NEWS ABOUT A MEMORIAL GARDEN TO VICTIMS OF THE SCHOOL FIRE We are pleased to report much progress has been made in developing a memorial to the 21 children who perished in the fire that devastated St. John’s school in 1915.

Next weekend the gifts of the bread and wine are given in memory of Thomas J. Armstrong from his wife Betty and loving family. Next weekend the sacramental candles are given in memory of Robert Glover from his loving family. If you wish to make a memorial gift of bread and wine or sacramental candles, you can call Betty at the parish center.

From our consultation with parishioners and school staff we have chosen a statue of Jesus with two children which will be set on a granite base. The names of the children will be inscribed with an appropriate message. This will be the centerpiece of the memorial. We are working with an architect, a landscaper and a monument specialist who together are creating a design and setting that will commemorate the loss of life but also speak of love and hope. We are calling this our memorial garden and it will be located in the open area in front of the school gym. We have tentatively set a date of October 23, 2005 for the dedication. This will be the Sunday just prior to the 90th anniversary on October 28.

A Mass and Healing Service will be celebrated by Father Agustin Anda on Thursday, August 11, 2005 in the Lower Church, beginning with the Rosary at 6:45 PM. The service is open to all, so please bring your family and friends. This is a time when many are in need of healing, not only physical healing but even more importantly spiritual, emotional and psychological healing. Mass On A Day of Rest “Since on the seventh day God was finished with the work he had been doing, he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation.” (Genesis 2:2-3) I have a confession to make. I recently served as a chaplain in the Mediterranean Sea. No, it was not military service but a wonderful opportunity to serve on one of those enormous cruise ships that rises 170 feet above the water, so high that it feels more like flying than floating on water. My “duty” was simple: to provide a mass each day and two on the weekend, as well as one “interdenominational prayer service” on Sunday. For this – and for being available for spiritual counseling which, not surprisingly, isn’t in demand on cruises - I was rewarded with room and board (mind you, the room was on deck two which is just above the water line, but how could I complain?). At the mass on Saturday evening, held in one of the larger of the eleven lounges aboard the ship, about 160 people showed up. At mass the next morning, another 60 came. The “interdenominational service,” on the other hand, drew not one single soul. I thought to myself: what incident could better express our Catholic conviction that, notwithstanding the hundreds of other Catholics who never came, it was the Catholic Eucharist that brought together from all parts of the earth this medley of people, mostly strangers, who believed that even if a vacation was time off from everything else, it was not “time out” from God. I was impressed. We joke from time to time about “Catholic guilt,” about how the fear of mortal sin was driven into us when we were children and how this still seems to motivate some of us some of the time. But fear was not the prime mover here. Nor was it the force of habit. Judging from the effort people made to be there and the quiet devotion that slowly transformed a cocktail lounge into a church, there was something more going on inside their consciences. People knew that they owed at least this one hour of their 288 hour vacation to God. Clearly these were not poor people. With the exception of the cruise chaplain, yours truly, these folks paid a pretty decent sum to get away from it all. Yet they knew they couldn’t get away from God. If they had it to spend, they could not ignore how fortunate they were to have it in the first place. Mass was, so to speak, their grace before and after 36 sumptuous meals, not counting the midnight buffets. It was their way to say “thanks be to God” for more than just my blessing: for every blessing they could think of. Come to think of it, shouldn’t every mass be that for us, along with our rest, even in less extravagant circumstances? The story of the seventh day of creation which I quoted above captures for me one of the most compelling reasons for celebrating mass on a day we set aside for the Lord. Sunday Mass is God’s way of getting us to stop and pause and rest in the realization, however fleeting, that who I am and what I have and the entire universe that I share with countless billions of other creatures owes its existence to a God who took the time after making it all happen to rest and enjoy his creation. Mass during a vacation is more than just a nice thing. It brings us back to the reason why Christian tradition, building on Jewish tradition, keeps its Sabbath holy by both worship and rest. It reminds me of what worship was once upon a time when we had more time and more leisure on Sunday, and less money and fewer things that we just “have to do.” The author of Genesis explained the link between rest and worship. Like God we stop once a week and remember where it all came from. For six days a week, you and I can act as if the world depends on us. But on the seventh, we give it back with praise to the One we really depend on. And, letting God be God, we share the Eucharist, the Lord’s greatest blessing, and we take time to rest and simply enjoy the gifts of God’s creation.

Living Rosary Pilgrimage

The Living Rosary Pilgrimage for August will take place at Immaculate Conception Parish in Salem. The Rev. Timothy J. Murphy will be our host. The date is August 9th at 7PM. The address is 15 Hawthorne Boulevard, Salem. Please join us and bring your family and friends.

