Pastor’s Welcome Dear Friends, Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church! For over 150 years, St. John’s Parish has provided an environment for Sunday worship, varied liturgical events, celebrations and community events. The people of St. John’s community represent a wide variety of age groups, backgrounds, experiences and occupations. Given all these gifts, we realize that a newcomer can still feel isolated in the midst of new and unknown faces, ministries and opportunities. We hope to minimize such isolation and invite you to learn more about St. John’s so that you and your household may experience our rich opportunities for worship, community and ministry. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is truly a place where all are counted as parishioners. I invite you to look at this Parish Resource Guide and see where you may “fit” best in serving the Lord. Prayerfully review each ministry opportunity, keeping in mind your spiritual gifts, personality type and passion. Then choose where you would like to serve and contact the person in charge of that ministry. There may be other ministry opportunities that are not listed so you may even want to start a new one. We draw strength from our diversity as family and strive to provide support and services to all within our Parish so all may contribute and grow as members of the Body of Christ.

Thank you for being here! Father Michael Tix Pastor

Parish Mission Statement St. John the Baptist Catholic community, established in 1854, continues its mission to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. As people of faith, we evangelize by worship, education, charity and social justice. God works through us as we share the blessings of our time, talent and treasure.

Brief History St. John the Baptist Catholic Church was chartered in October of 1854 as the 13th Catholic congregation in the Diocese of St. Paul. That year, a log structure was built and a Cemetery consecrated on land donated by the Byrne family. This parcel of land was in Burnsville. In 1866, a frame structure was built and a new bell that is still used today was installed in the tower. On April 13, 1883, the frame structure burned to the ground. Another frame structure was built and was dedicated by Archbishop John Ireland in 1885. On February 2, 1902, a wood burning stove caused a fire and this church, too, burned to the ground. The Archbishop decreed another church would be built for the congregation of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, but this time, the building would be located in the neighboring town of Hamilton (now called Savage). On July 5, 1955, then Pastor, Fr. Albert Ziskovsky, and parishioners celebrated the church’s 100th anniversary. At that time, Fr. Albert Ziskovsky had a dream to build a parish school and on June 24, 1959, St. John the Baptist Catholic School and Convent were dedicated. In the following decades, the congregation continued to grow and plans were made to replace the 1902 church. In 1984, the 1902 church was torn down and the structure in which St. John’s parishioners worship today was built in its place. The cornerstone from the 1902 church was installed at the 125th Street entrance as a reminder of our parish’s tradition. Additions to the school and church in 1965, 1994 and 2000 created the present St. John’s campus which serves more than 2,650 families and representing more than 8,000 individuals. In 2005, the parish celebrated the 150th year of the church by a year long celebration. In 2009, the parish celebrated the 25th anniversary of the new church, the 50th anniversary of the school and the 20th anniversary of our preschool.

St. John’s Parish Today • St. John’s Parish is a community of more than 2,000 registered families and individuals. • Our pastor is Father Michael Tix and our Deacons are Rev. Mr. Jerry Little and Rev. Mr. Bob Durham. • Currently, we have approximately 600 students in our preschool and day school and approximately 500 students in our .Faith Formation program, which includes Sunday School through high school. • We are an active community with over 80 ministries in which to get involved in.

