare the boys for their future of reunification or adoption. Then, like many others before them, these boys will be

moving to their “forever families.” Jack and Myrtie work well with the birth families, helping ease the transition back home. In fact they continue to be in contact with many of their previous foster children and their families. Jack and Myrtie are reliable and dependable. They are on time with paperwork, required trainings, and appointments. They are a joy to work with. Their loving spirit and giving attitude is contagious to all that work with them. Jack and Myrtie Gibson, you are our heroes!

Consider Fostering for a New Beginning... C

hildren enter foster care through no fault of their own. They are permanently removed from their homes as victims of child abuse, neglect or abandonment. Many foster care children are available for adoption. • In fact, there are over 400 children awaiting adoption in the Lubbock area. • More than 4,000 children across Texas are awaiting adoptive families. • Approximately 129,000 children in the United States are available for adoption. The birth parents of these youngsters have had their legal rights permanently terminated and the children are left without a family. Ages of “waiting children” range from young children to early adulthood, with the national average of eight years of age. Virtually every race and ethnic group is represented. Some children are waiting alone

and others are waiting with siblings. Each of these children waiting to be adopted deserves a family. These are great kids. They are right here in your community and they need your help. Adopting from foster care is affordable. Yes, it requires training and preparations, but these children are worth it. Consider adoption. Call today.

e paused and looked up at me, smiling, and said, “I’ve never given this much money away before.” His hands were rough, and his wrinkled face was evidence that he had spent many years working hard under the relentless West Texas sun. On that day his aged hands were shaking as he wrote the large check to pay for a new

cottage at The Children’s Home — the culmination of the gracious couple’s dreams of 25 years. Bail and Macye Hill had a love for children and they spent much of the last years of their lives helping The Children’s Home fulfill its mission of serving children who needed a new start in life. It all began when the announcement was made late in

1953 that ground was to be broken to begin the working of building a new home for children, east of Lubbock on what had been a cotton patch. On the day of the groundbreaking, the couple was in the audience and watched as church and civic leaders took their turns at turning a ceremonial shovel of dirt. They were also present on

April 18, 1954, when the first cottage was officially opened. Later they would often drive the 100 miles from their home and sit in their car across the highway from the Home, just to watch the children play. The unassuming couple later explained that they didn’t want to get in the way of the busy staff who were taking care of the children. Macye spent hours collecting pictures and memorabilia to build scrapbooks charting the early history of The Children’s Home of Lubbock. Visiting with the Hills, I learned that not only did they dream of building a cottage, but they had emotionally become a part of the Home’s ministry to children. In a very real sense, it was “their” children’s home. Issue 2009-2 The Children’s Home of Lubbock Newsletter is published quarterly by The Children’s Home of Lubbock P.O. When the Bail and Macye Hill Cottage, our eighth, was opened in 1974, it was a delight to witness the joy the couple received from watching boys and girls find their rooms in the new house. The hard work of this good and gracious couple was rewarded by this culmination of their dreams to bless children. The proceeds from their many years of hard work and careful planning became a part of the Home’s permanent endowment and today helps pay for the cost of giving care to children at the Home. Bail and Macye Hill are still working to help children, even after they have departed our world.