Two Day Toddler Program Beginning in September of the 2005-2006 school year, St. John School will be offering a two day toddler program. Students must be 2.9 years of age by August 31, 2005. Classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday from 8:45 am to 11:30am. The tuition is $1225. for the year. This program will focus on Pre-K readiness, gross and fine motor skills and socialization. Contact the school office to register or for more information. Extended day programs We are pleased to offer extended day programs to our Pre-K and half day Kindergarten students. These sessions will run Mon-Fri from 11:30am to 3pm. For grades 1 through 6 the extended day program times are 2:45 to 5:30pm. Please contact the school office for more information. 978-531-0444.

St. John’s School Class of 1985 20th Reunion A 20th year class reunion is planned and the committee is trying to track down some of it’s lost classmates. The reunion is scheduled for November 25, 2005 and they’d like to get as many of the Class of ’85 there as possible. Light The Night Walk Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s nationwide evening walk to commemorate lives touched by cancer and to raise awareness of blood cancers. Anyone can participate. Children, adults and seniors are all welcome. This is a casual walk with no fitness requirements. Walkers carry illuminated balloons. Participants carry red balloons and our survivors carry white balloons as a symbol of hope. The Massachusetts Chapter’s Light The Night Walk events will be held in September and October in various communities. La Primera lectura de la Misa (1 Rey 19, 9; 11-13) nos presenta al Profeta Elías, cansado y desalentado, a quien el Señor se manifestó como un viento suave, como un susurro, expresando así su misteriosa espiritualidad y su delicada bondad con el hombre débil. Elías se sintió reconfortado para la nueva misión que el Señor quería que llevara a cabo. El Evangelio (Mateo, 14, 22-33) nos relata una de las tempestades que sufrieron los Apóstoles sin que Jesús estuviera con ellos en la barca. La barca estaba batida por las olas, y en peligro de zozobrar. Jesús se les acercó caminando sobre las olas y les dijo: Tened confianza, soy Yo, no temáis. Esas palabras consoladoras las hemos oído muchas veces de forma diferentes en la intimidad del corazón, ante sucesos desconcertantes y situaciones difíciles de nuestra vida. En la debilidad, en la fatiga, Jesús se nos presenta y nos dice: Soy Yo, no temáis. Nunca falló a sus amigos. Y si nosotros no tenemos otro fin en la vida que servirle, ¿cómo nos va a abandonar? Cuando los Apóstoles oyeron a Jesús, se llenaron de paz. Pedro le pide con audacia: Señor, si eres Tú, manda que yo vaya a Ti sobre las aguas. Y el Maestro le contestó: Ven. Pedro tuvo mucha fe, y cambió la seguridad de la barca y comenzó a andar sobre las aguas hacia Jesús. Fueron unos momentos impresionantes de firmeza y de amor. Pero Pedro dejó de mirar a Jesús y se fijó más en las dificultades que lo rodeaban, y se atemorizó. Olvidó que la fuerza que lo sostenía no dependía de él sino de la voluntad del Señor. Pedro comenzó a hundirse por la falta de confianza en Quien todo lo puede. ¡Señor, sálvame! Gritó. Jesús extendiendo la mano, lo sostuvo y le dijo: Hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué has dudado? A veces a nosotros nos puede suceder lo que a Pedro, que dejamos de mirar a Jesús, que nuestra vida de piedad se ha relajado, que nuestra oración es menos atenta, que somos menos exigentes con nosotros mismos. Para salir a flote, Pedro tuvo que asir la mano del Señor, y eso haremos nosotros, porque junto a Cristo se ganan todas las batallas. Hemos de aprender a no temer nunca a Dios, que se presenta en lo ordinario y también en las tormentas de los sufrimientos, físicos y morales de la vida: Tened confianza, soy Yo, no temáis. Dios nunca llega tarde para socorrernos, y ayuda siempre en cada necesidad. Él llega, aunque sea de modo misterioso y oculto, en el momento oportuno. Y cuando por alguna razón nos encontramos en una situación penosa, con el viento en contra, Él se acerca. Ponemos por intercesora a la Virgen Santísima. Ella nos ayuda a clamar: Renueva, Señor, las maravillas de Tu amor.