SACRAMENTS

There are seven Catholic Sacraments: Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick. The seven sacraments are ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant and important for Christians. They are special occasions for experiencing God’s saving presence. Baptism: For Catholics, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church’s way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God. Reconciliation (Confession): The Sacrament of Reconciliation has three elements: conversion, confession and celebration. In it, we find God’s unconditional forgiveness and as a result we are called to forgive others. Eucharist: Catholics believe the Eucharist, or Communion, is both a sacrifice and a meal. We believe in the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins. As we receive Christ’s Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God. Confirmation: Confirmation is a Sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. Like Baptism and Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of Initiation for Catholics and a Sacrament of faith in God’s fidelity to us. Marriage: The Sacrament of Marriage is a public sign of giving oneself totally to another person. It is also a public statement about God: the loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God’s values. Holy Orders: In the Sacrament of Holy Orders, or Ordination, the person being ordained vows to lead other Catholics by bringing them the sacraments (especially the Eucharist), by proclaiming the Gospel and by providing other means to holiness. Both priests and deacons experience different forms of orders in their call to ministry. Anointing of the Sick: The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical, but also for mental and spiritual sickness. This healing sacrament is celebrated at home, in a hospital or at the church. It is a sacrament that strengthens a person to live their baptismal promises in view of the unique challenges of sickness.

New Parishioner Registration We are happy that you are here! We are honored to welcome you into our parish community. Parishioners are available after any Mass to help with registration or any questions in the atrium. If you are over the age of 23 we ask you to register. You may also stop by the Parish Office during office hours to register or online at www.stjohns-savage.org. Mass Intentions A long-standing custom of the Catholic Church is requesting a Mass intention. People are invited to offer a Mass intention for a person living or deceased, as well as the needs of the church. Mass intentions are arranged through the Parish Office at 952.890.9465 and published in the weekly bulletin. There is a suggested offering of $10 per Mass. Baptisms Parents who wish to have their child(ren) baptized at St. John’s must attend a Baptism preparation class. This one-session class is offered on the second Monday of each month. Parents are encouraged to attend the class before their baby is born. There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is necessary. The Sacrament of Baptism is generally celebrated the second, third and fourth Sundays of each month at 12:15 p.m. Call the Parish Office at 952.890.9465 to register. Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) Saturdays from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Church. You may also make an appointment for the Sacrament of Reconciliation by calling the Parish Office at 952.890.9465. Weddings Parishioners who wish to be married at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church should contact a priest or deacon at least six months prior to their chosen date. The priest or deacon, with a sponsoring couple, will work with each couple to prepare them for this sacrament and the commitment it represents. Couples will also work with the parish wedding coordinator to make arrangements for their wedding day. Blessing of an Existing Marriage All baptized Catholics are asked to have their wedding vows witnessed before a priest or deacon unless a dispensation has been granted by the diocesan bishop. When people are married outside of the church they are invited to have their marriage blessed (sometimes called “validated”). This process includes meeting with a priest or deacon, completing a questionnaire and scheduling the ceremony to ask God’s blessing upon their marriage. Contact Father Mike Tix at 952.890.9465 or [email protected] for more information. Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical, but also for mental and spiritual sickness. This healing sacrament is celebrated at home, in a hospital or at church. Call the Parish Office at 952.890.9465 for arrangements. Nursery Little Angels Child Care is offered during the 9am Sunday Mass in accordance with the Sunday School and Children’s Liturgy of the Word schedule. It is available to provide a safe, welcoming environment for children ages 6-months old to 3-years old. Child care is provided by adult volunteers who have completed a background check and VIRTUS adult training. There is no cost to participate in LITTLE ANGELS, but pre-registration is required to assure child/adult ratios are maintained in accordance with Archdiocesan policies. Contact Colleen Roberge at 952.890.9465 or [email protected] for more information.

