The 2011 FALLS CHURCH CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUMMER ENRICHMENT CAMP Grades 1‐7 – General Information
What is the Summer Enrichment Camp? The Falls Church City Public Schools’ 2011 Summer Enrichment Camp offers FCCPS students in grades 1‐7 the opportunity to pursue individual interests during two sessions of a 9‐day enrichment academy. All instructional activities will be developed and delivered by FCCPS educators. Dates, Times and Location? The summer enrichment camp will run in two sessions, Session 1 runs from Tuesday, June 21 – Friday, July 1, 2011 and Session 2 runs from Tuesday, August 16 – Friday, August 26. The classes will be held at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, 601 S Oak Street and at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, 7130 Leesburg Pike. Classes will be held from 9am‐12pm each day. Tennis Statistics will run from 12‐3 each day. How Do We Apply? Children currently in grades 1‐7 may apply for enrollment in the Summer Enrichment Camp. Class sizes are limited (numbers are indicated after course description). Registration begins on Monday, February 11, 2011 and will close on Friday, May 27th, 2011. Mr. Steven Knight will serve as the coordinator and administrative contact for the 2011 Summer Enrichment Camp, and can be reached via email at
[email protected] or by phone (703) 248‐5668. Parents may register their child by one of two methods: 1. The registration form may be delivered in person to Steven Knight at 601 South Oak Street from 9am‐ 4pm Monday through Friday, during the weeks of February 11 – April 29, 2011. 2. The registration forms may be mailed to Steven Knight (to the address noted on the registration forms) after February 1st. Registration forms are found on pages 6 & 7 of this brochure. Children will not be officially registered unless both page 6 & 7 are completed. What Does It Cost? The nine‐day session will cost $150.00 per child and per session. The checks will be held until the last day of enrollment, April 26th. Tuition fees cannot be pro‐rated. Check should be made payable to Falls Church City Schools. What About Transportation? Bus transportation will not be provided for the Summer Enrichment Camp. Parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from the Enrichment Camp site. 2
Is Day Care Available For My Child? Although the Summer Enrichment Camp does not provide daycare, the FCCPS summer daycare program will be available for any student who has completed second grade through those entering eighth grade. Description of Summer Enrichment Sessions A child’s placement in any enrichment session is determined by the grade completed as of June 18, 2011.

[email protected]], Instructors) Join Mrs. Harbison and Mr. Frei for a unique dramatic, musical and theatrical experience to rising third through fifth grade students in the City of Falls Church which is designed to promote self‐esteem, foster creativity, enhance individuality and demonstrate the importance of teamwork. The culminating activity of the camp will be a public performance for parents and friends of an original play! Students will work as a team in the production of the play by assisting with script writing, designing and creating sets and costumes, and share the responsibilities necessary for public performances. Grades: 3, 4 and 5 Sessions offered – June 21‐July 1 and August 16‐26

[email protected]], Instructor) Explore storytelling the digital way by combining writing, storytelling and technology. Create original stories by using graphics, video, sound, and images and transform them into short movies.

NI HAO!! Learn Chinese With Me (Tina Kao [
[email protected]], Instructor) Would you like to learn more about Chinese culture and learn some simple Mandarin Chinese expressions? This program will include language exposure through a variety of cultural activities, including arts and crafts, making Chinese dumplings, calligraphy, songs, dance, and games. The session will include guest speaker presentations and will culminate in a performance and exhibition. Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 Sessions offered – August 16‐26

[email protected]], Instructor) Tennis Statistics (Mr. Matt Sowers, Coach/Instructor) Tennis is a game full of strategy, statistics, and skills. As a former math instructor and current George Mason High School head tennis coach, I am always looking to help tennis players improve by understanding the statistics of the game. In this enrichment camp students will practice on the courts and then bring their results into the classroom setting to learn how to calculate and graph high percentage shots. On the court Players will participate in drills, games, and learn how to track statistics on the court Players will learn how to video tape courtside and learn how to review videos for tracking statistics In the classroom Students will learn how to calculate serving percentages Students will learn how to use Microsoft excel to graph performance of themselves, professionals (video clips of best male/female players in the world), and others enrolled into the camp Learn how to calculate shot percentage (errors vs. winners) Learn how to chart their movement/agility results I’m looking forward to seeing you courtside this summer. Students will collaboratively create a series of short TV shows that will be shared with the Falls Church Public School community via ACCESS. We need aspiring actors, writers, editors, videographers, directors, sound and lighting specialists to produce fun, yet thoughtful, segments relevant to our community. Join us as we: explore the lives of the individuals who make up our diverse community; inquire about how our community works; create funny, insightful, dramatic, silly works of theater that reflect our world. READY, AIM, CLICK!: Creativity through Photography (Ms. Allison Moriarty [
[email protected]], Instructor) “You don't take a photograph, you make it” Want to show your creativity but a paper and pencil aren’t the right tools for you? How about a camera? You don’t have to have a fancy camera to take great photographs to express your creativity! In this 9 session class, through the medium of photography, students are encouraged to express themselves and their world‐view. Students will learn the basics of digital photography including shooting in different modes, experimenting with point of view, composing shots. Students will put their photographic techniques into action through hands on practice on photographic excursions of the surrounding Virginia/DC area. This class is available for students currently in grades 5‐7. Digital cameras encouraged but not required. Remember, it’s the photographer that takes a great photo, not the camera! Three, Two, One…Math Contests and Hands on Math Problems (Ms. Pam Wilkie [
[email protected]], Instructor) Do you love a real math challenge? Or would you just like to keep your math skills sharp as you rise into the next grade? Whichever it is, join us for some math fun. We’ll learn about different math competitions and practice problems that are from contests such as Math Olympiad and Math Counts. We’ll also have a few hands‐on math problems to solve.