Reflexión: Depuse de despedir a la gente subió al monte a solas para orar. Hay que saber dejar ma Dios por Dios, para después dejar a los hombres, también por Dios. Es lo que hace hoy. Su reino no es de este mundo, y los discípulos estaban mas cerca de la mentalidad de la multitud (Querían hacerlo rey) que de la de Jesús. Si el evangelio nos presenta a Cristo tantas veces orando, aunque tenga mucho trabajo, es porque la oración es el pan del cristiano, sin el cual, en esta vida naufraga su fe. Le pasó a san Pedro. Al amanecer vieron los discípulos a Jesús caminando sobre el agua. Señor, si res tú, mándame a ir hacia a ti, andando sobre el agua, dijo Pedro. Ven, dice Jesús, Bajó de la barca Pedro, y echo a andar sobre el agua. Al sentir la con fuerza la ráfaga del viento, le entró miedo, empezó a hundirse y gritó: “Señor, sálvame”. En cuanto subieron a la barca amainó el viento”. Sentir miedo es común a todos los hombres ante la dificultad inesperada, o más fuerte que sus fuerzas. Como Elías, perseguido por Jezabel (1ª lectura). Pero Jesús quiere que Pedro y los suyos aprendan: les pone en la dificultad para que griten por ayuda a Él. ¡Que poaca fe! ¿Por qué has dudado? El resultado fue que todos reconocieron el popder de Jesús y su filiación divina: Realmente eres Hijo de Dios. El evangelio nos invita a enfrentar todas la dificultades que amenazan la barca, la Iglesia, animados por una fe segura y exigente que nos hace reconocer a Dios como salvador. 7

China arresta a un sacerdote y a sus parroquianos dándoles una golpiza La policía les sorprendió mientras celebraban la Eucaristía PINGTAN, viernes, 29 julio 2005 Haciendo uso de la violencia, personal de seguridad de China arrestó el pasado 25 de julio, hacia las 20.00 (hora local), al padre Lin Daixian, sacerdote de la parroquia de Pingtan en la diócesis de Fuzhou (en Fujian, sudeste del país), a un seminarista y a nueve feligreses. La detención se llevó a cabo durante la celebración de una Misa privada en una casa particular en Pingtan, a la que asistían medio centenar de fieles que oraban por la recuperación de otro feligrés con cáncer, revela una nota que envió en la noche del jueves «The Cardinal Kung Foundation» a Zenit. En el arresto del sacerdote, de la «Iglesia clandestina» --que reconoce la autoridad del Papa pero no está oficialmente aprobada por Pekín--, la policía «golpeó salvajemente a los feligreses, que intentaron en vano evitar la detención del padre Lin», denuncia. De acuerdo con el comunicado, «en el procedimiento, muchos parroquianos fueron golpeados y sufrieron graves lesiones, incluyendo fracturas de huesos, dientes rotos, daños cerebrales que causaron severas inflamaciones y desvanecimientos y muchos otros tipos de daños». La casa particular donde tuvieron lugar las detenciones fue completamente registrada y también gravemente dañada. El padre Lin, el seminarista y nueve feligreses permanecen retenidos en el centro de detención de Pingtan; de los diez últimos no ha trascendido su identidad, apunta «The Cardinal Kung Foundation», que con sede en Stamford (Connecticut, EE. UU.) se dedica a la promoción de la libertad religiosa de la Iglesia católica en China. Es la cuarta detención que, debido a sus creencias religiosas, sufre el padre Lin Daixian --de 40 años-- por parte del gobierno chino. Ordenado sacerdote en 1995, el padre Lin sufrió su primer arresto el 18 de octubre de 2000, en relación con la canonización celebrada por Juan Pablo II de 120 mártires el 1 de octubre del mismo año. La segunda detención se produjo el 15 de agosto de 2001; la tercera el mismo año, el 22 de noviembre. «El gobierno chino ha declarado repetidaente al mundo que hay libertad religiosa en China. También ha declarado que esta libertad está garantizada por su Constitución». Pero «este tipo de detención de inocentes creyentes sigue produciéndose. Es otro ejemplo de la total indiferencia hacia la libertad religiosa por parte de la autoridad china», alerta Joseph Kung, presidente de la citada Fundación. Advierte de que la persecución de católicos en China no sólo continúa, sino que «empeora y se hace más atrevida en un momento en que China está realizando un progreso económico significativo». El gobierno chino, aún admitiendo la libertad religiosa en la Constitución, permite las actividades religiosas sólo en estructuras y con personal registrado en la Oficina de Asuntos Religiosos. Toda expresión de culto fuera de estos canales controlados es considerada ilegal y peligrosa para el orden público, explica la agencia especializada en el mundo Chino «AsiaNews» -del Pontificio Instituto de Misiones Extranjeras-. 8