PARISH ADVISORY GOVERNING BODIES

Parish Pastoral Council The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body composed of representatives of the entire community and shall offer counsel to the pastor in matters which affect the spiritual and educational well being of the parish as identified in its mission statement. The Parish Pastoral Council is composed of six persons who are appointed by the pastor in collaboration with the current Parish Pastoral Council after a period of discernment. The Parish Pastoral Council generally meets on a monthly basis. Council members are individuals appointed to serve a three-year term; two openings per year. Applications are taken in the spring. Contact: Father Mike Tix, 952.890.9465 • [email protected] Finance Council The Parish Finance Council is a group of parishioners who offer counsel and recommendations to the pastor on financial matters as they relate to the life and mission of the parish. Greatly involved with the Parish Finance Council is the Parish Business Administrator. Members typically have a financial accounting or business background and are appointed by the pastor. The Parish Finance Council generally meets on a quarterly basis. Contact: Fred Fox, 952.890.9465 • [email protected] Parish Board of Directors Besides the Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Council, every parish has a Board of Directors. The members of the Board of Directors of a parish corporation include the Archbishop, Vicar General, Pastor, and two lay members. These lay members are also called trustees. According to archdiocesan law, “these five persons constitute the corporation and, according to the certificate of incorporation, have power to transact all business of the corporation.” From a more practical perspective, the Board of Directors is the body which signs any official and binding legal agreement as well as archdiocesan reports. The current lay trustees are Dale Happe and Craig Schoenecker.

VOLUNTEER MINISTRIES AND RESOURCES “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same spirit: There are different forms of service, but the same Lord.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-5

This booklet has been designed to help individuals discover the many ministry opportunities available to them at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. In the end, it is not about convincing anybody to do anything. It is about helping people discover who they are, what their spiritual gifts and skills might be and then assisting them to discern God’s special call to them. One of the most exciting parts of ministry is to assist others in understanding the specific calling that God has for each one of us. Each of us was designed by God to be a tool that could change our marriages, our families, our work places, our neighborhoods and to change us. We have the opportunity and challenge to make a difference.

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 Our prayer is that this Parish Resource Guide will challenge you to make a difference in the world!

Required Background Checks and virtus training

The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis requires background checks and safe environments training for all volunteers who work with or have regular contact with minors or vulnerable adults. When you sign up for a particular ministry, the coordinator of that ministry will inform you as to whether or not you need a background check for that ministry and will provide you with the appropriate forms and information necessary to complete the background check if it is required. The coordinator will also let you know the dates and times of the required Protecting God’s Children/Virtus trainings at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Contact: Fred Fox, 952.890.9465 • [email protected]

LITURGICAL MINISTRY

Arts & Environment Committee This group is comprised of parishioners who design and make decorations to create an environment to complement liturgies for each church season and feast day. Contact: Patti Nielsen • [email protected] Altar Servers Altar Servers assist the priest throughout the Mass. Their participation includes carrying the cross in the entrance procession, holding the Missal for prayers and assisting in preparations for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This ministry is open to all young people, boys and girls, who are going into fifth grade or older.  Contact: Iika Wilgenbusch • [email protected] Ushers Here at St. John’s we enjoy a tradition of hospitality that is unequaled. Our ushers are a wonderful group of gentlemen and ladies of all ages. They are always in place before Mass, assisting parishioners with seating, collecting the parish offering, aiding with the reception of Eucharist and distributing the parish bulletins. They wear the burgundy sashes with pride and sincerity. Contact: [email protected] Sacristans Sacristans assist in the preparation of the worship space for liturgies. Responsibilities include the care and preparation of the sacred vessels, lighting of candles, placements of the gifts and monitoring of ministry schedules before Masses. Contact: Tim Malone, 952.890.9465 • [email protected] Eucharistic Ministers Eucharistic Ministers are commissioned members of the laity who distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at liturgies and to our parishioners who are hospitalized or homebound. At some Masses, as many as 15 ministers are needed throughout the church. Contact: Jane Mannila, 952.736.8258 • [email protected] Lectors Lectors proclaim the Word of God in the first and second readings and also read the parish intercessions at Mass. Lectors should have a strong, clear voice and an ability to speak with ease and conviction. Contact: Jason Roberts • [email protected] Page eight

