Meet Your Camp Staff Beth McCabe a Rye native, has been working for Rye Recreation Day Camp since 1997. Beth started as a Jr. Counselor and over the years has held many positions including Assistant Camp Director for Day Camp and Teen Camp Director. Beth has been the director of Kiddy Camp for the past five summers. During the school year, Beth is a first grade teacher in Bedford. She received her undergraduate degree from Manhattanville and her MS in Education from the College of New Rochelle. She and her husband have a 1 ½ year old son named R.J. Beth loves Kiddy Camp and can’t wait for another fun-filled summer!

Kiddy Camp

Dennis Hurlie started his long tenure with Rye Recreation back in 1989 as the Camp Sports Director. Crazy as it sounds, he rode his bike to work that summer from White Plains. During the years 1989 – 1994, he worked at Rye Recreation doing a variety of programs including special events and even worked with the Recreation maintenance crew & umpired softball for the Department. From 1992 – 1994 Dennis was the Day Camp Director then took a 7 year hiatus to become a recreation professional for the town of Mt. Pleasant before changing his career to become a PE teacher. Dennis returned as Camp Director in 2001. During the school year, he teaches PE at the French American Elementary School in Larchmont. This enables him to have summers off and the ability to coach basketball, volleyball and lacrosse at the high school level. Dennis has a BS in Education from SUNY Plattsburgh.

Lower Camp

Chris Taylor has lived most of his life in Rye.

Chris’ day camp experience began in 1974 when he was camper in “45B” at Rye Recreation Day Camp. He went on to become a CIT at Rye Recreation. He has been a day camp counselor for the Rye YMCA, Purchase Day Camp, and Assistant Director at Shenorock Shore Club’s Day Camp. This is his fifth year with us as camp director at Rye Recreation. Chris’ background is in the human service field. He spent many years working for YAI National Institute for People with Disabilities in Tarrytown. He also worked as a Special Olympics coach with North East Special Recreation in Valhalla. He currently teaches fourth grade at Resurrection Grammar School. He received his B.A. from Dominican College. He is now attending Fordham University Graduate School of Education where he is pursuing an M.S. in Education.

Upper Camp

Lauren Adessa was raised in Mamaroneck, New York and was a three sport athlete at Mamaroneck High School. This will be her second year as Director of Camp 78. Lauren has worked as a teacher; counselor, sports instructor, and supervisor at day camps throughout our area; and also as a coach at a local sports camp. Lauren currently works at Hackley School in Tarrytown where she coaches middle school girls’ soccer, varsity indoor track and junior varsity girls’ lacrosse. She graduated from Mamaroneck High School and received her BS in Physical Education from Manhattan College & MS in Health from Lehman College. Lauren is all about having fun and making people laugh!

Camp 78

Kiddy Camp A Summer Of Fun In The Sun Registration: Monday, February 13th at 6:30 p.m. Camper application can be downloaded at: www.ryeny.gov/recreation.cfm Kiddy Camp is specifically for children ages 3-5 (but not entering kindergarten). It is a 6-week, half day, classroom based program. Every day, the children will participate in free play, story time, songs, outdoor play, art, sports and much more! Special events and entertainment are held weekly to enhance the program. b Parents supply a snack & a drink daily Proposed Camp Site: Milton School Proposed Camp Time: 9:00 - 12:00 p.m. Kiddy Camp has a limited enrollment. Ninety (90) spaces are allotted for this program. Once that limit has been reached, names will be placed on a waiting list. Children must be 3 years old by April 30, 2012 and be toilet trained to be eligible (no pull-ups). Lower Camp Camp No Left Turn Registration: Monday, March 5th at 6:30 p.m. Camper application can be downloaded at: www.ryeny.gov/recreation.cfm Lower Camp offers an active, supervised camp program for children enrolled in grades K-2 as of September 2012. Camp groups are co-ed by grade. Sports, group games, arts & crafts, scavenger hunts, field trips and special theme days are just part of the fun planned for these campers. LOWER CAMP SPECIALS: b SWIM LESSONS: Children enrolled in this program will be taken to Rye Golf Club three times a week for a 30-40 minute swim period. There is limited enrollment in the swim lesson program; limits are due to time restrictions and safety regulations as specific staff to camper ratios are mandated by the Department of Health. Only 6-week campers are eligible to participate. Swim days are planned on Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays between 9:00 – 12:00 p.m. Fee: $115