Misa En Un Día de Descanso “Desde que en el séptimo día Dios termino con el trabajo que él había estado haciendo, él descansó en el séptimo día de todo el trabajo que él había emprendido. Así que Dios bendijo el séptimo día y lo hizo santo, porque en el él descansó de todo el trabajo que él había hecho en la creación.” (Génesis 2:2-3) Yo tengo una confesión para hacer. Serví recientemente como capellán en el Mar Mediterráneo. No, no era el servicio militar pero una oportunidad maravillosa de servir en uno de esos enormes barcos del crucero que se elevan a 170 pies sobre el agua, tan alto que siente más como volar que flotar en el agua. Mi “deber” era sencillo: proporcionar una Misa cada día y dos en el fin de semana, así como un “servicio de oración interdenominacional” el domingo. Para esto–y por estar disponible para orientación espiritual que, no sorprendentemente, no está en demanda en los cruceros - yo fui recompensado con el cuarto y comida (imagínense, el cuarto estaba en la plataforma dos que esta ubicado justo encima de la línea de flotación de agua, pero cómo podría quejarme?). A la Misa el sábado por la tarde, fue celebrada en uno del más grande de los once salones a bordo del barco, aproximadamente 160 personas se presentaron. A la Misa de la mañana siguiente, otros 60 vinieron. Por otro lado al servicio “interdenominacional,” no se presento ninguna sola alma. Yo pensé para mí: qué incidente podría expresar mejor nuestra convicción católica que, a pesar de los centenares de otros católicos que nunca vinieron, era la Eucaristía católica que reunió de todas las partes de la tierra esta mezcla de personas, principalmente extranjeros que creyeron aun que las vacaciones son un tiempo de estar fuera de todo lo demás, no fue “tiempo fuera” de Dios. Yo estuve impresionado. Nosotros de vez en cuando hablamos en broma sobre “la culpa católica,” sobre cómo el miedo de pecado mortal fue conducido en nosotros cuando éramos los niños y cómo este todavía parece motivar a algunos de nosotros algunas veces. Pero el temor no era el autor principal aquí. Ni era la fuerza de la costumbre. Juzgando por el esfuerzo que hicieron las personas para estar allí y la devoción tranquila que lentamente transformó el salón de cóctel en una Iglesia, había algo más pasando dentro de sus conciencias. La gente sabia que ellos debieron al menos esta hora de sus 288 horas de vacaciones a Dios. Claramente éstas no eran las personas pobres. Con la excepción del capellán del crucero, atentamente, estas gentes pagaron una suma bastante considerable para conseguir estar fuera de todo. Todavía ellos supieron que ellos no podrían conseguir estar fuera de Dios. Si ellos hubieran tenido que gastar, ellos no podrían ignorar cuan afortunados eran de tenerlo en el primer lugar. La Misa era, por así decirlo, su gracia antes de y después de 36 comidas suntuosas, no contando los bufetes de la media noche. Era su manera de decir “gracias sean a Dios” para más de sólo mi bendición: para cada bendición ellos podrían pensar de. ¿Venga a pensar en él, cada Misa no debería ser así para nosotros, junto con nuestro descanso, incluso en las circunstancias menos extravagantes? La historia del séptimo día sobre la creación que yo cité capta para mí uno de los motivos más irresistibles para celebrar la Misa en un día que nosotros pusimos aparte para el Señor. La Misa del domingo es la manera de Dios para conseguir que nosotros nos detuviéramos hagamos una pausa y descansar en la realización, sin embargo breve, en quien yo soy y lo que yo tengo y el universo entero que yo comparto con los billones innumerables de otras criaturas que deben su existencia a un Dios que tomo un tiempo después de hacer todo para descansar y disfrutar su creación. La Misa durante unas vacaciones es más que sólo una cosa agradable. Nos devuelve a la razón por qué la tradición cristiana, construida en la tradición judía, guarda su Sábado Santo por los dos la adoración y el descanso. Esto me recuerda de lo que la adoración era una vez en un tiempo cuando nosotros teníamos más tiempo y más ocio el Domingo, y menos dinero y menos cosas que nosotros sólo “tenemos que hacer.” El autor de Génesis explicó el eslabón entre el descanso y culto. Como Dios nosotros detenemos que hacer un alto una vez por semana y recordar de dónde viene todo. Por seis días a la semana, usted y yo podemos actuar como si el mundo dependiera de nosotros. Pero en el séptimo, nosotros se lo devolvemos con la alabanza Al que nosotros realmente dependemos. Y, permitiendo a Dios ser Dios, nosotros compartimos la Eucaristía, la mayor bendición del Señor, y nosotros tomamos tiempo para descansar y simplemente disfrutar los regalos de la creación de Dios. 10