Greeters Hospitality is part of the foundation on which all of our ministries are built. That is why the role of Hospitality Minister is so important. Hospitality Ministers greet and welcome people as they enter church before Mass and they also help parishioners and guests by providing information and assistance. Hospitality Ministers are needed before each of the weekend Masses and training is provided.  Contact: Scott Wilgenbusch • [email protected] Worship Commission The Second Vatican Council tells us that the Eucharist is the “summit and source” of the life for the Christian people. As a means of helping us as a parish to have a vibrant prayer life is our Worship Commission. The Worship Commission is composed of both the heads of various liturgical ministries, ranging for example from lector to members of our music ministries, as well as those interested in the liturgical and prayer life of the parish. The goal of the Worship Commission as stated in its mission statement is, “Create a welcoming environment that promotes active and meaningful participation in liturgical celebrations and strengthens the faith experience.” Contact: Scott Wilgenbusch • [email protected] Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children’s Liturgy of the Word is for children in kindergarten to second grade at the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass. The Celebrant invites children to follow a prayer leader to their own prayer space during the early part of Mass. This special time of prayer follows the same Liturgy of the Word as the larger assembly, but at a level children understand. The leader then invites the children to share their reflections on the Gospel. Activities are provided to help reinforce the themes from the readings. The children then rejoin the general assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Contact: Andi Little, 952.890.9434 • [email protected] Child Care for Events St. John’s Child Care is designed to care for young children of parents who attend the various services and events at our church. Volunteers are always needed. All volunteers will need to complete VIRTUS training through the Archdiocese and a background check. Contact: Colleen Roberge, 952.890.9465 • [email protected] Holy Family Prayer Group St. John’s offers this wonderful traditional prayer ministry whereby any parishioner is invited to attend the Holy Family Prayer Group on Tuesdays from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Chapel to pray the Rosary. This group of parishioners has been meeting for more than 25 years and has a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They also pray for the needs of the parish and prayer requests. This special ministry is a truly spiritual and uplifting example of the power of people and the power of prayer. Contact: Tim Malone, 952.890.9465 • [email protected]

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Perpetual Adoration is a Eucharistic devotion whereby parishioners of St. John’s unite in taking an hour of adoration before the Most Blessed Sacrament both during the day and throughout the night, seven days a week. Pope Benedict says, “I heartily recommend to the church’s pastors and to the people of God the practice of Eucharistic Adoration…The personal relationship which the adorer establishes with Jesus, present in the Eucharist, constantly points beyond itself to the whole communion of the church and nourishes a fuller sense of membership in the Body of Christ.” This hour can be spent any way you want. You may bring your own prayer books, read the Bible, pray the Rosary, or just sit, relax and enjoy the sweet peace that comes from simply being in the Presence of God. Go to www.stjohns-savage.org to sign-up. Contact: Candace Kropp, 952.440.6072 • [email protected] Sewing Baptism Gowns In the Sacrament of Baptism, we believe that sin is washed away and we become adopted children of God. A sign of our new life in Christ is the white baptismal gown. These gowns are sewn by parishioners and are given as a lasting gift at the time of Baptism. Contact: Tim Malone, 952.890.9465 • [email protected] Prayer Chain The Prayer Chain is an opportunity to unite the parish community in prayer during times of need. Parishioners with prayer requests relating to death, illness or other crisis are encouraged to call the Parish Office. The requests are then given to the Holy Family Prayer Group for prayer. Elementary Youth Faith Formation Elementary Youth Ministry (EYM) programs are offered throughout the year for children in grades 3, 4 and 5. Loss of Spouse The Loss of Spouse group is an informal gathering for anyone who has lost a spouse at any time. We not only welcome parishioners, but also non-parishioners, friends, neighbors and relatives. This group generally meets for a meal on a monthly basis. At times the church has provided the meals or we have had a parish family come forward to provide meals. There have been pot-lucks, and we have gone Dutch-treat to restaurants. Depending on the time of the year, we will have a lunch or dinner during the week or a Saturday at noon. We do not consider this to be a support group, but rather a social group for those who have the common experience of having lost a spouse. Loss of Spouse events appear in the parish bulletin. This is done with a Ministry Fair that invites people to learn more about our many ministries, encourages participation in the ministries as a volunteer, and also with special food and festivities provide the opportunity to thank those who offer to the parish their gifts as they support our gospel centered mission. We also recognize that there are those in our local area who struggle and live in poverty. As a parish, we seek to reach out to those individuals and families in the love and spirit of Jesus Christ. During the calendar year, we have specific efforts of outreach. The Apple Giving Tree is a means to help children and families as they prepare for a new school year. The Christmas Giving Tree helps families prepare to celebrate the season of Christ’s birth. In August and November, a tree is placed in the atrium with tags that parishioners are invited to take. On each tag lists an item to purchase and return to the tree by a specified date. All items are then gathered and taken to local organizations that determine need and distribute items to the needy of our area. Contact: Jim Rylander, 952.890.9465 • [email protected]