b COMPUTERS WITH CYBER DISCOVERIES 2: These computer classes prepare children with the essential skills to succeed in the busy, digital world around them. Students go on virtual adventures all over the world of Imagine Tomorrow. As computer detectives, children solve missions each week using their own wireless laptop. Fee: $125 Grade K Mondays, July 9, 16, 23, 30 & Aug 6 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Grades 1-2 Mondays, July 9, 16, 23, 30 & Aug 6 9:15 - 10:15 a.m. b MAD SCIENCE: Grade K: Mad Science of Westchester will come to camp and make a scientist out of your child in no time. Children will be taken out of regularly scheduled classes to participate in this special program. Fee: $40 Jr. Rocketry (Grades 1 & 2): Have a “blast” as you discover the dynamics of rocket flight. Discuss Isaac Newton and his awesome Laws of Motion. Learn how and why rockets fly as you build your very own model rockets that you will take home at the end of the session. Fee: $40 Dino Casts (Grade 1 only): Enter the Jurassic age as you create your own velociraptor skeleton replicas. Campers will cast and mount these 24” long models as you learn about these ancient beasts. Fee: $40 Magical Illusions (Grade 2 only): Optical Illusions will abound as we explore the science of sight and misdirection. Work together with us to create your own special optical devices that change the way you see the world and fool your friends! Fee: $40 Mad Science Gr. Campers are grouped by sex and grade. This camp program gives campers the opportunity to participate in a variety of trips and programs including sports, games, arts & crafts, indoor rec, a variety of special events and themed days. UPPER CAMP SPECIALS:

b GROUP SWIM: Children enrolled in this program will be taken to Rye Golf Club two times each week for a 30-40 minute swim period. There is limited enrollment in the swim program; all campers must be 6-week campers to participate. The limits are due to time restrictions and safety regulations as specific staff to camper ratios are mandated by the Department of Health. Children enrolled should come to camp dressed in bathing suits on swim days. Swim days are planned on Monday and Thursday between 9:00 – 11:45 a.m. Fee: $80 b MAD SCIENCE (Time for all classes ~ 1:15 - 3:15 p.m.): Basic Robotics-Solar Frogbot: Calling all junior engineers! Using its hind legs and rubber feet, our Frogbot jiggles its eyes as a dog would wag its tail acknowledging its love and appreciation to its owner. The tailless, leaping mini solar kit is activated by the power of the sun’s rays; no batteries required. July 9, 11 & 12; Fee: $85 Advanced Robotics-Junglebot: Learn about and play with robots while we discuss what makes robots different from humans. Then build this battery-controlled jungle robot which teaches the basic principles of robotic sensing and locomotion. With two modes of transportation (Orangutan mode or Gorilla mode) this robot is sure to be an awesome adventure. July 30, Aug 1 & 2; Fee: $85

b BRICK KIDS - FUN WITH LEGOS: Brick Kids will be bring LEGO tm fun to Upper Camp! Campers in these one day specials will design & create large group projects, as well as use their imagination to create individual masterpieces. Go Big or Go Home Registration: Monday, February 13th at 6:30 p.m. Camper application can be downloaded at: www.ryeny.gov/recreation.cfm Are you going into 7th or 8th grade and looking for an adventure this summer? Then come out and join Camp 78! Camp 78 combines the best of sports, activities & cool trips. Have fun with your old friends and make some new ones while participating in daily games & activities, as well as enjoying incredible trips! Proposed Camp Site: Rye Recreation Proposed Camp Time: varies, please see tentative schedule Camp 78 is for Rye Residents only! Camp Fee: Each week ..............................................$210 (please note that fees increase $30 a week as of June 1) Camp 78 Refund Policy: Because of the unique nature of the camp, and the need to purchase tickets in advance, refunds will be granted until June 6, 2012 (minus a $25 processing fee per week). After June 6, 2012, refunds will only be granted for medical reasons. Changing Weeks: Weeks of attendance can be switched at any time if space is available. For example, if you originally registered for weeks 3 & 6, but would like to switch to weeks 2 & 4, you are welcome to do so, space permitted. If you make the request after the refund deadline, and space is not available in the week(s) requested, you will remain registered for the originally scheduled week(s) --- no refunds will be granted after the deadline. General Camp Information Planning for the summer camp season is well underway! We have a diverse camp program that values individuality, promotes selfesteem, and exposes your child(ren) to a variety of skills, games and activities. Rye Recreation, in cooperation with the Rye City School District, offers camp programs in the Rye City Schools. All camps are licensed by the Department of Health and adhere to all regulations set by the County and State Health Departments. Registration: (Dates listed throughout the publication) • Registration must be done by the parent/guardian of the child. • Submit a completed registration form for each child including your child’s immunizations at the time of registration. Additionally, a birth certificate is required for Kiddy Camp only. • Bring proof of residency. • Space is limited. All fees increase $180 if registering after May 31 (or $30/week if not registering for 6-week program). Payment: • Rye Recreation accepts checks or credit cards (MC, Visa, Discover or AMEX). • Payments may be split in two ($20 fee) with half of the payment processed the week of registration and the balance to be processed on June 1. • Children will not be permitted to start camp with any unpaid balances. Refunds/Credits: Refund requests received in writing prior to the start of the camp season will be processed less $25 per week. No refunds will be given once camp begins, except for medical reasons. Please see Camp 78 page for specific information pertaining to Camp 78 only! Scholarship Assistance: Rye Recreation will partially assist qualified residents with the cost of the camp program. Please request an application for scholarship and return it completed with the appropriate documents at the time of registration. A $100 per child deposit is required. Medical Information: As required by the Department of Health, your child’s immunization record is mandatory at the time of registration. Any child required to take medication at camp must complete a special medical form which requires a doctor’s signature. Please request a form at the time of registration.