St. John the Baptist Catholic School is a wonderful school, fully accredited, that partners with parents to provide a quality Catholic education to children from the early days in our preschool program all the way through 8th grade. When the students graduate from St. John’s in 8th grade, they are academically prepared to succeed in high school and they have grown as young Christian men and women from a curriculum that offers each child a fabulous holistic education. Our dedicated teachers and staff members have taught them everything from the letters of the alphabet to the Pythagorean theory. The students have experienced service opportunities, studied the tenets of the Catholic faith, developed manners and social skills, acquired the ability to work together in groups toward a common goal and learned the academic skills necessary for them to be accepted into quality high schools with high educational standards and outstanding college preparatory programs! The reasons St. John the Baptist Catholic School is so successful beginning with our preschool progr am to our incredible academic journey from Kindergarten through 8th grade are strikingly clear: (1) the greater faith community generously helps support the school; (2) the teachers are dedicated and committed to their “ministry” of teaching children; (3) our parents sacrifice and volunteer at a level far above national averages; (4) our pastor, Father Mike Tix, is totally committed to the school and highly visible throughout the day from celebrating Masses, teaching religion classes, cheering at games, and attending concerts, plays and science fairs throughout any given typical week. St. John’s School is fully accredited by the State of Minnesota and MNSAA, the Minnesota Non-Public School Accrediting Association. Our teachers are all licensed by the State of Minnesota and dedicated to helping you and your children obtain a fabulous quality Catholic education. It truly is a great place to guide our children and educate them to become the best they can be! academic EXCELLENCE - the key to success • 75% of our middle school students are on the Honor Roll • 80% of graduates take honor level or Advanced Placement classes in high school • On the SAT 10 standardized tests given to all St. John’s 8th graders (Archdiocesan requirement) St. John’s students consistently perform at levels that are above grade level and national averages.

FINANCIALLY SUPPORTING ST. JOHN’S

All of us are called by Baptism to the family of God and the Body of Christ. The work of the church is the responsibility of each member. We support the work and mission of the church through the sharing of our gifts and financial resources. This Parish Resource Guide provides many opportunities for you to share your gifts. Equally important is the sharing of financial resources through our Sunday collection. The Sunday collection is our primary source of income that helps to support all that we do to serve our mission. Each registered household regularly receives Sunday collection envelopes by mail. You may also elect with a growing number of parishioners to participate in our Simple Giving Electronic donation program. Setting up Simple Giving may be done through our parish website or at the Parish Office and gives users the opportunity to have their weekly contributions automatically withdrawn from an account at a time of their choosing. We do understand that many people who use Simple Giving feel guilty or awkward about not putting something in the collection basket as it passes. We do have a solution. At each of the three main entrances to the church, near where the bulletins are stacked, is a box with green laminated cards for Simple Giving users. As the basket passes, you are invited to place the green card in the basket. Not only will this provide a good example, but it may be an invitation to others to consider this easy and automatic way of electronically contributing to the church. For more information about our Simple Giving Program or other contribution opportunities go to our website at www.stjohns-savage.org. Contact: Fred Fox, 952.890.9465 • [email protected]
